#CUHK cuts ties with student union

The university issued an unprecedently strong statement in the evening, stating that "The Student Union Executive Committee members have made false allegations against the University and exploited the campus for their political propaganda, which ran counter to the mission of CUHK and brought the University into disrepute. "

A spokesman stressed the election platform of #Syzygia, which won the leadership election a day ago on February 24, 2021, does not represent the position of the university, reminding them that their comments on #NationalSecurity may be in violation of the law.

The university said it will also stop collecting student union fees on its behalf and require the student body to register as an independent society to assume its own legal responsibility. Members will also be suspended from their ex-officio positions in all university committees.

0020 | CUHK campus

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) does not shy away from imposing hard-hitting #oppression on the newly elected Students' Union. The University cuts tie with the student body and refuses to provide any administrative support.

The newly elected Students' Union met with the press at around mid-night on Feb 25, 2021 to reiterate their stance.

Utterly disappointed at the University’s harsh measures, one female member of the cabinet broke into tears when presenting the cabinet’s stance. In a trembling yet stern voice, she stated that the Students' Union will carry on what they believe and speak up on contentious issues.

“We know that making a statement now will not bring any material change. We still want to speak up and make known of our stance.”

To those with #conscience, thank you for glowing in the dark

People always say the university is a miniature society; and even at the university, a free and fair election is impossible in Hong Kong.

On Feb 25, 2021, the management of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) accused the newly elected students' union #Syzygia of potentially breaching the #NationalSecurityLaw and cut tie with the student body.

Around midnight, the students told the press, their supporters, and fellow Hongkongers that they would uphold their stance as much as they can. They even apologize for not being able to carry out fully what they have promised owing to the University's oppression.

To all those with conscience, thank you for glowing in the dark to brighten our nights.

Police Charges Contain Rookie English Mistakes; Magistrate Calls It International Laughing Stock

In Hong Kong, a Polytechnic University (#PolyU) student was charged with possession of firearms, strategic commodities and offensive weapons without a license for allegedly possessing a pepper bullet pistol and a saber in his apartment.

The case was being trialed at the Fanling Magistrates’ Court on February 25, 2021.

The magistrate Kenneth Chan Ping-Chau pointed out errors in the English version of the charge sheet provided by the police. He read the content out loud on the spot, as it was written “one number of Pepper Ball”, “two numbers of Pepper Ball”.

The magistrate said, “even primary school students will know that it is ‘one apple two apples’, when this case reaches the Court of Final Appeal, I don’t want this to become the laughing stock of foreign courts.”

The magistrate urged the prosecution to amend the English version of the charges written by the Hong Kong police.

Canadian MPs call for sanctions against Chinese officials behind Beijing’s crackdown in Hong Kong

An all-party parliamentary committee studying how Canada should respond Beijing’s crackdown on civil rights in Hong Kong is urging the federal government to work with allies in slapping sanctions on the Chinese officials responsible.

That’s a challenge to the Chinese Communist Party, which controls the nominations for the top political post in Hong Kong and has begun barring pro-democracy politicians from seeking office.

In reference to warnings of Chinese state interference in Canada, the report also urges Ottawa to start scrutinizing the activities of China’s diplomats here.

China’s Campaign to Crush Democracy in Hong Kong Is Working

HONG KONG—Just eight months after Beijing imposed a new national security law to quell a pro-democracy movement, this freewheeling former British colony has all but been brought to heel.
Moving with a scope and speed few here anticipated, authorities have used the law to stamp out street protests, ban activists from lobbying foreign governments, gut the city’s legislature and arrest most of the opposition.
“Everything that’s happening in Hong Kong today was unimaginable a year ago,” political satirist Sam Ng, whose show was taken off air by a government broadcaster last year, told his 250,000 YouTube followers in January.

UK tech company sues Huawei and Goodix for patent infringement

A small British technology company has accused Huawei and Goodix, China’s largest developer of smartphone fingerprint sensors, of infringing on its technology and has launched legal proceedings against both companies.

WaveTouch, a UK registered and owned company that was spun out of Technical University in Copenhagen, has filed claims against the two Chinese companies in the District Court of Düsseldorf, one of the main European patent courts.

WaveTouch alleges that a system that it designed to improve the accuracy of fingerprint readers underneath modern smartphone screens has been replicated by Goodix for a range of ultra-thin chips and used in millions of smartphones. It said Huawei has incorporated the disputed chip technology into a number of its smartphones including the P40 and the Mate 40.

UK allows young Hongkongers a pathway to British citizenship

The British government announced new amendments to the British National (Overseas) immigration route on February 25, 2022, which allows Hong Kongers who were born on or after 1997 and who have parents with BNO passports to access it independently of their parents.

The BNO scheme, designed to offer a path to citizenship for Hong Kong nationals in the wake of Beijing’s national security law being imposed, required that applicants hold a BNO passport.

While the scheme allows applicants to bring relatives, including adult children, with them to the UK, many young people who have taken part in pro-democracy protests in 2019 have had to flee alone because their parents wish to remain in Hong Kong.

Acknowledging that this was creating “unfair outcomes”, Immigration minister Kevin Foster said it was “right and important” that the government change the policy to enable individuals aged 18 or over who were born on or after 1 July 1997 and who have at least one BNO parent to apply to the route independently.

He said the government intended to lay the changes to the immigration rules in September, with the changes expected to go live in October.
