Victim of Police Brutality Speaks Up Before CUHK Vice-Chancellor: "Do you know I am not the only one who has been sexually assaulted by the police?"

Part 1

Miss S (sometimes "Student S"), a victim of police brutality, who had previously recounted her traumatic experience, revealed her identity in public on October 10, in the hope of convincing the Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Rocky Tuan.

The following is her speech and questions to the Vice-Chancellor:

"Do you know what your children, what your arrested students want?

Do you know what they need?

Do you know that when we were arrested our phones were taken away and turned off by the police?

They berated us with coarse language. The police herded us up like cattles.

When we were told to get into the dark rooms we had to obey.

When we were told to take off our clothes we had to obey.

Do you know that some of us still have to see the doctor regularly after being beaten with batons by the Special Tactics Squad?

Do you know the frisk rooms in San Uk Ling (Holding Centre) were totally pitch black?

Do you know that I am not the only person who has been sexually assaulted by the police?

Other arrestees, regardless of their gender, were tortured and assaulted sexually and physically in different ways, by more than one police.

Do you know how MTR employees turned a blind eye to us when the police were beating us?

Do you know how we were treated with no dignity and no humanity, but just forced to obey the police during the detention period?

The following is in fact not a question, but a request.

Mr. President, I understand your concern to balance different views between all parties in the university.

Mr. President, I am willing to find my courage to take off my mask now. (The girl took off her mask and revealed her face)

Would you be willing to find your courage to stand alongside and to walk with us the students, to condemn the Police for their brutalities towards arrestees, including CUHK students?"

Head of Radiology at Princess Margaret Hospital Resigns and Refuses to Provide List of Employees on Strike

The Hospital Authority Employees Alliance (#HKEA) initiated a 5-day strike in early February and demanded a “complete shutdown of the border” to stop the spread of the coronavirus to Hong Kong from China.

On 25 Feb, the Hospital Authority wrote to all employees who took leave demanding an explanation for their absence which caused dissatisfaction among the medical staff.

According to the source, the Head of Radiology Department of the Princess Margaret Hospital refused to provide a list of the staff who participated in the strike and might have tendered his resignation from his position as the head of the department.

The Hospital Authority states that they will not comment any human resources arrangements on individual employees. According to the source, the hospital is trying to convince him to stay as Head of Radiology. The Hospital Authority spokesperson also said that staff will not be dismissed due to their participation in the strike.

Public Channel RTHK criticized by the Police, but received more than 34,000 compliments from the population

//Director of Broadcasting Leung Ka-wing on Thursday addressed an ongoing row between RTHK and the police force, saying various government departments should respect each other and understand that they have different roles to play.

Leung's letter to all members of staff at the public broadcaster follows complaints made by Police Commissioner Chris Tang that RTHK is "misleading the public" with some of its output, with the police chief going as far as to warn that the station risks undermining law and order.

At the heart of the controversy is the broadcaster's satirical TV show Headliner and in particular two episodes aired last month that mocked the police force.

...Leung notes in his letter that as well as the 6,500 complaints RTHK received about Headliner between February 1 and March 8, it also received more than 34,000 compliments about the programme, which is one of the station's most popular TV shows and has aired since 1989.

Thanking staff for their "unswerving dedication" when confronted with the "unprecedented challenges" thrown up by Hong Kong's social turmoil, he said RTHK's programmes in various genres comply "on the whole" with the public purposes and missions stipulated in its charter.

"RTHK has come to be a prominent platform for the public to attain and express opinions, fully exemplifying Hong Kong's diversity, inclusiveness and acceptance," Leung wrote.//

5 Heads of i-Cable News and Entire China News Team Resign En Masse Against Laying Off of Journalists

On Dec 1, 2020, i-Cable News laid off 40 employees with immediate effect, angering staff at the TV news station.

According to the source, the head of i-Cable China News Szeto Yuen was the first to protest by resigning, followed by the rest of the journalists on the team. In total, one journalist was fired, and the other ten on the team, including Szeto, quit in protest. Some members from other teams also resigned to protest against the company's decision.

A senior journalist told Stand News that they felt it was better to take action together and alert the public that i-Cable News had deteriorated, instead being slowly and quietly weakened. He added that it was not worth staying anymore, since the management has intervened in the reporting again and again.

After recent salary cuts, a few junior journalists were only earning around 13,000 HKD a month. Operations at i-Cable News has nearly ground to a halt on Dec 1, 2020.

An upper-mid-level manager said that the top management had not consulted any department heads about this round of firing. The video editors and graphic designers who were fired were widely praised for their abilities by their colleagues. Many of the fired staff played important roles in middle and senior management.

i-Cable China News had investigated corrupt practices in China many times, and followed up the situation of activists; the team was long regarded to be in high reputation.

They were among the few public broadcasters in Hong Kong with a dedicated team for China news; its 11 members, including the team leader, are responsible for the daily China news reporting and the night-time “China Report”. They also have journalists regularly stationed in Beijing and Guangzhou.

Their most visible reporting in recent years were the 2012 interview of pro-democracy activist Li Wangyang, who served the longest sentence among those from the 1989 Tiananmen protests.

After broadcasting the interview, Li died in Daxiang Hospital, where he was found dead and leaning against the window, with a rope wrapped around his neck, though his legs were touching the ground. The Chinese authorities initially reported that he committed suicide, but they later changed the conclusion to “accidental death”. This incident caused strong repercussions in Hong Kong, with over ten thousand Hongkongers marching in protest, believing that Li "had been suicided".

In 2017, journalist Lam Kin-Shing covered the memorial at sea for Liu Xiaobo by a group of dissenters, the event was broadcast on Facebook live. Afterwards, Liu’s friends were arrested by China police, and the driver hired by i-Cable China News was detained for three days. Lam was transferred back to Hong Kong and barred from reporting in China again; he resigned soon after.

At the early stage of the Wuhan Pneumonia outbreak last year, China News team sent journalists to Wuhan for investigation. They were among the very few Hong Kong media who sent journalists to Wuhan for on-site reporting.

Moreover, the iCable China News team's reporting had won many awards, including Human Right Press Award and awards in the School of Journalism and Communication in CUHK. Their award-winning programs included “Damage of Nuclear weapons tests”, “The land acquisitions incident of Wukan village”, “ Li Wangyang”, “Even China police are protesting”, “Decoding the future of 30 years later”, “Tiananmen massacre 30th year anniversary”, “Poison milk powder: 10 years later”.

The surprise screening of Kiwi Chow's documentary "Revolution Of Our Times" at the 2021 #CannesFilmFestival, one of the three major film festivals worldwide, had attracted widespread attention.

The film documents Hong Kong's 2019 Anti-ELAB movement, and its trailer was posted online on July 18, 2021. Many viewers commented that they could not hold back their tears, and thanked the director for recording history.

#KiwiChow had previously directed the short "Ten Years: Self-Immolator" and feature film "Beyond the Dream".

In an interview with Stand News, he responded to the warm reception from netizens: "Some things go both ways. Some people thanked me; I also want to thank everyone."

Many had expressed concern for Chow's personal safety. He had mentioned in previous interviews that he had to "prepare to face potential consequences." He did not want to dwell on what the "consequences" may be, lest he be dominated by fear.

Chow is currently in Hong Kong, and has no plans to leave. "I don't need to, nor want to, allow the fear of what hasn't happened - and only exists in my imagination - to control my decisions."
