Chaos and panic broke out in the Libyan Football League after a horrific incident occurred during the return of the Al-Khoms Club delegation from their match against the Libyan Stadium in Tripoli.

At least more than 9 players were injured, some of whom were stabbed with knives, and others were beaten, resulting in injuries of varying severity, ranging from moderate to serious.

According to Ahmed Al-Arbad, Executive Director of Al-Khoms Club, the players were brutally attacked by angry fans, and the team bus was also burned in the “Bevi” area in Tajoura.

Al-Arbad explained that the injuries suffered by the players ranged from moderate to serious, while stressing that he had not received any communication from the concerned authorities, such as the Executive Office of the Libyan Football Association.

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has warned its Libyan counterpart and the Ministry of Sports against interventions that may lead to violating the international body’s regulations, threatening to suspend the federation’s activity if violations continue.

This warning from FIFA comes a few days before the Libyan national team’s first two matches in the African continent’s qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

In its letter, which was published by the Libyan Federation on Facebook, FIFA warned the Ministry of Sports that intervention on its part may lead to the suspension of the Libyan Federation’s activities if the violations continued, stressing that the recommendations included in its correspondence must be taken into account.

FIFA said in its letter: “The Ministry of Sports’ letter to the Libyan Football Federation contains instructions regarding the organization of the Federation’s General Assembly, and it also appears to provide instructions regarding the members of the Federation’s General Assembly and their delegates participating in the regular conference, which was scheduled to be held on May 2, 2024, but “It was eventually postponed.”

The Libyan Football Association has begun preparations to hold the six-way stage to determine the champion of the Libyan Premier League competition for the 2023-2024 season in Italy.

The Federation announced this decision after a session held under the chairmanship of Abdul Hakim Al-Shalmani, where an agreement was reached with representatives of the clubs qualifying for the final stage, and the date for the start of the competitions was set on June 25, in Italian stadiums.

It was proposed to hold the competitions in Libya if the necessary support to move the matches to Italy was not available, but the Libyan government pledged to provide the required support, which led to the final announcement that the matches would be held in Italy.

It is expected that Al-Nasr, Al-Ahly Benghazi and Al-Akhdar clubs from the first group will participate in the final stage of the tournament, along with Al-Ahly Tripoli, Al-Suwaihli and Al-Madina from the second group.

The Libyan Football Association announced today, Saturday, the extension of the contract of Serbian coach, Micho, for a period of sixteen months, until the African Cup of Nations, in order to lead the team.

The extension was announced during a press conference in Italy, in the presence of Micho and the President of the Federation, Abdelhakim Al-Shalmani, who stated that Micho will lead the team until the end of the Arab Cup and the local African Cup of Nations tournaments, in addition to the World Cup qualifiers.

Al-Shalmani explained during the conference that Micho’s new contract includes specific financial details and enhanced technical arrangements with the addition of a physical trainer, a performance analyst and a translator within the technical staff.
