Intel deletes mention of Xinjiang in letter after China backlash

US chipmaker Intel has deleted references to Xinjiang from an annual letter to suppliers after the company faced a backlash in China for asking suppliers to avoid the sanctions-hit region.

Last month, Intel was slammed on Chinese social media for a letter to suppliers published on its website. The 23 December letter said Intel had been “required to ensure that its supply chain does not use any labour or source goods or services from the Xinjiang region” following restrictions imposed by “multiple governments”.

Pompeo Awarded Medal in Visit to Taiwan, Beijing Cries “Shameless and Futile”

Former #US state secretary #MikePompeo was received by President #TsaiIngwen at her office on 3 March during his visit to #Taiwan.

In her meeting with the visitors, who came wearing a mask emblazoned with US and Taiwan flags, and Chinese words ‘firm as a rock’, Tsai thanked Pompeo on behalf of the Taiwan people for his contribution to multiple breakthroughs in #TaiwanUSRelations and supported Taiwan’s participation in the international community during his tenure as the US secretary of state. She also awarded him the Order of the Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon, Taiwan's top honours, for his efforts to elevate Taiwan-US relations, which includes lifting US restrictions on official interactions with Taiwan, regularising arms sales to Taiwan, and raising the level of mutual visits by senior officials between Taiwan and the US.

In #Beijing, spokesperson for the foreign ministry #WangWenbin called Pompeo’s visit “shameless” and “futile”.

Huawei is sanctioned by the US with a fall in profit, believing lacking a key factor.

#Mengwenzhou, the deputy chairwoman and CFO of #Huawei, once again showed up at the group performance meeting after returning to #China.

Under the #US sanction on Huawei and the shortage of chips, Huawei's income in the previous year was reduced by almost 30%, to around 637 billion dollars (in RMB, same below). It is the first fall in the revenue since the record was publicised.

Last year's net profit raised by 75.9%, to 113.7 billion dollars, in which, the sale of a smartphone department to a government-led consortium took account of around 57.4 billion dollars. With a subsidy of 2.57 billion dollars from the government, a total of 60.8 billion dollars of other income was recorded, increasing 87 times from the previous year, being the reason for net profit.

With the deduction of the other income, the net profit was slightly higher than 52.9 billion dollars, reduced by almost 20% year-to-year.

According to the data from a market research organisation, Omdia, Huawei shipped 35 million smartphones only, which plunged by 81.6% from the previous year. The market share fell from 14.7% in 2020 to 2.6% in 2021.

Huawei's consumer business resulted in a hit, and the revenue was reduced by 49.6% from last year to 243.4 billion dollars.

Exclusive: U.S. calls for 'concrete action' from China on trade deal

U.S. officials called on Monday for "concrete action" from China to make good on its commitment to purchase $200 billion in additional U.S. goods and services in 2020 and 2021 under the "Phase 1" trade deal signed by former President Donald Trump.

The officials said Washington was losing patience with Beijing, which had "not shown real signs" in recent months that it would close the gap in the two-year purchase commitments that expired at the end of 2021.

#YouTube terminates campaign channel of sole Hong Kong chief executive candidate #JohnLee, citing need to comply with #US #sanctions on ex-official

//Online video sharing platform YouTube has terminated the campaign channel of Hong Kong’s sole chief executive candidate John Lee Ka-chiu, citing the need to comply with US sanctions placed on the former official.

The platform, operated by US giant #Google, made the rare move in taking down Lee’s YouTube channel early on Wednesday, clipping the Beijing-endorsed candidate’s ability to share videos of him meeting different sectors publicly.//

Chinese Spies Violate U.S. Sovereignty and Americans’ Rights

A Chinese immigrant found a note stuck in the door of his New Jersey home in September 2018: “If you are willing to go back to mainland [China] and spend 10 years in prison, your wife and children will be all right. That’s the end of this matter!” Welcome to Operation Sky Net, a campaign launched by the Chinese government in 2015 to repatriate overseas “fugitives” through any means.

Under this program, Chinese police and security personnel routinely conduct illegal operations in other countries. Their activities in the U.S. violate their victims’ constitutional rights and make a mockery of our nation’s sovereignty. The U.S. government and law-enforcement community rarely speak out about these acts, much less prosecute the perpetrators. That has to change.

Chinese Tech Giants Quietly Retreat From Doing Business With Russia

Chinese tech companies are quietly pulling back from doing business in Russia under pressure from U.S. sanctions and suppliers, despite calls by Beijing for companies to resist overseas coercion.

Several major companies are curtailing shipments in Russia, where Chinese tech firms dominate the market for many products, without making any public announcements, according to interviews with people familiar with the matter.

They include PC giant Lenovo Group Ltd. and smartphone and gadget maker Xiaomi Corp., the people said. In contrast to many Western firms, the companies have avoided making public statements about Russia’s war in Ukraine or their business there as Beijing opposes Western sanctions.

A #US Federal Communications commissioner pushes #Apple and #Google to remove #TikTok from their app stores

In a letter to the companies released on Tuesday, Jine 29, 2022, #BrendanCarr, a Republican commissioner, said he believed that “TikTok’s pattern of conduct and misrepresentations regarding the unfettered access that persons in Beijing have to sensitive U.S. user data” violated Apple’s and Google’s standards and that TikTok should be taken out of the app stores...

The Biden administration has considered other measures to keep American data away from China but has not publicly pushed TikTok to cut ties with its Chinese owner.

TikTok has maintained that it is taking steps to keep employees in China from gaining access to its data. Shortly before a recent news report revealed it was struggling to do so, it said it was routing all data from its U.S. users through servers controlled by Oracle.//

Across 19 countries, more people see the U.S. than China favorably – but more see China’s influence growing

//In 19 countries surveyed by Pew Research Center this spring, people see the United States and President #JoeBiden more favorably than China and its president, Xi Jinping. But when it comes to perceptions of each country’s relative influence in the world, much larger shares in most nations see China’s influence growing than say the same of the U.S.

The five key findings comparing international attitudes toward the two countries are:

1. The U.S. is generally seen more positively than China.

2. Views of Biden remain much more positive than views of #XiJinPing.

3. A median of 66% across 19 countries say China’s influence on the world stage is getting stronger, while just 32% say the same about the U.S.

4. In many countries, younger people tend to feel more positively about China than older people.

5. People on the right of the ideological spectrum are more likely than those on the left to view the U.S. favorably, but there are no strong ideological patterns in views of China.//
