(24 Feb) Yang Xubin, a democratic activist in Guangzhou, has supported Hong Kong’s “Anti-Extradition Amendment Bill Movement” on his Twitter account. He was found guilty of “Picking quarrels and provoking trouble” and imprisoned for 9 months because he sprayed political slogan like “Freedom”,” Democracy”,” Election”, “Revolution of the time” and “Liberate GuangZhou” on the street. It is reported he confessed guilty in court.
Xiaowaves, a group formed by Liu Xiaobo’s friends which follows civil rights activists in China stated on Twitter that Yang sprayed political slogan in multiple areas in Xiaozhocun, Guangzhou last August and was arrested. Yang’s case was put onto a video court on 13 Jan. Yang confessed he was the one spraying the slogans. The indictment accused him for ignoring the law and disrupting public order.
Guangzhou Haizhu Court issued a conviction, charging Yang for spraying slogans around Xiaozhoucun in the Haizhu district of Guangzhou between 24 Aug and 26 Aug. He was charged for disrupting public order and ignorance of the law. He was sentenced to jail for 9 months until 25 May 2020.
The court confiscated his properties including a notebook with various protesting slogans, helmet and gas mask. The indictment pointed out Yang’s graffiti led to crowd gathering to watch was an act ignoring the law while also disrupting public order because of “making trouble”.
Yang Xubin was born in Jieyang, Guangdong in 1980. He graduated from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and works freelance. Before his arrest, he has posted on Twitter to show support to the “Anti-Extradition Amendment Bill Movement” and uploaded videos about the protests where he filmed in Hong Kong. His Twitter biography is “Fight for Democracy and Freedom”, and he once posted claiming “he rather die standing than live kneeling”.

Eastern Magistrates’ Court trial of Chan Yi-chun
(15 Jun) Chan’s mum gripped his arm tightly, and his girlfriend followed silently, worrying.
“As you could see from the news clips, he was severely beaten on the head. He lied down but they kept beating...” Chan’s mum frowned and mumbled, grasping her son’s arm in distress. She must have said it many times. “Yes we know, you should listen to what the lawyer has to say first”, Chan Yi-chun said to his mother. The legal team listened, and Chan himself understood that these were his mother’s concerns, not court testimony. Others understood as well and did not try to stop Chan’s mum from speaking.
“All we could do is to worry for him and support him.” As a mother, she could only worry. Not to mention that it was the third day of trial and the situation was not hopeful. In the judgement, the judge said that the police’s statement was “unequivocal”, “simple, direct”, “solid and consistent”, therefore, it is “the truth”. The defendant “repeatedly refused to listen” under the use of baton, and when faced with a “strong, forceful” man like him, the officer was bound to use “appropriate force”. “Fortunately the officer was wearing riot gear so there were no further casualties”, the judge added (a rather ironic comment).
Chan was repeatedly crushed and beaten by police with baton, yet the judge said, “The defendant was conscious enough to call out his name even though he was bleeding from the head. These actions are considered as resistance, not self-defense”. Looking at the medical report, the judge asked, “Was it the defendant who told the doctor that he was ‘hit on the head by a baton’?”. The judge continued to ask, “Why did he say this to the doctor? There is no evidence that these injuries were caused by a baton”. Chan was convicted on all three counts.
Upon hearing the sentence, Chan’s girlfriend and mother were in tears, but Chan did not cry. He was immediately remanded in custody.
He took three deep breaths, nodded at the public gallery from afar, and gazed at his mother, girlfriend and friends. He didn’t take his eyes off them.
The prison van drove past and the crowd saw him off. Before the sentencing, Chan recorded a voice message:
“After all, I fought for my freedom, although in the end I have lost it.”
“If I have decided to stay in Hong Kong, I have to accept its system and play by its rules.”
He is only a 19-year-old young man, and he has been convicted.
But at least he is a polite, truthful young man who is brave to face his future.

NBA Spokesperson: There Were Attempts to Print Hateful Messages
Many NBA players have been showing their support for the recent movements against systemic racial discrimination in the US, and the National Basketball Players Association has reached an agreement with the NBA to allow slogans supporting racial equality to be printed on the back of jerseys. However, it was discovered last Monday that the NBA official online store had restricted apparel customisations that included the text “FreeHongKong”.
The website then briefly reopened orders for personalised apparel with “FreeHongKong” and explained that there was a technical problem previously. But four days later, the customisation feature was completely removed from the website.
An NBA spokesperson confirmed to Fox News that the apparel customisation feature was temporarily removed from the website since there were “attempts to include violent, abusive and hateful messages on personalised NBA jerseys”, yet no explanation was offered on the inappropriate language in question. Republican Senator Josh Hawley accused the NBA of carrying out censorship like China and not daring to offend Beijing.
Fox News pointed out that before the “FreeHongKong” controversy, the personalised apparel feature had allowed customisations of all sorts of texts, even violent messages such as “Kill Cops”.
A Stand News reporter logged into the NBA website on Friday morning and found all personalised apparel had been taken off the shelf. The only customisable item still available was the Los Angeles Lakers bear, but the text limit had been changed from 12 characters to 11, making it impossible to print the “FreeHongKong” slogan. However, “FreeHK” was still a possible choice and the reporter was able to proceed smoothly to the shopping cart for payment.
Another official NBA online store operator, Fanatics, is also no longer offering personalised NBA apparel, but the website still offers personalised gear from NFL, MLB and other leagues. Fans could still order apparel or gear with “FreeHongKong” text, but “Kill Cops” or other such hateful texts were not accepted.
Experts have opined that the incident has shown NBA’s double standards in allowing stance that pertains to equality movements in the US but hesitating to touch on topics sensitive to China.

People around the world joined the event "Resist CCP: Global Day of Action" where protests were held on 1 October, which is also PRC's National Day.
In Toronto, Canada, thirteen organizations, including Canada-Hong Kong Link, Regional Tibetan Youth Congress of Toronto, Students for a Free Tibet Canada responded to the call.

And just last week, Beijing made changes to Hong Kong's election laws which would essentially only allow people loyal to Beijing to run for leadership.
Today, we bring you the stories of two members of the pro-democracy movement who have been watching these developments from Canada. Davin Wong, a student protest leader in Hong Kong, who's now studying law in Vancouver. And Philip, whose identity we are protecting, who sought asylum in Canada after being arrested on riot charges in Hong Kong in 2019.
