Hospital Authority criticised for providing substandard masks, disregarding safety of medical staff

In the face of Coronavirus outbreak, Hospital Authority(HA) was unable to provide medical staff with protective items meeting WHO recommendation specialised for WARS.

From the graph above, it is shown that masks provided by HA only meet the standard of ASTM Level 1.

Note:
- BFE (Bacterial Filtration Efficiency) for 3 micron block pollen, flying maggot
- PFE (Particle Filtration Efficiency) for 0.1 micron blocks viruses such as influenza and SARS
- VFE (Virus Filtration Efficiency) for 0.1 to 5 microns

ASTM F2100-11 divides mask materials into 3 levels: first level protection (BFE), second level protection (PFE), and third level protection (VFE)

Pro-government Critics Criticize Medical Staff's Call For Strike, Requesting Punishments and Dismissal for Participants

Pro-government columnist Chris Wat Wing-yin wrote on her Weibo page today (January 30) a stern criticism on frontline medical staff's plan to put on a strike which was meant to assert pressure on the government for a full border lockdown between Hong Kong and China to halt the influx of potential Novel Coronavirus victims, a burden that existing medical infrastructure can no longer support.

She used “deserters of an army should be executed” as an analogy, calling on the Hospital Authority to dismiss those who participate in the strike.

In her post, Wat also cited police as an example, saying that since the anti-extradition movement, police have “sacrificed their lives, sacrificed the privacy of their families and friends, sacrificed their reputation” in order to carry out their duties.

Sharing the same view, Sergeant Lau Chak-kei, also nicknamed "Bald Sheriff Lau Sir", quoted Wat’s post on his Weibo page. He also added his own comment that "I really hope that they will be infected by the new coronavirus". Probably only after realizing what an embarrassment his outrageous comment might cause, he toned down and commented, “One day when the staff is sick, then he can truly understand a patient’s feeling”.

Transport Department Grants Free Pass to Zhuhai During Coronavirus Outbreak

While the pneumonia epidemic in Wuhan continues, confirmed cases in Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau has also been escalating every day. While many countries and cities have implemented border lockdowns, especially towards entries from mainland China, the Transport Department in Hong Kong has done the exact opposite by announcing a free pass policy for small passenger cars for 7 consecutive days, starting from 24th January 2020 to 30th January 2020

On the 28th January, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Administration further extended this policy for small passenger cars from 30th January 2020 to 2nd February 2020.

What was even more unusual was that the Transport Department has not uploaded the latest announcement on their website, which is a highly incoherent move, as compared to the department's long standing practice of keeping their announcements up to date.

Editor's Note: The government's decision to allow free passage through the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao has caused major criticisms amongst citizens from all walks of life. Yet with the Wuhan epidemic raging throughout Mainland China, the HKSAR government decided to extend the time of free passage to 2 February. Is the government unable to stop the extension of the free passage, or are they simply unwilling to do so?

Nevertheless, this move has great potential of worsening the spread of the Wuhan pneumonia in Hong Kong.

Furious Shoppers Demand Government Involvement in Stable Mask Supply; Police Says No Free Masks for Citizens

As the Wuhan pneumonia continues to spread around the globe, locals have been stocking up filter masks and disinfecting items for protection against the virus. This has resulted in a shortage in mask supplies. Upon knowing that stocks of filter masks have been replenished at various Watson’s branches, a long line appeared early this morning (January 30) in Tseung Kwan O Plaza, waiting for the shop to open. However, the supply was limited, and a large number of shoppers actually left empty-handed.

Unexpectedly, the disappointed shoppers showed great understanding towards the situation. Instead, they furiously denounced the HKSAR government and their incompetence in stepping in to help stabilize supply of filter masks. They considered this a basic step that any responsible government should take during an outbreak of such scale. Shoppers also suggested for the government to distribute free masks to all HKID holders.

Much to the disappointment of general public, the Hong Kong Police Force issued a press release today (January 30), clarifying that the force will not distribute free masks to local citizens, and the government also will not dispatch any free face masks to the families of the police force. The force condemned rumour-mongers, claiming that these news are spread with malicious intent. They also claimed that they are determine to work with the community to fight the spread of the Wuhan Pneumonia.

The poor are wearing the same mask for 10 days; NGO criticizes Hong Kong Government for its Indifference

Fears of the new Coronavirus infection sparked off a rush to pharmacies for disease preventive products like protective masks and rubbing alcohol in Hong Kong.

In Kowloon Bay, over a thousand residents queued up outdoors for hours overnight only to discover stores have sold out of masks. Most pharmacies had ran out of stock; the rest were sold at unreasonably high prices.

The scramble for commodities has created a shortage of masks among grassroots, as charitable organizations pointed out: Many had already ran out of masks and had to share used masks among family members.

69-year-old Mr. Mok rented a rooftop slum on an old tenement building in Kwai Chong. He told Now News in his diaphilated shack that he got his only mask in the hospital on #Jan30. To reduce the risk of infection, he only went out twice during the period, and minimized his consumption of meat in order to prevent going out as well as to avoid the skyrocketed food prices.

NGO said they could do nothing. In a press conference held by several religious concern groups, an NGO aiming to serve subdivided apartments residents said that many families did not have any masks left.

The groups demanded the government to ensure supply and control the market price. They also criticized the government for its indifference, and implored it to allocate masks from its stock to the impoverished.

#VentusLau believes he has done his best and the next generation will do better

Ventus Lau has been arrested four times since 2019. Seven years ago, he thought he could change Hong Kong if he took part in politics. However, he felt his political life was over after he was disqualified from Legislation Council elections.

In 2019, the anti-ELAB (Extradition Law Amendment Bill) movement led to his political life's resurgence.

In this movement, as an organizer of rallies and marches, he submitted applications for Letters of No Objection. In the end, he was arrested thrice and was accused of four different crimes. The maximum term of imprisonment is ten years in jail for the crime of rioting.

After participating in the pro-democracy primary election, Ventus Lau was quiet for a while and planned to enjoy his last period of freedom until he would be sent to prison. However, he was unexpectedly arrested again because of participating in the primary election and felt like fodder this time. "53 people, including me, have done all we could. What else I can do…," he said.

He didn't complain and feel regret, but he felt sorry that he didn't do his best. "if we use Baggio's rhetoric, we are building a path [for the future]. If the authority wants to arrest me and I need to sacrifice, it's fine. But I hope someone behind can pick it up this tough job, so that my sacrifice will have meaning," he said.

"I have strong feeling that the younger generation will do much better than me," he said.

Hong Kong residents now eligible for special UK visa

The visa, which is open to holders of a British National (Overseas) passport and their immediate dependents, will offer a fast track to UK citizenship. This scheme allows Hong Kong residents to come to the UK, with some 300,000 people expected to apply.

But the Chinese foreign ministry said it would no longer recognise the BNO passport as a travel document.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "I am immensely proud that we have brought in this new route for Hong Kong BNOs to live, work and make their home in our country. In doing so we have honoured our profound ties of history and friendship with the people of Hong Kong, and we have stood up for freedom and autonomy - values both the UK and Hong Kong hold dear."

US media: #BGI and the People’s Liberation Army collaborate to collect DNA data

According to reports of The Reuters and current affairs program "60 Minutes" of CBS, BGI Group – the world’s largest biotechnology company, is ties to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), including working with PLA supercomputer experts on research that range from respiratory pathogens to brain science. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, BGI sells millions of COVID-19 test kits in Europe, America, and Australia. US security officials have warned American labs against using Chinese test kids, concerning China on gathering foreign genetic data for its own research, though BGI strongly denied.

By searching over 40 publicly available documents and research papers in Chinese and English, the Reuters showed the links between BGI Group and PLA are closer than previously understood, reflecting how China integrates private technology companies into military-related research under President Xi Jinping.

Hongkongers in Nottingham gather in remembrance of Pro-democracy protests at home

On the eve of Chinese New Year (January 30), around 400 Hongkongers in Nottingham came together to tell people in UK about China's tyranny in Hong Kong, arresting and silencing dissidents.

A miniature of the Pillar of Shame, a sculpture made to honour victims of Tiananmen Square Massacre in Beijing on June 4, 1989, was shown in the gathering and street stalls were set up to show how citizens in Hong Kong rose to protest for democracy and freedom in past several years.
