Reporter: Why are you coming to vote at this hour?

Voter: It is a last-minute decision as I initially thought I could not make it. I decided to come to vote to make my voice heard. People of my age have been so used to keeping quiet and swallowing our discontentment. But, this time, I want to let it out.

Reporter: The government issued two statements within 24 hours to announce their disapproval of this referendum. What’s your view on the government’s action?

Voter: It is my right to cast a vote. The Government cannot take this right from me.

Reporter: Details of the National Security Law have been announced earlier today. Did you feel being pressured and hesitated to come out and vote?

Voter: Yes, I do feel the pressure. But I hope more citizens can come out to show our disapproval and solidarity.

Reporter: Then, is the announcement on details of National Security Law a trigger for you to come and vote?

Voter: Not really. I have not read about the details announced today. To me, the law is problematic so it stays problematic be it with or without details.

Amidst the intimidation from white terror, coupled with hard-handed police monitoring, an overall turnout of 52.7% was nonetheless achieved among 30 unions in the first referendum held on Saturday (June 20). The polling results were announced before midnight.

While a vast majority of 98% and 95.4% voted against the National Security Law and supporting their union to initiate a general strike respectively, only 20% of the unions (6) reached a decision to organise a general strike.

Students Organize Joint-School 'Sing With You' Event

On June 19, students from multiple schools held a “Sing with you” event at APM Kwun Tong.

Around 100 citizens gathered at the mall to sing “Glory to Hong Kong”, and chanted slogans like “Hong Kong Independence”, “Never give up”, “Release the protesters and give us freedom”.

Some students encouraged the public to join the referendum for the strike on 20 Jun. Before the activity started, around 30 riot police and 7 police cars stood by nearby, and some officers stopped and searched citizens at APM exits.

Hospital Authorities Launch Political Revenge on Staff On Strike, Hong Kong Medical Doctors Fear to Become the Next Li Wenliang

A number of labor unions including the Hospital Authorities Employment Association (HAEA) have plans to go on strike in protest of the national security law in Hong Kong.

Fan Hung-Ling, chairman of the Hospital Authorities (HA) called the plan to strike "political", violating the neutrality of the HA, and that would not succeed.

The Hospital Authorities even hired a team of lawyers to study the legal issues related to the strike back in February.

Fan said that the human resource department would be responsible for following up on the previous strike, but he did not disclose the costs associated with hiring the lawyers.

According to Law Cheuk-Yiu, the vice-chairman of HAEA, many are concerned that after the implementation of the national security law, medical personnel will not be able to speak freely. The situation might get worse like what happened to the late Dr. Li Wen Liang in Wuhan China. Dr. Li was a whistleblower warning of the Covid-19 outbreak in China. He was accused by the Communist government for disseminating fake news and eventually died of the disease.

Similarly, Hong Kong microbiologist and SARS expert Professor Yuen Kwok-yung has been heavily criticized in China, after he criticized China’s handling of the pandemic in a paper. With the implementation of the national security law, Law said, no one can guarantee if medical staff can tell the truth in the future.

Law also criticized Fan, the chairman of the HA, for having a double standard when Fan claimed that medical staff should not talk about politics nor have a political stance. Law pointed out that how Fan hastily characterized potential strikes as "political strikes" is precisely being political and suppressive. Law reiterated that if medical staff are afraid to tell the truth because of the national security law in the future, it will ultimately affect the treatment of the patients.

Strike in bid to Prevent Beijing from Eradicating Their Mother Tongue in Schools

On the first day of the new school term on 1 September 2020, approximately 300,000 Mongolian students held a strike against the action by the Chinese government to replace the Mongolian language with Mandarin as the language of instruction in the schools of Inner Mongolia.

The Chinese police have offered 1000 RMB as a reward to people who make reports against those who went on the strike.

According to the news, the parents of at least two Mongolian students have protested against the authorities for forcing their children to return to school. They were a teacher and her husband. More Mongolians joined the movement in defending their mother tongue.

Employees of Inner Mongolia Radio and Television (IMRTS) have jointly petitioned and threatened to resign collectively if anyone of them were to be laid off with their participation in the strike being the reason.

It has already been three days since the start of the strike, and the government has not budged. However, the strikes and demonstrations have been forecasted to continue.

Hospital Authority Retaliates on Medical Workers Indiscriminately

Hong Kong Hospital Authority Employees' Association (#HAEA) initiated a 5-day strike in early 2020, calling on the Hong Kong Government to close all the borders to stop the spread of the Coronavirus from China to Hong Kong. Thousands of medical workers had joined the strike.

Since then, the Hospital Authority (#HA) had threatened its employees multiple times with regard to the strike. In February 2020, the authorities issued letters to medical workers and demanded an explanation on their "absence" during the days of the strike.

In the Radiology Department of Princess Margaret Hospital, several medical workers had joined the strike. The management demanded the department head Dr Ma Ka-fai to hand in a name list of the relevant employees. Dr Ma refused.

According to Stand News, the Human Resources Department recently sent an email to all doctors in the Radiology Department, claiming they had all joined the strike. Vice chair of the union HAEA Law Cheuk-yiu condemned the HR Department for pressuring the Radiology Department.
