Tunisian authorities have arrested a Sudanese athlete known for his martial arts training after he appeared to train irregular migrants in Sfax.

A Tunisian judicial official confirmed that the 24-year-old Sudanese athlete was arrested while trying to migrate illegally from the Tunisian coast to the nearby Italian islands.

The Sudanese athlete appeared in videos presenting combat performances in the art of “kung fu” with skillful skill, at the olive farm in the Amera area of Sfax governorate, where there are random tents for migrants.

According to Tunisian court spokesman Farid Ben Juha, the Sudanese athlete faces charges of forming an accord to illegally cross the maritime border, in addition to using communication systems to “spread terror among residents and intimidate them”.

Ben Juha added that if the charges against him are proven, he could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.

The Sudanese athlete entered Tunisia illegally across the Libyan border in 2023, following the internal armed conflict in his country.

The match assistant referee was also seriously assaulted, as his private car was vandalized during the match between Rafiq Surman and Tersana Club.

These events came against the backdrop of abuses involving the club’s president and a number of fans, who verbally and physically assaulted the referee.

The General Referees Committee appealed to the Libyan Football Association, demanding justice for the injured referee and punishment for those responsible for the attacks.

For its part, the Libyan Federation announced in response to this appeal its cooperation with the authorities to investigate the incident and take the necessary measures and vowed to punish those involved in the violence.

The quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations single-leg football championship will be held today, Thursday, at the Katameya Club Petrosport stadiums in Egypt.

At least more than 9 players were injured, some of whom were stabbed with knives, and others were beaten, resulting in injuries of varying severity, ranging from moderate to serious.

According to Ahmed Al-Arbad, Executive Director of Al-Khoms Club, the players were brutally attacked by angry fans, and the team bus was also burned in the “Bevi” area in Tajoura.

Al-Arbad explained that the injuries suffered by the players ranged from moderate to serious, while stressing that he had not received any communication from the concerned authorities, such as the Executive Office of the Libyan Football Association.
