Hong Kong Government Objects Taiwan's Proposal to Escort Chan Tong-kai to Taiwan

Read about the Background: https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/8925

Chan Tong-kai, who admitted killing his girlfriend in Taiwan, will be discharged from prison today (Oct 23) in Hong Kong after being jailed for money laundering.

Yesterday (Oct 22) Taiwan sent an official statement to the Hong Kong SAR government and proposed to escort Chan as a homicide case suspect to Taiwan.

The Hong Kong governmemt did not reply until a statememt was issued at HKT01:33 today (Oct 23): the Hong Kong authorities totally objected Taiwan's request.

The HKSAR Government claimed
"the authority of Taiwan has no law enforcement power in Hong Kong" and that "cross-jurisdiction law enforcement" is a "disrespect for Hong Kong's jurisdictional power"; however, it still hoped that the "Taiwan side could handle the case with sincerity and uphold justice." After all, the message emphasized by the Hong Kong government to Taiwan is to "be pragmatic, and stop complicating the issue".

Taiwan: Hong Kong Government must take full responsibility if justice could not be served

Previous development: https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/8925

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) responded to Hong Kong governmentā€™s decision: The Hong Kong authorities refused Taiwanā€™s request to escort murder suspect Chan Tong-kai to Taiwan, upon his prison discharge in Hong Kong today (Oct 23).

Deputy Minister of Taiwan's MAC, Chiu Chui-cheng, said if the suspect (Chan Tong-kai) escapes after being released from prison in Hong Kong, there is a fear of collusion or destruction of evidence. If justice of the murder case is not served, the Hong Kong government has to take full responsibility, as it has not submitted any related evidence and objected the transferral of Chan.

[Oct 23: The Discharge of Chan Tong-kai in Hong Kong]

Chan Tong-kai Said He is Willing to Face Justice in Taiwan

What happened earlier: https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/8925

At 9am yesterday (Oct 23), Chan Tong-kai was released from Ping Uk Prison in Sai Kung, Hong Kong. Chan previously admitted killing his girlfriend in Taiwan and was jailed in Hong Kong for theft. Chan told the press in person that he is willing to face justice in Taiwan.

[Editor's note: Chan's case was repeatedly cited by Carrie Lam and her adminstration to introduce the controversial extradition bill; whereas Taiwan authorities had pointed out the political agenda behind the claims made by the Hong Kong authorities, as Chan's case can otherwise be solved via official negotiation without the need to amend the existing law in Hong Kong.

According to the Taiwanese authorities, the Hong Kong Government's refusal to cooperate with Taiwan on the governmental level is a denial of Taiwan's sovereignty.]

Taiwanese Authorities unsure of when Chan Tong-kai will turn himself in, after Hong Kong Government objected Taiwan's request

The Hong Kong SAR government objected Taiwan's proposal of sending officers to Hong Kong to have Chan Tong-kai transferred as a murder case suspect to Taiwan.

Chan was discharged from prison in Hong Kong on yesterday (Oct 23) after being jailed for money laundering. He told the media in person that he is willing to face justice in Taiwan. At the moment, Chan has yet left Hong Kong for Taiwan.

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council expressed that they are not certain when Chan Tong-kai would turn himself in to the Taiwanese authorities. In order to facilitate the process, the Taiwan police have already set up a special point of contact to arrange Chan's potential arrival.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen stated that the Hong Kong authorities had refused to provide related evidence of the case to Taiwan. Even if Hong Kong does not press charge on the suspect, Taiwan will not give up its judicial prerogatives.
