HKUST’s Denial on Election Result of Student Council Member Arouse Discontent
Two months ago, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its Student Council Member Election, in which Miss Fu beat her pro-china opponent by a record-breaking 1000 votes. Despite the landslide victory, the school delayed the appointment over its claims of alleged electioneering from the Student Union, and started an investigation in which results were promised to be released on October 1. Since then no comments or results came out. The school eventually declared its denial to the election results and announced a re-election in the next semester, arousing widespread discontent among students.
The Student Union made a statement on December 5, comdemning the school’s behaviour of blaming the Student Union for the lost of the pro-china candidate, comparing the action with the pro-China politician Starry Lee who had falsely attributed her election loss to black-clad protestors besieging polling stations. The Student Union anathematized the school with “turning a blind eye to the public will”, and announced they will submit a list of high-level school officials to the Higher Institutions International Affairs Delegation to call for sanction from the international community.

Hong Kong Baptist University Among the First to Prolong Class Suspension Period in View of the Spread of Wuhan Pneumonia
Hong Kong Baptist University announced further suspension of on-campus classes until March 2, 2020. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology also announced the adoption of online teaching for the entire Spring semester.
The Hong Kong Government, however, has not issued any notice as to whether kindergartens, primary and secondary schools would resume as planned after February 17, 2020.
In Macau, it is decided on January 30 that all educational institutes would be closed until further notice.

HKUST Research Team Invents Coronavirus Detection Device Offering Diagnostic Results in 40 Minutes
A team of researchers from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (#HKUST) invented a portable 2019-nCoV detection device which uses microfluidic chip technology that can detect the virus in just 40 minutes from sampling to testing. The current polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology takes between 1.5 to 3 hours.
Unlike the large-scale PCR devices which use semiconductor to heat up testing samples, the new device uses a novel silicon-based micro-heater module for the purpose. The micro-heater, which has lower thermal mass and a better thermal conductivity, could speed up temperature rise from an average of 4-5℃ per second in conventional PCR devices to
around 30℃ per second in the new devices, hence greatly reducing the detection time.

The Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has refused to renew the contract of Shiu Ka-Chun, a lecturer in social work and pro-democracy lawmaker of the social welfare functional constituency. The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has terminated the tenured position of Benny Tai, an associate professor of law and convener of the “Occupy Central with Peace and Love” civil disobedience campaign in 2014.
The education sector has initiated a petition condemning the 2 universities, and urging them to retract their decisions. Up to now, nearly 4,000 signatures has been collected.
Choi Bo-King, former associate professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) and member of Scholars’ Alliance for Academic Freedom, condemned government for intervening academic freedom. She pointed out that the Chief Executive (CE) has been appointing crucial positions in the universities’ committee which made decision on terminating the tenured position of legal professor Benny Tai.
Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union vice-president of Ip Kin-Yuen also criticised the university council of HKU which ignored the opinion of the university's senate of academic staff and insisted on dismissing Benny Tai in such a short time.
Citing a survey of the Global Public Policy Institute, Dixon Sing Ming, associate ptofessor of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (#HKUST) stated that Hong Kong academic freedom was marked with a score of 0.442, sharing a similar ranking with Ethiopia. It implies that academic freedom in Hong Kong has been facing a very serious crackeddown. This reveals how the authorities is suppressing human rights and democracy movements in Hong Kong via different faculties.

The Education Sector and academia in Hong Kong have been targeted by the pro-Beijing forces and Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) mouthpiece.
The CCP-loyal Wen Wei Po and Tai Kung Pao have published a series of reports which slammed Dr. Lee Ching-kwan, a professor of sociology at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (#HKUST), for her speech delivered in an online forum held by Hong Kong Democracy Council (#HKDC) in May 2020.
The CCP-owned newspaper accused Lee of "advocating Hong Kong Independence" and "violating the national security law".
Organizedby HKDC on May 26, the discussion topic of the forum was: "Is this the end of the 'One Country Two Systems'?".
The speakers included the former leaders of now-disbanded Demosistō Nathan Law Kwun-chung and Joshua Wong Chi-fung, as well as Benny Tai Yiu-ting, who is a former law professor of the University of Hong Kong (#HKU).
The video of the online forum was deleted on the Facebook page of the HKDC. According to the video spread by the Beijing-loyal presses, Lee said in English, "I think it helps not to think Hong Kong as a Chinese city. We don't belong to China...I don't think. We belong to the world."
Lee Ching-kwan was the Dr. Chung Sze-yuen Professor of Social Science at HKUST and the sociology professor of University of California, Los Angeles.

In November 2019, 22-year-old #HKUST student Alex Chow Tsz-lok fell from the parking lot of Sheung Tak Estate during protests in Tseung Kwan O. He died four days later due to critical brain damage.
The death inquiries have stepped into the 15th day on December 4, 2020. The footage from the ground CCTV No.2 of Kwong Ming Court in Kwong Sun House played by the Court showed a black shadow descending from the parking lot at 12:51:37 in the morning.
Coroner Ko Wai-hung said the black shadow appeared to be Chow, but there was a time difference in the footage. Ko then ordered the police to search for evidence in nearby housing estates and buildings and called on the management property and the owners' corporation to offer assistance as much as possible.
Chow's mother cried bitterly after watching the clip. The video has existed for a long time, and it has been reviewed by the police before.
Coroner Ko said that there was another video showing the arrival and departure time of the ambulance A344 which took Chow to the hospital, and the time was not consistent with the testimony given by the ambulanceman.
Therefore, Ko has listed Fire Services Department as an interested party and has written to the director of Fire Services.
Ko said in order to adjust the time difference in the clip, and to allow police to investigate further, the proceedings would be adjourned to next Tuesday.
Ko also warned before showing the clip, "the content of the clip will be disturbing, family members and the jury must be psychologically prepared."
The police said earlier that the surveillance camera footage of Kwong Ming Court could not capture the parking lot situation, but Ko looked through the clips again for caution and found there were "crucial clips" that would influence the testimonies of the expert witnesses.
He added, "I could only tell the parents of Tze-lok that the video is very important." In order to ensure the investigation was sufficient and complete, he revisited the evidence during the lunch break yesterday, "only by doing this I can be reassured and carry on the proceedings".
However, the police detective Wei Koon-kit who was responsible for reviewing the security footage testified earlier he had obtained and watched all CCTV clips outside Kwong Ming Court.
The lawyer representing the family asked, "is there any footage that captured what was happening outside the parking lot?", Wei answered no, and said, "we would also like to have these footages for investigating this case, but the problem is the focus of the camera cannot capture the parking lot!"

Coroner Ko Wai-hung said the black shadow appeared to be Chow, but there was a time difference in the footage. Ko then ordered the police to search for evidence in nearby housing estates and buildings and called on the management property and the owners' corporation to offer assistance as much as possible.
Chow's mother cried bitterly after watching the clip. The video has existed for a long time, and it has been reviewed by the police before.
Coroner Ko said that there was another video showing the arrival and departure time of the ambulance A344 which took Chow to the hospital, and the time was not consistent with the testimony given by the ambulanceman.
Therefore, Ko has listed Fire Services Department as an interested party and has written to the director of Fire Services.
Ko said in order to adjust the time difference in the clip, and to allow police to investigate further, the proceedings would be adjourned to next Tuesday.
Ko also warned before showing the clip, "the content of the clip will be disturbing, family members and the jury must be psychologically prepared."
The police said earlier that the surveillance camera footage of Kwong Ming Court could not capture the parking lot situation, but Ko looked through the clips again for caution and found there were "crucial clips" that would influence the testimonies of the expert witnesses.
He added, "I could only tell the parents of Tze-lok that the video is very important." In order to ensure the investigation was sufficient and complete, he revisited the evidence during the lunch break yesterday, "only by doing this I can be reassured and carry on the proceedings".
However, the police detective Wei Koon-kit who was responsible for reviewing the security footage testified earlier he had obtained and watched all CCTV clips outside Kwong Ming Court.
The lawyer representing the family asked, "is there any footage that captured what was happening outside the parking lot?", Wei answered no, and said, "we would also like to have these footages for investigating this case, but the problem is the focus of the camera cannot capture the parking lot!"

On November 9, 2021, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (#HKUST) announced that its president #WeiShyy will step down on October 19 next year, almost a year before his five-year term is due to end.
Shyy didn't explain why he was resigning.
The aerospace professor became head of HKUST in September 2018 and is the President with the shortest tenure.
During Anti-ELAB movement in 2019, #AlexChow, a HKUST student, who fell to his death in a car park after partaking a nearby pro-democracy protest.
When the news broke out on November 8, 2019, Shyy suspended an ongoing congregation immediately.
He was seen shedding and wiping away tears while asking participants of the ceremony to stand and observe a moment of silence.
On the same day, Shyy issued an open letter requesting Hong Kong authorities to conduct independent and thorough investigation into the cause of death of Alex Chow, saying the police force, in particular, should clarify why there was a delay in first aid assistance.
Shyy stated in the open letter, "If there is no satisfactory explanation, it will set off our indignation. "

HKUST Students Held Memorial for Urumqi Fire Victims
Around 9pm on Nov 27, mainland students at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (#HKUST) gathered at the seafront in memory of the victims of the fatal apartment fire in Urumqi. They laid down paper cranes and candles, arranging them to form "11.24", the date of the fire. Students also placed candles and memorial messages at the university's north gate.
One person came dressed in the white protective gear often worn by Chinese anti-pandemic personnel who carried out lockdown and testing procedures. He marched from the seafront to the north gate, carrying a sign parodying the notices left on Chinese websites after being blocked by censors.
