HK Cheif Executive refuses to wear face covering in press briefing while tightening COVID control measures

In a press briefing on mid-February, Hong Kong Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, insisted on not wearing a #mask during her press conference.

When reporters again asked why she wasn't wearing a face covering, she taunted that reporters should let go of this matter, and focus on COVID-control measures.

On another press conference last month, Lam had explained that she had gone mask-less because "people need to understand and feel my feeling".

Sculptor of dismantled Tiananmen statue says damage symbolic of Hong Kong struggle

The sculptor of a statue commemorating the victims of China's 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown said on Friday that its removal from a Hong Kong university was "brutal" but any damage would be symbolic of recent changes in the city under Chinese rule.

The eight-metre (26-foot) sculpture of anguished human torsos was one of the few remaining public memorials in the former British colony to remember the crackdown on pro-democracy protesters - a taboo topic in mainland China, where it cannot be publicly commemorated.

Covid-positive domestic worker, baby left to wait overnight outside Hong Kong hospital

//A domestic worker and her three-month-old baby waited overnight outside a hospital after testing positive for Covid-19, the latest incident to expose the plight of Hong Kong’s migrant workers amid the growing outbreak.//

//The woman, who goes by the pseudonym Anika, had developed a fever and a cough. Her infant was also feeling unwell.

But the hospital told them they could not wait inside, ... Anika and her three-month-old ended up spending the night outside the hospital, where she slept on a chair in a covered area.

“There were also other preliminary-positive patients there,” Antonio-Santoyo said. “Maybe the hospital did not consider that it was cold.”//

Winter Olympic Athletes Were Surprisingly Reluctant to Speak

German luger Natalie Geisenberger, who was critical of China, when asked about her view on China's human rights issues a day after earning a gold medal, said peaking out was a matter of timing. "You have to be careful when you say what and where you say it", she said.

To her self-censorship, some netizens said it is unbearable

What China is trying to show the world through this Olympics? Alain Frachon, a French columnist for Le Monde, believes that "President Xi Jinping's China has proven that it is imposing its standards of civil liberties - on Chinese nationals and foreigners. In the ideological battle, the West is not on the podium."

Advertisers and multinational enterprises have been warned that no representatives of theirs can publicly speak out on Xinjiang or Hong Kong's human rights issues, not even in a few words tweets, or they will face heavy retaliation.

Ukrainian soldier sacrificed himself to slow Russian Invasion

In an encounter with #Russian military force in #Crimea, the Ukrainians had to destroy a mined bridge in order to prevent some Russian forces from advancing out of Crimea.

Volunteered in this mission, Vitaly Skakun Volodymyrovych, a member of the Ukrainian Marine Corps went alone and had successfully blown up the bridge.

Unfortunately he did not have time to flee the scene, thus sacrificed in the bombing.

His last communication with his task force was ‘Blowing up the bridge’, followed by the bombing, and his tragic perish.

His heroic act had successfully stopped the Russian tanks from moving forward, as well as slowed down their invasion, buying the Ukrainian military more time to plan and defend Russian attacks.

The Ukrainian military reiterated at the end of their announcement that, ‘We will fight as long as we are alive!’

Revolution of Our Times Shown in Cinemas in 5 Canadian Cities

Although #RevolutionOfOurTimes" is barred from screening in Hong Kong, a Canada-based organisation took it to Canada for screening.

The award-winning documentary by Hong Kong Film director #KiwiChow is now showing in 5 Canadian cities, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria, beginning February 11.

CanMen, the group who organized the screening, said they originally planned only 4 screening sessions, but were overwhelmed by the public response as tickets were sold out in hours. After negotiating with cinemas, they added an additional 10 some screening sessions.

At Cineplex Odeon International Village in Vancouver, a small Lennon Wall was set up outside the theater for audiences to write down their feelings and responses.

The documentary took audiences back to three years ago, when the Anti-ELAB movement broke out in Hong Kong. Emotional sobbing can be heard in the theater throughout the showing.

At the end of the movie, audiences responded with thunderous applause. They sang "#GloryToHongKong," a popular protest song, and chanted "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our Times."

The documentary will also be shown in Taipei, Taiwan from February 25 onward.

Two more Tiananmen monuments removed from Hong Kong universities

Two more Hong Kong universities removed on Friday public monuments to the 1989 Tiananmen protests in Beijing, following the dismantling of a sculpture commemorating victims of the crackdown at another university this week.

The removals at Chinese University and Lingnan University in the global financial hub came as authorities have been clamping down under a national security law imposed by China.

Human rights activists say the law is being used to suppress civil society, jail democracy campaigners and curb basic freedoms, but authorities say the security laws have restored stability after mass protests in 2019.

Chinese Netizens Slam Keanu Reeves for Plan to Attend Concert by Tibet House, Call for Boycott of Matrix 4

Chinese netizens have slammed the Canadian actor #KeanuReeves for his plan to attend an online charity concert hosted by the #TibetHouse on #Mar03 US time, calling for a boycott of his new film.

Hosted annually since 1989, the concert has featured a roll call of prominent musicians including David Bowie. Proceeds from the concert go to the Tibet House, formally known as the Culture Centre of H. H. the Dalai Lama, an international nonprofit organisation dedicated to preserving, displaying and protecting traditional Tibetan culture.

Reeves is himself a musician, having been the bassist of the band Dogstar in the 90s. He is reportedly areligious but interested in Buddhism. Years ago, he starred as Prince Siddhartha in Little Buddha, a biopic about the Gautama Buddha.

Chinese netizens are upset by Reeves’ plan to attend the concert. Some denounced it as an “insult to China”, while others consider it a show of “support for breaking up Chinese territory” and called for a boycott of #TheMatrixResurrections, his latest film.

A netizen claimed that while they have been a diehard Matrix fans, they “will not contribute a penny to its box office numbers”. Others said they are happy they can “now save a few bucks”, with some telling Reeves to “stay away from politics if [he] know[s] nothing about it”.

Reeves has not responded to the criticism.
