Lest We Forget: 8 Months After 831 Attack, Citizens Lay Flowers and Tributes for Casualties

April 30 marks the 8th month since the Aug 31 Prince Edward attacks, when riot police attacked and terrorized passengers at the Prince Edward MTR Station. Despite the pandemic, civilians bravely came out to lay flowers as a tribute to the victims, just right outside of the Prince Edward MTR Station, as they have always been doing over the previous months.

Police moved their cordon lines 2-3 meters farther out than before, and over 40 officers were standing by on scene. Councilors from Yau Tsim Mong District were tending to the flowers and tributes. Plans have been made for them to bring these flowers and tributes to the Sandy Ridge Cemetery tomorrow, where over 200 missing protesters were presumed to be anonymously buried.

A councilor commented that these flowers were not just meant for those who have perished on the night of Aug 31, but they were for all the victims who have laid their lives down for the cause throughout the anti-ELAB movement. This includes people who have suffered from the senseless violence by the police, and all the victims of the injustice that has traumatized this city.

Police Fine Pro-democracy Activists Despite Protesting in Group of 4

On April 30 morning, police fined 8 pro-democracy activists from the League of Social Democrats (LSD) for allegedly violating the gathering ban, despite that the group demonstrated in 2 groups of 4 people.

The activists protested against the police's ban on the Labour Day march organised by the pro-democracy Confederation of Trade Unions, citing the risk posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The LSD’s chairman, Raphael Wong, tried to reason with the police, but the officers asked him to "talk to the court" instead. Wong accused the police of using the ban on social gatherings to suppress freedom of assembly in Hong Kong. He vowed they would not pay the HK$2,000 fine and would fight the case in court.

Former Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten: Beijing statements on Liaison Office role a "flagrant breach of the Joint Declaration and the Basic Law"

Patten wrote in a letter dated on April 26, 2020:

"Beijing officials have made statements about their role in Hong Kong which are a flagrant breach of the Joint Declaration and the Basic Law.

They claim the right to call all the shots in Hong Kong thus destroying once and for all the promises that Hong Kong would have a high degree of local autonomy. They seem intent on destroying Deng Xiaoping’s concept of “one country, two systems”.

At the same time a group of fifteen moderate and highly respected Democrats have been arrested for taking part in demonstrations last year as far back as August when 1.7 million people had taken to the streets...

I have spoken to respected members of Hong Kong’s civil society this week, and they fear that this is only the beginning..."

Protestor beaten by police in disguise left with bone fractures, might not fully recover: Scars that can never be erased

On the evening of August 11 2019, police disguised as protestors for the first time to conduct arrests. Lam Wai Kwan, one of the arrestees, was pushed over, subdued, and beaten by undercover officers at Causeway Bay that night, ending up with at least five bone fractures in his left shoulder. In the past 6 months, acupuncture, bloodletting, and physiotherapy have became Lam's daily routine. 8 months have passed since the assault by police; despite the lengthy recovery ahead, Lam's determination to seek accountability for police brutality has never changed.

Police Hide in Public Toilet

Assistant police commissioner Rupert Dover and his wife have allegedly been running an 1100 sq ft unit in Pik Shui Sun Tsuen as a guesthouse without a license. The ads, targetting foreigners on a Facebook page, offered periods of stay from 2 night to a month, which can result in an income as high as HKD310,000.

The couple can be considered breaking the property rules and operating unlicensed guesthouse. The police force has yet made any comments. Legco member suggested that ICAC's intervention might be necessary if more violations are found.

According to Next Magazine, Dover initially refused to make any comments on the questhouse, and walked around the village trying to get away from the reporter. After about 5 minutes, Dover dashed into the public toilet and came back out wearing a face mask and said the license belongs to his wife's family. When the reporter posed further questions, Dover ran away and releatedly yelled "Leave me alone!"

Hong Kong Police Runs Company, Wife Recruits Staff in Shenzhen

Apple Daily has found that assistant police commissioner Rupert Dover launched a voltage regulator company in Hong Kong two years ago. According to Dover, the company is going to be his focus when he retires from the police force, and the copmany is not in operation yet.

However, Apple Daily found that Dover's wife has already started posting recruitment ads for electrical engineers to Shenzhen to test and repair voltage regulators. Based on information about Dover's family company, staff in Hong Kong are responsible for communicating with and monitoring the work in related factories in Shenzhen; which implied that Dover might have already starting participating in his family business even before his company was launched.

Riot Police Repeatedly Thrust and Shove Subdued Men as if Venting Anger

#Apr30 marked the 8th mensiversary of Prince Edward Attack last August when a slew of riot police discriminately assaulted pro-democracy protests returning home on a subway train. Netizens called on civilians to present flowers and mourn for those sacrificed in the attack. A substantial police force was deployed, encircling the Prince Edward station.

On the day at around 21:07, a private car accidentally hit the right door panel of a police car nearby Sai Yee Street. Two men on the private car, reportedly reporters of online media, were immediately intercepted and later arrested.

A video clip circulated on the Internet, showed the arrest of two reporters, with one of them being subdued to the ground. The video showed riot police fiercely kicked the man on the ground for multiple times and yelled, “are you attempting to assault police? Are you trying to crush policeman by car?”

Another man in a red shirt was also subdued with his hands buckled by a sling. One officer suspected to be injured, reproached, “you almost hit me”.

Low cost Xiaomi Comes with a hefty price: Customers' Privacy

#Xiaomi is one of the top four smartphone makers in the world by market share, behind Apple, Samsung and Huawei.

Cybersecurity researcher Gabi Cirlig points out that:

1. Xiaomi browser recorded all the websites he visited, including search engine queries whether with Google or the privacy-focused DuckDuckGo, and every item viewed on a news feed feature of the Xiaomi software.

2. Tracking happened even if he used the supposedly private “incognito” mode

3. Xiaomi recorded what folders he opened and to which screens he swiped, including the status bar and the settings page

4. All of the data was being packaged up and sent to remote servers in Singapore and Russia, though the Web domains they hosted were registered in Beijing.

Cybersecurity researcher Andrew Tierney adds that the browsers shipped by Xiaomi on Google Play—Mi Browser Pro and the Mint Browser—were collecting the same data.

Activists, experts and policy makers speak out on Chinese state influence in Canada

Activists, experts and policy makers are speaking out on what they describe as an ever-growing “influence” of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in Canadian business, academic and political circles.

There has been mounting scrutiny on the CCP’s increased flexing of its intelligence muscles since the ascension of President Xi Jinping in 2013.

Canada’s intelligence agencies have taken the rare step of naming China as a significant threat to the country’s sovereignty, with CSIS director David Vigneault publicly saying in a February 2021 speech that Canadians are being “aggressively” targeted by foreign interests – and Beijing was engaged in “activities that are a direct threat to our national security and sovereignty.”

Private Screening of "Siege of CUHK" Cancelled in HK; Government Still Sends Warning Letter

The Hong Kong Social Workers General Union (#HKSWGU) cancelled a scheduled screening of the documentary "Siege of CUHK" for its staff on May 1, 2021. The union had subsequently notified the staff who had signed up.

The Government's Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration, however, still hand delivered a warning letter to the Union's office the day before the screening.

The warning emphasized that the film had not received a certificate of exemption or approval, and screening it would be illegal and punishable by a HK$200,000 fine and jail time of up to 1 year.

"Siege of CUHK", produced by HK Feature Limited, documents the clashes at Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) between police and the pro-democracy protesters during the 2019 Anti-ELAB movement.

Responding to media inquiry, Director General of the union Hui Lai Ming said that she felt very tired, and did not comment on the actions of the authorities or the police. She only said that in the future, "we'll show what we can, and not show what we can't."

US urges WHO assembly to include Taiwan

The United States on Friday renewed calls for the World Health Organization's decision-making body to include Taiwan over China's objections, pointing to the island's strong record on fighting Covid.

The World Health Assembly will gather in Geneva starting on May 24, its latest annual meeting in the midst of the global pandemic that has killed more than three million people.

"Taiwan's outstanding control of Covid-19 and its donations of PPE demonstrate its strong contribution to global health," State Department spokesman Ned Price said, referring to personal protective equipment.
