Chan was discharged from prison in Hong Kong on yesterday (Oct 23) after being jailed for money laundering. He told the media in person that he is willing to face justice in Taiwan. At the moment, Chan has yet left Hong Kong for Taiwan.

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council expressed that they are not certain when Chan Tong-kai would turn himself in to the Taiwanese authorities. In order to facilitate the process, the Taiwan police have already set up a special point of contact to arrange Chan's potential arrival.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen stated that the Hong Kong authorities had refused to provide related evidence of the case to Taiwan. Even if Hong Kong does not press charge on the suspect, Taiwan will not give up its judicial prerogatives.

Expert Testifies in Hearing: #China likely to attack #Taiwan within five years

//China's military modernization plus US failure to build robust coalitions to counter Beijing's regional aggression could lead to a Taiwan takeover

ā€œCross-strait deterrence is arguably weaker today than at any point since the Korean War,ā€ said Oriana Skylar Mastro, a fellow at Stanford Universityā€™s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies who specializes in Chinese military policy. She was speaking at a virtual hearing Feb. 18 before the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, which was examining U.S. deterrence policies aimed at preventing a future attack on Taiwan by Beijing.

ā€œImpressive military modernization on the part of China, U.S. failure to build robust coalitions to counter Chinese regional aggression, and [Chinese President] Xi Jinpingā€™s personal ambition, all have coalesced to create a situation for Beijing in which the benefits of using force more and more are becoming so high that they outweigh the costs,ā€ she continued.

ā€œI believe the greatest threat now is that Beijing will launch a military operation to force ā€˜reunification,ā€™ in their words, irrespective of Washingtonā€™s or Taipeiā€™s policies or actions,ā€ Mastro said. She added that Chinese military leaders have told her they believe Xi will conclude that the Chinese military will have the capability to occupy and seize Taiwan in a year or two even as some Western analysts predict that it is more likely five years or more from that goal.//

Biden Criticized China's Coercive Actions in Taiwan Strait and Said its Commitment to Taiwan is Rock-Solid

Joe Biden, the President of the United States, criticized China for taking coercive actions in Taiwan Strait during East Asia Summit on Wednesday (27 October). And the actions threatened the peacefulness and stability of regions and reaffirmed that the US commitment to Taiwan is ā€œrock-solidā€.

During the summit, Biden said, ā€œWe are deeply concerned about Chinaā€™s coercion actionā€. He continued, ā€œthe US has made a commitment to Taiwan. In fact, the commitment is rock-solid and consistent across successive governments. We will continue to maintain the peacefulness and stability of Taiwan Strait regionā€.

Biden said last week that the US has the responsibility to provide Taiwan with means of self-defence under the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act. The US will defend Taiwan if China attacks them. Bidenā€™s remarks run counter to the USā€™s consistent ā€œstrategic ambiguityā€ stance on Taiwan.

China later expressed their dissatisfaction with Bidenā€™s remarks and urged Washington not to send the wrong signal to Taiwan, so as not to seriously damage Sino-US relations and the peace and stability of Taiwan Strait.

American Institute in Taiwan: Deep Concern on China Damaging Taiwan Strait's Stability

#SandraOudkirk, Director of the American Institute in Taiwan, hosted her first press conference in #Taiwan on Oct 29.

She indicated that the current peace and stability around the #IndoPacific region and the #TaiwanStrait align with the interest of the #US. But she expressed deep concern about #China's act of destabilising the Taiwan Strait. Therefore, the US will work hard to help Taiwan in maintaining sufficient self-defence capabilities.

Oudkirk did not comment on #TsaiIngwen's first confirmation on the #USmilitary training in Taiwan but reiterated that the US's support to Taiwan is rock-solid. She also did not respond on whether to increase the amount of United States Marine Corps at the #AmericanInstituteinTaiwan.

She did not make a remark on the staff number of the institute and their original groups, only saying that the organisation team is outstanding.
