The parent company of the pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily, #NextDigital, held a board meeting on June 21, 2021 to decide the fate of the newspaper in the face of the Hong Kong government's suppression.

The board past the motion of sending a letter to the Secretary for Security, #JohnLee Ka-chiu to demand a reply on Friday, June 25, 2021--the company asked whether part of the Apple Daily’s funds can be unfrozen for salary payment.

According to sources, many Apple Daily’s employees expect Saturday, June 26, 2021 to be the last publishing day of Apple Daily. There is also sayings that the newsaper could be shut down as soon as on Wednesday.

As for the “21:30 Apple Daily News Broadcast”, it had its last screening on the evening of June 21. The headline inquired the whereabouts of Next Digital.

At the end of the programme, anchor #TseHingYi said that it is a hard way forward and wished everyone safe and sound.

Tse also sent a message to all media workers in Hong Kong, encouraging them to hang on and stand strong.

“Even though our platform is disappearing, Hong Kong journalists will hold onto their posts and defend the truth,” said Tse.

"Dear colleagues at Apple Daily who stay until the last,

Dear fellow Hongkongers,

The perseverence and truth-seeking spirit of Apple Daily has long been seeded in our hearts.

Despite the turbulences of the time that try to disperse us, we have absorbed enough nutrients to grow wherever we are.

In a hearing relating to a pro-democracy protest on December 8, 2019, citizens went to the High Court on June 8, 2021 to voice support for the defendents who were charged by the prosecution with "conspiring to assault with intent".

Among the defendants, #LaiChunPong, the owner of the pro-democracy 'yellow' store 3C, and #CheungMingYu, who was one of the 12 Hongkongers arrested and jailed in China, both have their birthdays in June.

As the hearing came to an end, their families together with some supporting citizens, shouted "Happy Birthday" and "Fight On" to them.

As they were remanded and transported by the vehicle of the Correctional Services Department, their families and supporters unfurled a banner that read "Happy Birthday" on the street.

Lai's family members told the press they wished he could come home soon. They also mentioned that Lai was moved when other detainees made him a birthday cake inside the detention center.

Detained HK Activist #OwenChow: Good Works Are Always Born in the Worst of Times

On June 22, 2021, Owen Chow, a 24-year-old pro-democracy activist, was finally granted bail after being detained for months.

Chow was among the 47 pro-democracy figures who were arrested by the police for participating in the Primary Election of the pro-democracy camp in 2020. They were charged with subverting the state under the National Security Law.

Among the 47 people detained, Chow is only the 12th person who has been granted bail; however, he was barred by the High Court from making any speeches or take part in any action that could be seen as "endangering national security". He cannot participate in any elections or contact foreign officials.

In addition, Chow has to surrender all his travel documents and not to leave Hong Kong. He has to report to the police every evening and observe an overnight curfew.

Leaving the detention center for the moment, Chow said to the journalists, "Good works are always born in the worst of times."

The HK Police has issued an notice against a march request from LSD and three other civic groups. As such, Ms. Hong and Ms. Wong started by themselves today at 2pm to march from Victoria Park, following the route from previous years. At around 5pm, they had arrived outside of Government HQ.

Ms. Hong pointed out that she had participated in the July 1st march for many years. "If they don't let us walk, then I'll walk myself. I think this is not a issue." Ms. Wong said, a note of resentment in her voice. "There's a lot I want to hold on to, so I'll do what I can ".

Out of the many times she's been to GHQ, Ms. Hong said, the most profound time was on June 12 two years ago, when she had tasted tear gas for the first time in her life here. Seeing that all these places from the past are now behind giant barriers, Ms. Hong can only sigh. Comparing today's two-person march to the million marching in the streets in the past, Ms. Wong lamented, "I would be lying to you if I don't feel down, but I'm trying to keep myself from collapsing." Ms. Hong also pointed out that Hongkongers need rest, but hoped that we understand that "resting is preparing for a longer road ahead."

Ms. Hong said that if there is an opportunity to march, her short term demands would be unfreezing Apple Daily's assets, and releasing all political prisoners. Long term demands would be for authentic, fair elections. She also had a message for Hongkongers: to "see hope in the far off future" and for officials to "not serve the authority, but Hongkongers."

Although the "under the pot" area in LegCo has now been cordoned off, the two of them went as close as possible and took photos with their stuffed animal companions, laughing bitterly, "Hopefully one day, we can all fulfill our promise to meet 'under the pot'."

Former Pro-democracy Councilor #RoyTam Denied Bail Again for Taking Part in Primary Election

Former Hong Kong pro-democracy district councilor Roy Tam Hoi-Pong, was denied bail by the High Court on Monday, 23 August, 2021.

Roy Tam was detained for nearly half a year for taking part in the 2020 legislative primary election in the pro-democracy camp, and his bail application was rejected 3 times already.

The bail application was heard by Justice Esther Toh Lye-ping, one of the judges chosen by the Chief Executive Carrie Lam to handle cases related to the National Security Law. Esther Toh rejected the bail application after the hearing.

Before he left the court, Roy Tam called out to those attending the hearing: "It doesn’t matter! Hold On!" The attendees waved back to him, replying: "Roy, hold on!"

Hong Kong Badminton Athlete Wins Bronze in #TokyoOlympics

Pro-democracy Café in Hong Kong Unveils Mural to Encourage Citizens’ Fight for Freedom

Located in Mong Kok, Hong Kong, Hop Fat Café is a popular local restaurant in support of pro-democracy values.

During the 2019 Anti-ELAB Movement, the café owner displayed a 10-feet wall painting featuring protest symbols such as the LiHKG pig, pepe, and a masked protester couple holding each other amidst the heavy smog of tear gas.

18 months later, the café was closed in August 2021 for renovation. When it re-opens in early November 2021, the newly refurbished café featured a mural depicting a group of people climbing a hill while helping each other.

The mural made reference to one of the oft-used protest slogans, 兄弟爬山 各自努力, literally meaning brothers climbing mountains together by their own efforts.

Protest icons like gas masks, yellow hamlets, yellow hearts and black umbrellas continued to be seen on the wall.

A famous line from Les Miserable was qouted and prominently highlighted: "Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise." Seemingly, Hongkongers are encouraging one another to hang on and resist during difficult times.

#Hongkongers create human chain and cheer “May Glory to Hong Kong” amidst white terror and #CCP grip

In Hong Kong, on New Year's eve (December 31, 2021), many citizens went up to the #LionRock to count down to the year 2022. Among them, some brought neon light signs that read “GLORY HK” and “FREE HK”.

While some citizens on the site were occupied taking pictures, others lighted up their handphones to form a human chain. Just like the pro-democracy “Hong Kong Way” demonstration in 2019, a line of human chain was soon created, displaying the outline of Lion Rock with the light from the mobile phones.

Together Hongkongers counted down and cheered “May glory to Hong Kong” to welcome 2022.

On the hilltop, some elderly walked by and uttered words of encouragement to the youngsters, “hang on,” “don’t give up”, while others passed on drinks to them.

Down the hill, some citizens raised laser pointers and pointed towards the hill top to echo and show their support.

[Editors' notes: Inspired by the Baltic human chain in 1989, the “Hong Kong Way” was organized by pro-democracy HongKongers in August 2019 during the #AntiELAB Movement.

The human chain expresses Hongkongers' yearning for freedom and basic human rights. Tens of thousands of Hongkongers lined up on pavements, overpasses, waterfronts and parks, snaking a line of nearly 30 miles (50km) long through Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories.

On January 4, 2022, Hong Kong court found Barrister Chow Hang-tung, chairperson of the Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, guilty of "inciting others to join an unauthorized assembly" in 2020 — being the annual June 4th vigil in Victoria Park. The Alliance has been the organizer of the annual candlelight vigil in Hong Kong in commemoration of the victims of the June 4 Tiananmen Massacre in Beijing since 1989.

West Kowloon Magistrate Amy Chan made the ruling according to a newspaper article and two social media posts published by Chow. Chow was sentenced to 15 months in jail. In addition to the sentence for another June 4 case, Chow will be jailed for 22 months in total.

As Chow defended herself, her speech won applause from the attendees of the court session.

Chow pointed out how commemorating June 4 was turned from the "bottomline of conscience" to a "dangerous red line". Following the removal https://bit.ly/3zoJArf June 4 related monuments and the closure of Stand News and Citizen News, this left no room to publicly talk about the 1989 June 4 Tiananmen Massacre. Nevertheless, Chow said that she believes in the power of words, "Words have life which cannot be determined by the authorities nor the court." In her conclusive statement, Chow cited the testimonies of the families of the Tiananmen Massacre and recounted how military tanks ran over civilians and pro-democracy protesters on the streets of Beijing in 1989. The judge interrupted Chow, questioning the relevance to the case. Chow said the victims of the Tiananmen Massacre are the victims of the case, "their voices should be heard in court more than mine."

The attendees of the court session applaused, while the judge ordered the police to "mark down their names and ID card numbers."

Chow concluded, "those who should plead for forgiveness are those executioners who destroyed families and those who called the Pillar of Shame ugly." Chow said she will preserve the candle of June 4 and bear the consequence of white terror.

#ChowHangTung‘s fiancé writes open letter: “When winter is here, spring is not too far away”

On January 4, 2022, Hong Kong court sentenced Barrister Chow Hang-tung, chairperson of the Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, to 15 months in jail for “inciting others to join an unauthorized assembly” in 2020. Said assembly was the annual June 4th vigil held every year since 1989 in Victoria Park, Hong Kong in commemoration of the victims of the June 4 Tiananmen Massacre in Beijing.

Yedu, Chow's fiancee and human rights activist in China, wrote a letter to Chow a few days prior to the court's ruling. The letter was slated to be released by Citizens News, but the news outlet was shut down on January 4, 2022. The letter was at last made public on Facebook.

In the letter, Yedu said a heavy sentence was expected and that rule of law has fallen in Hong Kong. Yedu wrote the letter when former and current management members of Stand News was arrested. "This is the beginning of a long winter," Yedu wrote.

"When winter is here, spring is not too far away,” Yedu also wrote.

Freedom is fragile. According to Yedu, freedom can be “trampled by the regime in a short time,” even that “the right to mourn would be silenced”. A regime does not need citizen, only subjects.

However, seeing how Hongkongers sent letters to Chow and showed support inside and outside of the court, Yedu said, “I can see that people's hearts are not dead yet.”

At last, Yedu cited the lyrics of “Flower of Freedom,” a song dedicated to the pro-democracy protesters who were wounded by or died of the 1989 June 4 Tiananmen Massacre in Beijing:

"However heavy the rain is, the flower of freedom will still bloom.”

On the same day, Chow's personal page was updated with the statement she gave in court on January 4, 2022:

"The only way to defend the freedom of speech is to keep talking."

Hong Kong Singers Respond to Difficult Times and Encourage #Hongkongers Not to Give Up Their Beliefs

In the annual Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation organized by Commercial Radio Hong Kong on January 1, 2022, several singers expressed words of encouragement to Hongkongers in their thank you speech, addressing the difficult times faced by the locals.

Vincy Chan whose song was named to one of the Top Ten in 2021, said on stage, "As long as we can cross over, there is a future. Uphold our beliefs, never give up -- we must hang on."

Stephanie Cheng, whose song titled "Drink more water" was named Top 4 in the 2021 music chart, expressed that the past year was a difficult one. She then said, "[we need to] be strong in order to overcome... It doesn't mean there is nothing one can do when in a fragile state. Take good care of ourself, then we will find hope. Hope everyone will not give up."

In response to the immigration wave out of Hong Kong, RubberBand, a local band, received the grand award for a song about farewell called "Ciao". While the drummer Ah Wai said the song is deidicated to all Hongkongers whenever they are, his fellow band member Lai Man added, "the truth will prevail." Ah Wai also expressed hope for reunion one day, despite having said goodbye. At last, vocal "no. 6" Mau Hou Cheong said, "We must live on, no matter you are staying in Hong Kong or you choose to leave. This song is dedicated to all Hongkongers. Thank you, Hongkongers. We are always Hongkongers."

At last, MC $OHO and KidNey, a two-men rapper group which was awarded the Silver Prize in the newcomer (band) catergory, said they need to thank the management of their agency. They continued, "because management is very important. There are so many problems in Hong Kong all because it is not well managed."
