National Security Police Conduct Investigation in University; Physical Conflict between Security Guard and Journalist

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) graduation ceremony was originally scheduled on Nov 19, 2020. Due to the pandemic, it was held online.

Hundreds of graduates initiated a pro-democracy march on campus on the day of congregation. During the demonstration, they observef silence, chanted slogans and displayed banners.

After that, the university reported to the police concerning the potential violation of the group gathering restriction and the National Security Law (#NSL).

On Nov 20, National Security Police entered the campus to search for evidence at different locations.

When covering the news, citizen journalist Siu Wan was said to have crossed the cordon set up by the CUHK security guards. The security guard intervened, but it became a physical altercation with the journalist. The journalist was pushed by the security guard, while the guard said he himself was being pushed.

A source said many security guards were retired police officers. The CUHK security team reported the clash to the police.

When police arrived to handle the dispute, that plainclothes security guard was brought to Emergency unit vehicle, and the journalist got into the PPRB car for investigation.

At around 6:30 pm, six police officers went to the CUHK security office with the journalist and plainclothes security guard about the dispute. After that, the journalist quoted the police officer that both could leave because the incident didn’t involve any criminal crime.

Cultural Revolution 2.0: China-run Newspapers Slam HKUST Professor for Breaching National Security Law

The Education Sector and academia in Hong Kong have been targeted by the pro-Beijing forces and Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) mouthpiece.

The CCP-loyal Wen Wei Po and Tai Kung Pao have published a series of reports which slammed Dr. Lee Ching-kwan, a professor of sociology at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (#HKUST), for her speech delivered in an online forum held by Hong Kong Democracy Council (#HKDC) in May 2020.

The CCP-owned newspaper accused Lee of "advocating Hong Kong Independence" and "violating the national security law".

Organizedby HKDC on May 26, the discussion topic of the forum was: "Is this the end of the 'One Country Two Systems'?".

The speakers included the former leaders of now-disbanded DemosistĹŤ Nathan Law Kwun-chung and Joshua Wong Chi-fung, as well as Benny Tai Yiu-ting, who is a former law professor of the University of Hong Kong (#HKU).

The video of the online forum was deleted on the Facebook page of the HKDC. According to the video spread by the Beijing-loyal presses, Lee said in English, "I think it helps not to think Hong Kong as a Chinese city. We don't belong to China...I don't think. We belong to the world."

Lee Ching-kwan was the Dr. Chung Sze-yuen Professor of Social Science at HKUST and the sociology professor of University of California, Los Angeles.

HK Government Suspends Local School and Welcomes HK-China Border-Crossers With Quarantine Exemption

The Health Authorities in Hong Kong announced on November 20, 2020 that face-to-face classes for primary 1-3 students will be suspended for two weeks starting on Nov 23.

With more new cases confirmed in the city, the Heath Secretary said the coronavirus situation has worsened.

Nevertheless, on the same day that primary schools will partially be suspended in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong government is opening the Hong Kong-China border and exempting the border-crossing people from the 14-day quarantine.

The government called it the "Return2HK" scheme, which will allow registered people to leave Macau and Southern China and go to Hong Kong without the need to undergo 14 days of quarantine.

The daily quota is initially set to be 5,000 people. Among them, up to 3,000 people will be allowed to enter through the Shenzhen Bay and 2,000 via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge per day.

According to pro-Beijing newspaper Sing Tao Daily, the government has plans to increase the quota, and extend the quarantine-free arrangement to other provinces in China, even before the scheme is launched.
