Eddie Chu: Not only have the police restricted the freedom of assembly, the Hong Kong Correction Service Department has also stopped all official visit by councilors, with no detail of the date of resumption and the condition for visitation. It must be noted that visits from solicitors and barristers are still allowed.

China May Retaliate Against Nokia and Ericsson by Restricting Exportation of Their China-Made Products if EU Countries Move to Ban Huawei

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) had cited a source saying that if the European Union (EU) were to follow the lead of the US and UK in barring China’s Huawei from their member states’ 5G networks, Beijing would consider retaliating against the Chinese operations of two major European telecommunication equipment makers, Nokia and Ericsson, by restricting the exportation of their products manufactured in China.  However, looking back at Beijing’s reactions in the past, this rumour was likely to be more bark than bite, more like a warning rather than real action.  China’s Ministry of Commerce did not respond to further inquiry from WSJ.

On 21st of July, WSJ cited people in the know that China’s Ministry of Commerce was weighing export control on Nokia and Ericsson, based respectively in Finland and Sweden, regarding their China-made products.  One insider added that this would be a worst-case scenario that Beijing was prepared to take up should European countries come down hard on Chinese suppliers and ban them from 5G networks.

As of now, the EU has yet to ban Huawei’s equipment, but it has released a set of 5G cybersecurity recommendations in January stating that member states could set their own restrictions on Huawei’s presence in their countries as they see fit.  The EU’s largest member state, Germany, is expected to announce its decision on barring Huawei from its 5G infrastructure in September at the earliest.

Two Years After the July 21 Yuen Long Mob Attack: Hongkongers Commemorate Key Protest Incidents Despite Heavy Police Presence

20:05 | Yuen Long West Rail Station

Members of #TinShuiWaiConnect and Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (#HKCTU) set up street booth at the West Rail Train Station to commemorate the #YuenLong721 incident.

2 years ago in 2019, white-clad mobsters stormed into the train cabinets and the platform of Yuen Long west Rail station to brutally assault black-clad civilians on their way home after a long day of pro-democracy rally.

Police-triad collusions were alleged as police's arrival at the scene was delayed. In addition to closing the police station early, uniformed police officers, patrolling nearby the train station, were sighted turning a blind eye to the assault and left the scene without rendering support to those bellowed for help.

The #YuenLong721 incident, which happened on July 21, 2019 is one of the most remembered incidents during the pro-democracy movement in 2019.

Since then, pro-democracy supporters came to the station every month to commemorate the incident, showing their defiance and strong belief in freedom and democracy.

On July 21, 2021, Lam Chun, a vocal member of Tin Shui Wai Connect, called on citizens to think of possible quests for democracy amidst Chinese tyranny as shown in the imposition of National Security Law in Hong Kong in July 2020.

Tang Kin-wah, an executive member of HKCTU mentioned another incident that took place on the same day in 2019 when Hong Kong police headshot 36 rubber bullets and countless rounds of tear gas at pro-democracy citizens demonstrated in front of the Chinese Liaison Office in Sheung Wan and Central.

Tang said, on that day, courageous Hongkongers pressed forward together, each supporting another.

He was, however, saddened to see local authorities attempted to water-down the #YuenLong721 incident by distorting some most obvious facts.

He urged Hongkongers to stand in solidarity and continue their fight for freedom in order to defend their own rights.

Moments after the booth were set up on July 21, 2021, hundreds of police officers, arrived at the scene to "remind citizens of the gathering restrictions".

The police stopped and searched passers-by, urging them to leave as quickly as they can.

#DSE Top-Scorers in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong on July 21, 2021, the result of the pre-University public exam DSE was released.

Across the city, seven students obtained the highest score 5** in seven subjects. Three of them are "super scorers" in eight subjects.

Just two days before, on July 19, the Hong Kong International Airport was filled with people, who were departing the city for the UK. It was the last day of the special immigration scheme LOTR offered by the British government.

As the immigration wave continues, the drop-out rate in schoold surges in Hong Kong under the #NationalSecurityLaw. Seemingly, staying in the city is no longer a preference for many.

The seven top-scorers have already obtained their tickets to enter local universities without a doubt. However, under these circumstances, will they leave or stay? Speaking up or keeping silence?

Indeed, five out of the seven students plan to continue their studies in Hong Kong.

One top-scorer said, "Although Hong Kong has experienced a lot of changes in these two years, it is still my root. I choose to stay. Our freedom of speech may be narrowed, but we can take charge of our thoughts."

Kodak Deletes Post by Photographer Who Called Xinjiang an ‘Orwellian Dystopia’

The American company Eastman Kodak has deleted an Instagram post featuring images of Xinjiang, a western Chinese region where the government is accused of grave human rights violations, after an online backlash from Beijing’s supporters.

The post was promoting the work of the French photographer Patrick Wack, who made several trips to Xinjiang in recent years and has collected his images into a book. The project received a lift last week when Kodak shared 10 of his images — all shot on Kodak film — with its 839,000 Instagram followers.

Canada looks on as Biden rallies other allies to counter China

The White House has confirmed that U.S. President Joe Biden plans to meet later this year with his Japanese, Australian and Indian counterparts — a four-country grouping dubbed the “Quadrilateral Security Dialogue” or QUAD.

The announcement came just days after Chinese Communist Party General-Secretary Xi Jinping marked the centenary of the party with an incendiary oratory that was short on Marxism but long on nationalist promises “to build a new type of international relations.”

This is Xi’s doctrine of “the community of the common destiny of mankind” under future People’s Republic of China (PRC) global domination, which includes making irrelevant the current institutions that promote peace, prosperity and justice, such as the United Nations, World Trade Organization, G-20 and G-7.

China and the Taliban Begin Their Romance

U.S. President Joe Biden’s announcement that U.S. troops will be gone from Afghanistan by Aug. 31 will remove the most formidable obstacle to total Taliban takeover of the country. The Taliban claim they already control as much as 85 percent of Afghan territory. In the absolute best-case scenario, the Afghan government and the Taliban might share power, but that seems increasingly like wishful thinking.

Britain to permanently deploy two warships in Asian waters

Britain said on Tuesday it would permanently deploy two warships in Asian waters after its Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier and escort ships sail to Japan in September through seas where China is vying for influence with the United States and Japan.

Plans for the high-profile visit by the carrier strike group come as London deepens security ties with Tokyo, which has expressed growing alarm in recent months over China's territorial ambitions in the region, including Taiwan.

"Following on from the strike group's inaugural deployment, the United Kingdom will permanently assign two ships in the region from later this year," Britain's defence minister, Ben Wallace, said in a joint announcement in Tokyo with his Japanese counterpart, Nobuo Kishi.

Hong Kong crackdown: Thousands flee city amid surge in terrorism charges

Early last week, Michael Mo nervously set off with just two suitcases to Hong Kong’s airport.

Fearing imminent arrest for his pro-democracy political views under Beijing’s sweeping National Security Law, the 35-year-old local politician had taken a snap decision to leave home forever and flee to London.

He had altered his hairstyle and removed his glasses to disguise his regular appearance, but he was still on alert for plainclothes police officers right up until his flight took off.

British ministers cut off funding to chip factory after sale to China

British ministers have cut off taxpayer-funded payments to Britain's biggest microchip factory after its sale to a Chinese-owned technology company, the Telegraph reported late on Tuesday.

UK Research and Investment (UKRI) has suspended grants to Newport Wafer Fab under government instructions after its sale to Nexperia, the newspaper reported.

Earlier this month, when asked whether the sale of the semiconductor producer would go ahead to Chinese-owned Nexperia, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he did not want to drive Chinese investment away from Britain because of "anti-China spirit"

13-year-old Boy in Hong Kong Persists on Remembering 7.21 #YuenLongAttack, Stopped and Searched by the Police

On July 21, 2022, some Hongkongers donned black, some brought flowers to remember the 7.21 Yuen Long Attack. In 2019, white-clad gangsters indiscriminately assaulted pro-democracy citizens, train passengers and pedestrians, as police reportedly turned a blind eye.

In 2022, those who insisted to remember included a 13-year-old boy. He recalled the day three years ago when he was still in primary school, "many white clad people launched attack that day, but only 7 of them were charged."

The boy brought with him a paper that wrote "lest we forget 7.21" and was stopped and searched by the police.

"7.21: The Unfinished Case": Video Report by #IndependentJournalists Reviews Records of #YuenLongAttack, Victims Speak Up as they Revisit the Scene

Part 1 of 3

The man walked around the Yuen Long MTR station with a tablet on his hand, which was replaying a video clip of the 7.21 attack. "It should be here .... No wait, a little further forward ... yes, this is the spot."

Galileo is one of the victims of the 7.21 Yuen Long Attack. 3 years ago, he saw former Stand News journalist Gwyneth Ho being assaulted, and rushed forward with several others to restrain the attackers. However, the attackers quickly turned on him; he was swarmed by 6 or 7 of them, and beaten with umbrellas, canes, and wooden sticks.

On the third anniversary of the attack, a group of independent journalists compiled a special video report titled "7.21: The Unfinished Case".

Watch the video here:

The group includes the award-winning former RTHK producer #BaoChoy; they interviewed several victims and witnesses of the attack, and revisited the scene of the attack at the MTR station, attempting to piece together the truth of the incident.

Interviewee: "Not a Group Fight, Only Being Assaulted"

The report strings together several scattered video segments, including live reporting by #StandNews, phone videos from citizens, security cameras from nearby shops, as well as videos by the recently-shut-down #FactWire.

The video presented several iconic moments of the night of July 21-22, 2019: men in white shirts distributing bamboo sticks from their vehicles, riot police repeatedly making way for the white shirts to leave by car, police officers patting the shoulders of the white-clad men, pro-Beijing lawmaker #JuniusHo shaking hands with the white men.

The interviewees said that there were over 200 white shirts involved that evening, but only 7 had been convicted of rioting and intentional bodily harm.

Galileo, who agreed to show his face in his interview, remarked that the nature of the 7.21 incident "was not a group fight; it was purely a case of being attacked and assaulted." He believed that there may currently be fewer than 10 people who would be willing to comment on the 7.21 incident, considering the way the government had characterized the incident as well as the law today. However, he insisted on speaking out on his own experiences and thoughts: "I stand by my principle: I say what is true."

https://youtu.be/smIWjWLYqq8

The video report also interviewed a shop owner who provided CCTV footage. "I don't want the truth to be drowned," he said. He also remarked that he seem to have been stalked because he accepted the interview, and had to check himself into a hotel in order to stay safe.

Before the camera, he shared that "the feeling of being unsafe now surrounds Hong Kong, including everyone who had spoken up, or had provided evidence, or had taken a stance contrary to the regime's."

"'The truth will eventually prevail,'" he said, almost cynically. "But when is 'eventually'? In ten years? Twenty? Thirty?" He hoped that he would live to see it. He stressed, however, that even though it seems the truth could not prevail now, the chance will be gone if he doesn't speak up.

Production Team: "Awaiting the Day when the Full Truth is Revealed"

The production team consisted of several anonymous independent journalists, including Bao Choy, who was a former RTHK producer of the Hong Kong Connection episode "7.21: Who Owns the Truth", and had been convicted by the authorities for making false statements in the process of routine investigation of records when producing the episode.

Watch "7.21: The Unfinished Case" on YouTube:
https://youtu.be/smIWjWLYqq8

The team emphasized that they did not belong to any media organization, and did not have a news platform. They thanked various independent media for their efforts in sharing the production. As independent journalists, they said, the team did not have salary or sufficient resources, but nevertheless completed the production and held to their professional principles.

They spoke of an interviewee who had been stalked for providing security camera footage, and had to live in fear of retribution. However, they had no regrets for bringing the evidence to light. Another interviewee described the process of seeking the truth was like continuously running into dead ends, but insisted on "continuing to do whatever I can."

The team saluted the interviewees: "They clearly understood that in these circumstances, very few people still dared to speak up publicly about the 7.21 attack. Yet they are still willing to be named and be interviewed on camera."

There were some among the truth-seekers who had been forced to leave the city, while others chose to stay. However, the team said, they are all waiting for the day when the full truth is revealed.

Their goal in producing this report, they said, was only to "put on record more evidence of this serious incident of assault."
