Police Mock Injured District Councilor: "He doesn't have a ear, he can't hear"

1951 | Cityplaza, Tai Koo Shing
Pro-democracy district councilor Andrew Chiu was knived by a man in Cityplaza last year. One of his ears was severely injured.

While Chiu attempted to help citizens leave the shopping mall this evening, some police said next to him, "He [Chiu] doesn't have a ear, he can't hear" along with other cruel remarks.

Chiu said that police are instigating so they can use violence to disperse.

1957 |
Andrew Chiu repeatedly expressed that Tai Mou Avenue is part of private property, but the police replied, "So what?" and claimed that district councilors should only help to disperse citizens. The police also said talking to "someone with ulterior motives" is a waste of time.

"Crybully" - Police accused councillors of assault after shoving him

2027 | #Taikoo

As Councillor Andrew Chiu was being helped to leave the frontline area, a riot police officer inexplicably rushed towards him, forcing him away from his assistant on whom he had been leaning on. The officer then began accusing Chiu for assaulting an officer, with his glasses fogged over and his voice apparently breaking from rage.

As Chiu began to protest that the officer had in fact shoved his assistant first, the officer immediately aimed his pepper spray at Chiu's face to silence him.

"He could only blink his eyes, but cannot speak" - Councilor Chiu tearfully recounts police slamming his assistant headfirst into the ground

Councilor Andrew Chiu spoke to the press after the events at Taikoo Shing earlier.

As police arrived in Chiu spoke to the district commander, who said they came to investigate a report of an anti-gathering violation. At that time, Chiu already made a solemn request to the commander to not let the frontline officers to get out of control or aggravate the residents.

As the police aggressively pushed into the mall and residential area, Chiu noted that many reporters and civilians had no time to leave, many were arrested, though ultimately all have only been searched and released.

At riot police arrived at Taikoo Phase 4, they began to try to agitate Chiu's assistant with aggressive language, looking for an excuse to arrest him. Chiu immediately held onto his assistant and tried to leave the scene, he was wrestled away by multiple officers and, as Chiu watched, slammed him headfirst into the ground.

The attending first-aiders reported that he could only blink his eyes, but could not speak. In tears, Chiu apologized profusely to his assistant's parents that he was unable to hold onto him and keep him safe from the police.

Chiu noted the area of police investigation should have been in Cityplaza, and not the adjacent Taikoo Shing residential estate, where the altercation took place. The officers he spoke to was also unable to tell him under which law they conducted this clearance operation. He strongly condemned the police presence there, and demanded the police to leave Taikoo Shing as soon as possible.

#PowerforDemocracy Disbanded in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, Power for Democracy announced its immediate disbandment on Feb 27, 2021.

Set up in 2002, the group has coordinated the district council elections in 2019 and the pro-democracy camp’s #LegCo primaries in 2020.

In Jan 2021, the Hong Kong authorities arrested over 50 poltical figures for participating in the primaries and "vioating the #NationalSecurityLaw".

In a statement, convenor and district councillor #AndrewChiu said the decision was made regarding “the latest development in the situation of Hong Kong under the 'new political era'.”

Chiu said the group has now stopped running, but members will continue to serve Hong Kong people.
