🇸🇩 Sudan’s capital Khartoum has turned into a war zone with a split in the military forces. The Sudanese army is battling the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) which is a paramilitary force, and the 10 million residents are taking cover to avoid the artillery exchanges, and air force operations against the RSF.

The situation today in Sudan should be a wake-up call to the Syrian opposition calling for normalization with Israel. Looking at the case of Sudan, we can see that following the U.S. and Israel down the path of normalization has not benefitted Sudan, or its people.

🗽🌍 The United States may not want to renew its leadership role in the region, but at least it should try to take advantage of the opportunity to foster greater stability in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf. 

It’s time to restore relations with Iran and to find a way to return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the Iran nuclear accord that marked the success of John Kerry’s activist Department of State in the Obama administration. Since Israel benefits from inter-Arab conflict, it views the ameliorative steps in the region as threatening. The United States should welcome any diplomatic steps that address the problem of violence.

Finally, the United States should not allow Israel to argue that its war with the Palestinians is really an extension of the American global war on terror. Washington needs to recognize that Israeli occupation of the West Bank is a primary cause of instability in the region, not Arab terrorism.

🇲🇦🇩🇿🇬🇧 As Britain races towards the poles with a general election almost certain to topple the Conservative party in power, regional analysts will be speculating what impact, if any, a Labour party in Downing Street will have in the MENA region.

For North Africa, the apple cart is probably going to be upset, in particular, when Algeria and Morocco are put under the microscope. A Labour government in Downing Street is almost certainly not going to be a supporter of Morocco’s sovereignty claims over Western Sahara as Labour have friends in Algeria and some of its figures even openly support the Polisario. Without any doubt, within days of being in power Labour will want to make some token statement to Rabat which the latter is not going to take very well and so a recalibration of diplomatic relations will follow. To be fair, the so-called special relationship between Rabat and London wasn’t really what it was hyped to be by both sides. It was a special relationship which both sides aspired to, dreamed about and hoped for in the future.

In reality, the UK was hoping for Morocco to buy UK arms while Morocco was hoping for mega investments in Western Sahara.
