At least 90 people, including children, died on Sunday after an overcrowded fishing vessel used as a ferry sank near Mozambique’s northern coast.

Local authorities said the ship, carrying about 130 passengers on a voyage to an island near Nampula province, had difficulties leading to its sinking.

For his part, the Minister of State for Nampula Region, Jaime Neto, indicated that the technical condition of the boat was very poor, and it is not suitable for transporting passengers.

Neto explained that the motive behind the passenger flight was to escape the risk of cholera, based on misinformation about the spread of the disease.

Algeria’s civil protection services have declared a national day of mourning after ten people died in multiple drownings in a single day.

The victims died in five Algerian provinces: Tizi Ouzou, Djelfa, Blida, Setif and Annaba, due to the lack of safety conditions in water complexes and basins.

The incidents included the drowning of children in the Sablat park in Algiers, where five children lost their lives and three others are undergoing medical treatment for drowning at sea, with victims ranging in age from 8 to 20.

These accidents come in the absence of adequate swimming facilities, especially in non-interior states, so water complexes, agricultural ponds, reservoirs, and dams that are prohibited from swimming become the only solution for residents.

The tragedy highlights the need for proper swimming facilities and awareness of the dangers of swimming in unsafe places, while the incident is sparking outrage on social media, with some calling for an immediate investigation into the absence of facilities and safety officials.

Algerian authorities have arrested 7 people in connection with the tragic accident that killed 5 children, with some calling for the suspension of school trips organized on weekends.

Last Saturday’s incident at Sablat Beach was dubbed “Black Saturday” by media and social media, as the drowning incident shocked Algerians and led to calls for a review of school trips to ensure the safety of children.

Some comments on social media rejected the fact that some allow their children to join such trips, saying that the responsibility lies with families who allow their children to travel to distant areas without checking the seriousness of the organizers.

Several associations, political parties and journalists also called for revealing all the circumstances of the incident and taking strict measures to prevent its recurrence.
