Who is Uninformed and Uneducated About China and its Virus?

Just as Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong tried to curb panic buying induced by what he claimed to be “rumours” through legislation, this could not help but remind the world of the PRC's recent expulsion of three Wall Street Journal reporters and the plummet of stock markets worldwide--the much dreaded consequences of the Wuhan pneumonia are proven real.

In this regard, the statement released by WHO that the coronavirus was not a “world health emergency” is refuted by not only the unprepared outbreak in South Korea, but also WHO's belated announcement of COVID-19 as a global epidemic.

Yet, WHO's praise of China’s response to the coronavirus remains a 'novel' perspective to the international community. After all, were the people in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and even Italy, whose behaviours have displayed distrust of the WHO and the Chinese authorities, the uninformed and uneducated ones? Or have Singapore's prime minister and the Wall Street prodigies missed out something important in the bigger picture? Or shall we turn around and ask: What role does China play in backing, sourcing and disseminating WHO-related information in the post-Margaret-Chan* era?

* Preceding Tedros Adhanom, Margaret Chan, a Hong Kong physician, was Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) delegating the People's Republic of China for 2006–2017.

Italy is currently the country with the third highest number of Coronavirus cases after China and South Korea, the number of confirmed cases there is also the highest in Europe.

Lombardy, a severely affected area, has seen panic buys of disinfectant equipment and daily supplies. And this leads to growing concern by dwellers in nearby cities about potential shortage of supplies.

Unlike Hong Kong, people in Italy are not rushing for toilet tissue but Nutella. We wish that the epidemic could be controlled in no time.

Riot Police’s wanton suppression of civilians' self-help measures: "Shut up, or bite you"

A group of Lok Fu residents were voluntarily distributing alcohol hand rub and disinfection spray in the evening of February 27. About ten minutes after they started, police arrived and searched the young people on site.

One of the residents, Miss W, said that police dashed out from two police cars and cordoned off the area while intercepting a young man holding a "Liberate Hong Kong Revolution of our Times" flag.

Onlookers pointed out that an officer accompanied by a police dog seemed irate. At one point, he yelled at the civilians, "Shut up, or [I will unleash the dog to] bite you!"

Later, more riot police arrived for reinforcement and intercepted a reporter who was broadcasting a live interview. They snatched away the reporter's phone and ordered him to keep his hands down, saying “what if you hurt a police officer as you wave your hand. Shut up and don’t argue.”

China Conceals Coronavirus Cases by Destroying Samples and Test Results

According to media outlets in China, the Chinese authorities have been covering up details into Wuhan pneumonia, for instance, by stopping tests and destroying samples of new coronavirus.

On January 1, a staff member of a genetic sequencing company received an order from the Hubei province health care committee to suspend analysis of the new coronavirus; moreover, samples should be disposed of and no information should be released externally. The government officer demanded, "all new Coronavirus cases should be reported directly to the state."

On January 3, the General Office of China's National Health and Health Commission cascaded similar directives.

Chinese High Speed Rail Passengers Attempts to Walk from Hong Kong to China after Missing his Stop

Lawnaker Jeremy Tam stated that in early December a Chinese passenger, who got on from Changsha South station in China, missed their stop at Shenzhen North station and reached West Kowloon Station in Hong Kong as a consequence.

They, however, did not ask for help or enter Hong Kong via border control. Instead they walked the rail north in attempts of going back to China.

In the end, they walked 10 km to Kwai Chung, where they exited the tracks via the ventilation emergency exit. Once they found that they still had not left Hong Kong, they reported to the nearby police station.

Tam denounced the absurdity of the situation, stating that he was suspicious of the authenticity of the report due to its absurdity. Yet he received a reply from the government yesterday which prompted him to speak out against the situation. Tam excoriates Co-location arrangement.

Pro-democracy fights carry on in the form of public art

Local artist, Giraffe Leung Lok Hei, rolled out a public art event, Paper Over the Cracks.

Using yellow adhesive tape, Leung framed the markings of slogans and phrases written by protestors on street corners and added small tags to introduce each “art piece”, just like the display of any contemporary masterpiece at an art gallery

Leung made a territory-wide invitation for all HongKongers to take part and create “art pieces” with him. Leung explained, “it requires no particular skills. You need only tape, pen and paper.” He continued, “actually the society is full of anomalies , we shouldn’t let ourselves get numbed."

Leung called on the public to post their own “art pieces” online using hashtags like #粉飾太平香港 or #paperoverthecracks to
collate their artworks and share their feelings.

In a statement, convenor and district councillor #AndrewChiu said the decision was made regarding “the latest development in the situation of Hong Kong under the 'new political era'.”

Chiu said the group has now stopped running, but members will continue to serve Hong Kong people.

#CulturalRevolution-style Attack on Hong Kong Government Officials

China mouthpieces Ta Kung Pao and Wen Wei Po ran front page article on February 27, 2021 in which it questioned if the newly appointed Secretary of Food and Environmental Hygiene, Vivian Lau Lee-kwan met the requirement of “patriots governing Hong Kong”, a principle described by President Xi Jinping as a bottom line for ensuring the city’s stability.

Lau was accused of having double standards for tolerating political placards made by “black-clad rioters” while quickly removing similar “patriotic” placards from pro-China individuals. The paper also accused Lau’s husband, Chua Hoi-wai, chief executive of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, for opening its venues to anti-government protesters to take a rest in during 2019’s mass protests.

Executive councilor Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee, a former Administrative Officer, defended Lau against pro-Beijing criticism, likening it to criticisms that prevailed the Cultural Revolution in China.

She called for “Cultural Revolution-style denunciations” to be stopped, urging Beijing loyalists to direct criticisms at issues, and not people.

Hong Kong Police Force Food Deliverer to Read Out Government-banned Protest Slogan

In Hong Kong, the police reportedly "forced" a take-away food deliverer to read out protest slogans from some cards found by the police inside the civilian's wallet.

The food deliverer surnamed Chiu, working for #FoodPanda, revealed to the media that the "trap" set by the police can potentially incriminate him under the #NationalSecurityLaw.

In a video Chiu provided to Apple Daily, four police officers surrounded him, while one of them was holding his wallet. The police took out two cards printed with the slogans “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our times” and “Five demands not one less.”

The police officer then ordered Chiu to read out the slogans, to which Chiu refused fearing that it may violate the national security law for "promoting independence" according to the authorities.

Chiu told Apple Daily that the police officers' behavior was problematic and accused him of "knowingly violating the law" to incite him to read out the slogans, so that he would breach the national security law for subversion.

Pentagon calls remarks on Senkakus' sovereignty an 'error'

U.S. Defense Department spokesman John Kirby said Friday his recent remarks supporting Tokyo's claims over the sovereignty of the Japanese-controlled, China-claimed Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea were an "error" and apologized for any confusion.

"There is no change to U.S. policy regarding the sovereignty of the Senkaku Islands," the press secretary said, apparently referring to Washington's position of neutrality over who has sovereignty over the uninhabited islets.

"I do regret my error," he added.

"Let's Say We're Japanese": Chinese in #Ukraine Fear Retribution after Insulting Posts from #ChineseNetizens

As Russian armed forces invaded Ukraine, numerous Chinese netizens made posts in support of Russia. Some posts even sarcastically said, "beautiful ladies of Ukraine, come to China".

These posts have drawn the ire of the Ukrainian public, according to a video by a Chinese student who said he was living in Ukraine. "They're a bit emotional about this," he said. Chinese living in Kyiv have begun telling others that they're Japanese; "We don't even dare to call ourselves Chinese anymore."

He called on China's "keyboard warriors" to show restraint, and stop offending the Ukrainians.

The student quoted posts made by Chinese netizens, such as: "Good for Ukraine to have a war; the more deaths the better. This way I could have an Ukrainian mistress." Local media have reported about these posts, complete with translations; "basically, all Ukrainians know."

In shelters, locals would ask Chinese students like himself about the posts, and whether Chinese people are really like this. As a result, many of them don't dare to take shelter in the metro stations with other Ukrainians.

"Give us a little chance to survive," he implored his audience in China. He said that when Ukrainians in Kyiv asked Chinese citizens where they are from, "We say we're Japanese. We don't even dare to call ourselves Chinese anymore, all thanks to you. Do you need a wife that badly? You've lost your humanity. So many of them are dying in the war; how dare you say "good for them" because you might get an Ukrainian wife."

With a sigh, he concluded: "If Chinese people here get beaten or shot to death, it will be thanks to you keyboard warriors."

Since Friday, Feb 25, 2022, China's social media giants #Weibo, #WeChat, and #TikTok have begun censoring accounts that made such offensive remarks. Weibo announced that they processed 542 such posts, and deducted social credit scores of 74 accounts. Tiktok said that it had processed 6,400 videos that have violated rules, and terminated 1,620 live streams.
