Close-up: From "Five Demands" to "Hong Kong Independence". A new phase of resistance under the National Security Law

(25 May)Ever since the Wuhan pneumonia stormed the world, Hong Kong's Anti-ELAB movement was put on hold until Beijing recently took the reins to formulate "Hong Kong's National Security Law". Tens of thousands of people returned to the streets against the backdrop of teargas smoke everywhere. Having experienced nearly a year of resistance, the protesters of today appeared slightly different from before. As the National Security Law draws near, their slogans no longer stop at "Five demands". Some of them are demanding true "Hong Kong independence".

A slogan's evolution from "Five demands" to "Hong Kong independence"

With cameras in hand, Stand News journalist entered the crowds today. They realised that the [Cantonese] 8-character slogan, "Five demands, not one less" has evolved into "Hong Kong independence, the only way out". Under Hong Kong's National Security Law, the demands of Hongkongers appeared to change. Shouting "Hong Kong independence" was no longer limited to youngers. Older generations joined in.

In the past 6 months, 50-year old Guenjie (pseudonym) had participated in the movement as a Peaceful* protester. She witnessed anti-riot police beating up youngsters with batons in Mong Kok. At the time, not only she was unable to prevent it, but she also got pepper-sprayed. She admitted that when the movement began, she never wanted Hong Kong independence. The slogan she shouted was merely "Carrie Lam step down". She remarked, "Destroying the Chinese Communist Party [CCP] was unnecessary. It's just [our] faulty government. If Carrie Lam stepped down, it would've been fine. But that is not the case now. There is no other way except for independence." She still insists on taking to the streets today because her heart breaks for the youngsters. Having lived in Northern Ireland for two decades, she said of the rapidly worsening brutality, "No matter how chaotic it was (back there), they were never beaten like this." Witnessing the advance of the National Security Law, she said remorsefully, "Hongkongers originally didn't care about politics. If there is blame, then put it on our generation. While the Sino-British [Declaration] negotiations were happening, Hongkongers were occupied with making money."

Editor's Note:
* "Peaceful" in this context refers to peaceful, rational, non-violent

British Law Firm Being Sanctioned and Responded on China's Stupidity: Independent Practitioners Can Have Different Views as Clients and Colleagues

Ministry of Foreign Affairs in China announced to sanction nine personnel and four entities, including British Essex Court Chambers. The chair of the Bar Human Rights Committee and Head of Cloisters Human Rights Practice Group, Schona Jolly, described the sanctions from China are “maladroit”, as lawyers are work in the same office but are all independent and might not agree with the views of clients and colleagues. She reiterated that China should accept the independent investigation by the international society on Xinjiang human rights problems instead of engaging “the diplomatic tactics”.

Schona Jolly also indicated that according to The Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers defined by the United Nations, lawyers' professional work should not be intimidated by sanctions and should not be implicated by clients. She stated that the sanctions to the whole lawyer office from China are “maladroit” as they work at the same office but are independent and self-employed practitioners, not necessarily sharing their professional points of views with other colleagues and clients. China sanctions the whole structure (i.e. the whole office) will only reflect their misunderstanding on the British law professional operations and the independence of lawyers.

HK Government Allegedly Follows China-funded Media's Criticism to Censor "Hong Kong" "Independence" on Artwork in Public Park

In 2020, pro-China media controlled by the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government condemned the appearance of individual characters denoting "Hong Kong" and "independence" on a boat sculpture displayed at Sai Kung Waterfront Park in Hong Kong.

The sculpture is modeled after a origami boat that is made of a piece of newspaper. The words which the China-funded media criticized are, in fact, random characters that appear on the newspaper.

According to Sai Kung district councilor Leung Hin-yan on May 25, 2021, the Hong Kong government has "renovated" the paper boat and that words like "'Hong Kong" and "independence" were removed. Leung suspected that the act is a censorship based on the authorities' political motif.

China threatens to withhold vaccines, pressuring Ukraine to withdraw its support for Xinjiang investigation.

The Associated Press (AP) reports that Ukraine is pressured by China, which threaten to withhold COVID-19 vaccines from exported there, to withdraw from a statement by the UN Human Rights Council on sending independent observers to Xinjiang to investigate human rights issue. China welcomes the decision and said it reflects the spirit of independence.

Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations issued a statement at the UN Human Rights Council last Tuesday (22 June) on behalf of more than 40 countries, including Ukraine, urging China to allow immediate access for independent observers to Xinjiang. China warned that it would block at least 500,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines shipment to Ukraine unless it pulled out from the statement, according to the Associated Press. Ukraine withdrew from the statement on Thursday, and AP received written response from China saying that its “provision of vaccines and anti-epidemic materials to other countries is not meant to gain benefits from other countries and there isn’t any geopolitical purpose nor any political conditions attached.”

Biden Criticized China's Coercive Actions in Taiwan Strait and Said its Commitment to Taiwan is Rock-Solid

Joe Biden, the President of the United States, criticized China for taking coercive actions in Taiwan Strait during East Asia Summit on Wednesday (27 October). And the actions threatened the peacefulness and stability of regions and reaffirmed that the US commitment to Taiwan is “rock-solid”.

During the summit, Biden said, “We are deeply concerned about China’s coercion action”. He continued, “the US has made a commitment to Taiwan. In fact, the commitment is rock-solid and consistent across successive governments. We will continue to maintain the peacefulness and stability of Taiwan Strait region”.

Biden said last week that the US has the responsibility to provide Taiwan with means of self-defence under the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act. The US will defend Taiwan if China attacks them. Biden’s remarks run counter to the US’s consistent “strategic ambiguity” stance on Taiwan.

China later expressed their dissatisfaction with Biden’s remarks and urged Washington not to send the wrong signal to Taiwan, so as not to seriously damage Sino-US relations and the peace and stability of Taiwan Strait.
