DAB supporters: “aunties” took perks but voted for pan-democrats

(27 Nov) The District Council election results were shocking. Apart from the overwhelming votes from the “yellow ribbons” (i.e., pan-democrats’ supporters), the reason why the pro-establishment camp lost was that their supporters had gone rogue.

A netizen posted on a social forum to recount a story his mother told him. She and a lot of neighbours had always attended activities organized by the DAB. They enjoyed the perks from the DAB but did not vote for them. This led to an inaccurate vote estimate, causing the DAB to lose in the election.

The netizen pointed out that his mother had never been enthusiastic about politics. She felt that the DAB district councillor appeared to be “doing something” for the district since there were lots of gifts and perks from the events they organized. Hence she sometimes volunteered when she was free and became a supporter of DAB. However, given the recent political turmoil, some sophisticated supporters were disgusted by the pro-establishment camp’s actions. Also, they were dissatisfied that the pro-establishment district councillors were unwilling to assist or discuss kids from the neighbourhood who had been arrested. These supporters were devastated by their acts.

The netizen pointed out that, according to his mother’s knowledge, a lot of “aunties” (i.e., ladies from the neighbourhood) pretended to support the pro-establishment camp but secretly voted for the pan-democrats candidates. This, directly and indirectly, caused the pro-establishment district councillor to lose the election. Some aunties also predicted that, after the pro-establishment candidates had lost the election, they may spend more resources and give out more perks to gain support for the next election. Therefore, these supporters would definitely not “sever ties” with the pro-establishment camp.

As previously discussed, although the ratio of the votes between the pan-democrats and pro-establishment camp was 60:40 in this election, the fact that the pan-democrats still managed to win 60% of votes, in spite of those dubious new voter registrations in the past year, implied that some pro-establishment voters had gone rogue.

DAB uses the highest protective equipments for private purposes

(12 Feb) Leung Kar Ming, a district councillor of Shing Hong district of Tsing Yi and a member of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB), stopped meeting with people and abandoned residents since the outbreak of the epidemic. She was so scared that her office put out a notice saying the open hours were suspended because of a renovation. Residents were extremely angry.

When residents of the Cheung Hong Estate evacuated and needed her support, she disappeared all the way. After that, she showed up with high specification of protective equipments. Why did she need such high specification? Even medical staff and firefighters didn’t have gears that good; only the police and she did.

On the day of district council election, the Presiding Officer unexpectedly ruled all 500 questionable ballots in favour of Leung Kar Ming. So she was elected. At that time, residents were angry and surrounded the Presiding Officer. They kept asking questions but got no answer. Finally, residents were pushed out by the Police Tactical Unit (PTU).

After Leung Kar Ming started her term, she disappeared all time, and didn’t answer residents’ calls. The district is more and more deteriorated and insanitary. She doesn’t care and disappears to who-knows-where. Her office is always closed.

Primary school teacher accused of teaching the Opium War incorrectly
DAB urges the government to follow up on teaching material standards and disciplinary measures

(03 May)Legislators Elizabeth Quat, Wilson Or Chong-shing, Steven Ho Chun-yin and Holden Chow Ho-ding of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) wrote to the Legislative Council's Panel on Education today. Their letter requested that the government modify its meeting agenda to follow up on teaching material standards,
methods of maintaining pedagogy standards in teachers, disciplinary measures for confirmed professional misconduct,
etc.to prevent teachers from using education to poison students' minds.

The letter stated that the DAB recently received numerous complaints that a general studies teacher from the Sik Sik Yuen-sponsored Ho Lap Primary School deliberately distorted historical accounts. The alleged teacher falsely claimed that "Britain sent troops against China to ban smoking". The DAB also mentioned that the internet circulated information of a Primary 2 General Studies textbook. "Longman General Studies Children Look at History 2C" content was purportedly biased and lacking in positive case studies of Mainland China. It had deliberate exaggerations of the differences between the two places [Hong Kong and the Mainland].

Pro-Beijing Lawmakers Only Take Favourable Legal Opinion in Legislative Council Meetings

At the controversial House Committee meeting in the Legislative Council on May 8, the pro-Beijing faction showed how they took in opinion that was favourable to the Establishment and refused to listen to different opinions.

Under these circumstances, the pro-Beijing fraction quoted barristers Benjamin Yu and Jenkin Suen's opinion that DAB chairperson Starry Lee had the right to preside over the afternoon meeting.

Pro-Beijing lawmaker Michael Luk Chung-hung of The Federation of Trade Unions pointed out that barrister Philip Dykes and legal professor Johannes Chan Man Mun are the "trump cards" of the pro democratic faction. Luk claimed their positions and answers made discussion meaningless. Beijing loyalist Junius Ho Kwan-yiu added that the internal meeting should be based on Yu's opinion, "Because he is a lot brighter than Philip Dykes."

Two Pro-China Groups Suspected of Colluding and Forging Public Support for National Security Law

Led by Starry Lee Wai-king, Chairwoman of Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB), a cross-sector alliance was recently formed to support the enactment of National Security Law in Hong Kong which initiated a signature campaign last Tuesday (May 26). Several government officials graced the event, reportedly to express their fidelity to the Chinese government.

At the same venue, a pro-China organization, the New Home Association, was found handing out freebies while members of DAB were collecting supporters’ signatures for the National Security Law from those lining up for the giveaways. Some elderly put down their signatures without knowing its purpose.

Citizens suspected that the two groups were colluding and exhausting all means to collect citizens’ signatures to forge public support for the National Security Law.

Pro-China party twists official statistics in a bid to blame economic suffering on pro-democracy movement

The pro-China political party Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB), created a new Facebook post entitled “How badly has black-clad violence battered Hong Kong in past one year?”. Along with the post, a set of statistics concerning the economic, crime, and unemployment statuses of Hong Kong were duly shared, with the intent to highlight the unspoken impact of anti-ELAB protest activities and clashes throughout 2019. Factwire, however, looked into these numbers, and most of which are performance data from the first 4 months of 2020, during the height of Hong Kong’s coronavirus outbreak. It is an apparent disinformation campaign attempting to mislead citizens by summing up causes of complicated economic adversities on a single factor.

Looking at the data, the value of total retail sales was compared between the April’s of this year and last year, while the comparison on travelers was drawn between January 2020 and 2019. The post also mentioned unemployment and underemployment in Hong Kong. After verification, these figures were confirmed as only seasonal adjustments for the period from February to April 2020. When issuing the relevant data, the Tourism Board and the Government both mentioned the impact of epidemic outbreak, and consistently both did not mention anti-ELAB social movement as the cause.

The post also compared the crime figures from January to March this year with the same period last year, with information from the Hong Kong Police Force, in which cases concerning robberies and fraud were said not related to anti-ELAB movement.

Beijing Loyalists condemn US, calling the #Sanction "disgusting"

The US Treasury sanctioned 11 Hong Kong and Chinese officials, including HK and Macau Affairs Office director Xiao Baolong, Liaison Office head Luo Huining, Chief Executive Carrie Lam and Police Commissioner Tang Ping-keung.

The #DAB, a pro-Beijing party, issued a statement on Aug 8 condemning the sanction, calling the accusations “baseless and arbitrary” and that the action was to “comply with the Trump administration and his anti-China policies, aiming to benefit Trump’s re-election campaign”.

The DAB claimed that tge “majority in HK supported the implementation of the #NationalSecurityLaw” and “believed in the Central Government and One Country Two Systems”.

They condemn the U.S. government for "hegemonism and double standards" and "intervening with HK and China’s domestic affairs": “The US defames One Country Two Systems and its healthy operation in HK" and "it is disgusting".

China's Liaison Office Found Helping Pro-Beijing Party with Fundraising

DAB Annual Income Over 120 Million while applying for government subsidies

The government continues to gradually release lists of beneficiaries of the Employment Support Scheme. The DAB, Hong Kong's largest party in the pro-Beijing camp, has "successfully fought for" [1] around 7.6 million HKD in subsidies, being ranked no.1 among subsidies for political parties. Stand News had read through financial statements the DAB submitted to the Companies Registry and found the party still had solid financial strength. As of late-April 2019, the party held around 80 million HKD in assets, with some income coming from a singing segment performed by vice-director of the Hong Kong Liaison Office He Jing in a fundraising dinner.

The income of the DAB for the 2018 / 19 term (from April 2018 to March 2019) is recorded at over 128 million HKD, which is the fifth consecutive year with income exceeding 100 million HKD, which is a new high for non-election year.

Referring back to the data for the past 10 years, the DAB's total income reached over 1 billion HKD, and had for five consecutive years had income that exceeded 100 million HKD, with income during LegCo-election year increasing substantially. But since the last two years had the DAB have an income of around 120 million despite not being election-year, it remains to be seen whether their income would reach new heights during election year.

It must be noted that over half of the DAB's income came from donations in the 2018 / 19 term, clocking in at around 70 million HKD. As Hong Kong currently lacks party legislations, parties are not required to announce the names of their benefactors, resulting in the public not being able to know the origins of the donations.

One of their main sources of income come from fundraiser events, which comprise 34% of their annual income. The DAB hosts fundraiser dinners biannually, with the last dinner being hosted in November 2018. 70 tables were established that night, with the highest donating table donating 280 thousand HKD. Starry Lee, the chairperson of the DAB, had said that "the DAB have voted with money tonight".

During their auction segment that night, Xu Rongmao, chairman of Shimao Property and member of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee auctioned off a calligraphy piece by Jao Tsung-I for 10 million HKD. Charles Yeung, Chairman of Glorious Sun Enterprises Limited, auctioned off a calligraphy piece from Mo Yan for 6 million.

During their performance segment, vice-director of the Hong Kong Liaison Office He Jing and Cheung Ming-man raised 9 million HKD by performing "My Chinese Heart", former chairpersons of the party Jasper Tsang and Tam Yiu-chung did stand-up comedy raising 5.1 million HKD, while current chairperson Starry Lee raised 5 million HKD singing "Chinese Dream" off-key.

The DAB had received over 40 million HKD in donations during that fundraising dinner, including other segments and auctioned off items, which is ten times the amount the Democratic Party received in donations during their anniversary fundraising event.

#WhiteTerror Spreads to #Sport Sector: Pro-China Legislator Condemns Hong Kong Athletes

According to Hong Kong's Chief Executive #CarrieLam, the SAR Government had purchased the broadcasting rights for the #Tokyo #OlympicGames, and arranged for five TV stations to broadcast.

In the panel meeting on Home Affairs at the Legislative Council (#LegCo), athletes representative of Hong Kong were, however, attacked by the pro-Beijing DAB party.

For instance, Leung Che-cheung, a #DAB member, criticized the Hong Kong Ladies’ Foil Team members, for reportedly hand signing the pro-democracy “Five Demand, Not One Less” slogan during the 2019 World Cup.

The pro-China legislator comdemns it as an action "against the Government".

Leung continued to ask the Government to follow up with this matter.

Concuring with Leung, the Government's Commissioner for Sports Yeung Tak-keung claimed that “politics should be separated from sports”.

Yeung said that athletes must sign a guideline before participating in competitions, and should not express political demands on the Olympic occasions. Yeung emphasized that there is any violation, the game would be suspended and the personnel would be penalized.

Pro-China Party Angers Hong Kong Sport Fans for Attacking
#Badminton Star for Wearing Black

After being attacked by a member of DAB, a pro-China party, for donning black in Tokyo Olympics, Hong Kong Badminton athlete Angus Ka-long Ng lost his latest match in the elimination round on July 28, 2021. Ng expressed immense disappointment but thanked his supporters for rooting for him.

Ng has won in an earlier match against Mexican representative Lino Munoz on July 25. Despite his victory, Ng had to spend time between matches to respond to the criticism sparked by the pro-Beijing camp--its members had demanded Ng to withdraw from the Olympics, all because he has worn a black tee shirt.

It can only be assumed that the pro-Beijing party associated the color black to pro-democracy movement which they oppose.

Ng explained on his social media page that he has no sponsor and received no authorization to print the Hong Kong SAR emblem on his own tee shirt.

The criticism of the pro-Beijing camp led to the rapid change of Ng's tee shirt by the Hong Kong Olympics Commitee within days.

On July 28, Ng was given a new tee-shirt in white and green, printed with the Hong Kong SAR emblem, sponsored by Fila, in a competion with Kevin Cordon, representative of Guatemala. However, the tee-shirt was not Ng's first choice for his match. During the match, he kept wiping the sweat that was not absorbed by the tee shirt.

After losing the match, Ng expressed his frustration and thanked his supporters on Instagram. "I am moved by all the support and encouragement. I know I'm not alone. Maybe some people are destined to play tragic roles in life," the Hong Kong Badminton star wrote. "I will stand up again, but it'll take some time."

The pro-Beijing camp's criticism over Ng's black tee shirt has angered many people in Hong Kong. Many netizens felt for Ng and pointed out that the incident has imposed unnecessary pressure on Hong Kong athletes in international games.

Make vaccines mandatory for elderlies, Pro-Beijing lawmaker urges

Hong Kong's COVID-19 death toll soared to its highest at 7,612 on March 31, during the fifth-wave of Omicron outbreak.

Elderly care homes are reportedly facing the gravest threat, as too many elderly residents were not vaccinated due to chronic health issues. Staff shortages and lack of on-site isolation facilities also added to the soaring death rate.

During a Legislative Council Health Affairs Committee meeting, Holden Chow Ho-ding, vice-chairman of the pro-China Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Progress of Hong Kong (#DAB), urged the government to act “decisively” and make it mandatory for the city’s elderly to be vaccinated.

“Reduce deaths. Reduce severe cases. The government should act decisively, and make it legally required for seniors aged 70 and above to be vaccinated," said Chow.

Regina Ip Criticised APEC having "Unfair Condition" that Beijing has to Decide whether to Attend with this Insult

The #WashingtonPost reported earlier that the #US #DepartmentofState denied #JohnLee to enter the US border for the #APEC summit. Yet, the Hong Kong government can still send other senior officials to participate.

The pro-establishment camp criticised the US's practice with statements and journals yesterday. Among them, #ReginaIp, the convenor of the Executive Council, wrote in #ChinaDaily that the APEC summit has an "unknown future" because of John Lee. She also questioned whether it is worthwhile for the government to send another official to attend if the ban is "harmful and unreasonable". She pointed out that the Chinese "highest leader" should decide whether he should accept "the insult".

Besides, #TaKungPao quoted statements from various politicians in a report, including #MargaretChan from #CPPCC, #KingsleyWong from #HKFTU and #BraveChan from #DAB.

Note:
CPPCC refers to Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference
HKFTU refers to Hong Kong Federation of Trade Union
DAB refers to Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong
