#JPAC calls for Japanese government to enact legislation for Human Rights #sanction

An inter-parliamentary group, Japan Parliamentary Alliance on China (JPAC) issued a statement on March 18, 2021 in which it condemned the China's General Assembly of the People's Congress for forcing changes to the electoral system in Hong Kong and charging 47 democrats with National Security breaches.

The alliance urged the Japanese Government to enact Human Rights Violations Sanctions Act as soon as possible and offer protection for Hongkongers facing oppression through immigration means.

The Alliance criticized the Chinese Communist Party’s (#CCP) amendments of Hong Kong’s electoral system as an act that deprives the democrat’s right to vote, aiming to weaken the development of democracy in Hong Kong.

JPAC further denounced that the CCP has blatantly violated the principle of One Country Two Systems as promised in the Sino-British Joint Declaration .

The statement also mentioned the Hong Kong authorities' arrest of 47 democrats for charges of “conspiracy to subverting state power”. It also reiterated that almost all known democratic political figures in Hong Kong have been arrested, jailed or forced to exile.

The JPAC strongly protested the arrests and called for the early release of the arrested persons.

Over 100 lawmakers around the world condemn HK government's cruel treatment of pro-democracy activists

#AndyLi, one of the 12 Hong Kong pro-democracy activists imprisoned in China, was transferred back to Hong Kong on Mar 22, 2021 after serving his sentence in China; however Li’s family has been unable to reach him for multiple days.

On Apr 2, 2021, the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (#IPAC) issued a statement criticizing the Hong Kong government’s cruel and inhumane treatment towards Li and his family, and called for the release of Li and all pro-democracy activists that are detained unfairly.

Signatories of the statement involve national lawmakers from the UK, US, Canada, Japan, and different European countries, as well as IPAC’s advisors. The statement mentioned that, since Li’s transfer to Hong Kong after serving his 7-month sentence in Shenzhen, Li has been held in a single cell in a psychiatric facility without being able to get in touch with his family. The statement described Li’s treatment as “cruel, inhumane and shocking”.

Li’s case was also described as an “emblematic of the Chinese Government’s ruthless crackdown on Hong Kong’s way of life, and disregard for the international treaties designed to protect it.”. The signatories pledged to make urgent representation to their respective governments, and demanded Hong Kong government to release Li and all activists that are being detained unjustly.

South Korean Netizens Encourage Hongkongers For "A Better Tomorrow" in the Fight For Freedom

On June 3, 2016, the Korean Pops Orchestra performed the theme song of a 1987-Hong Kong movie A Better Tomorrow II (英雄本色2) at Gyeonggi Arts Center Grand Theater in South Korea.

The theme song was entitled "Running Toward the Days of Future" (奔向未來日子) and was composed by Hong Kong iconic musician Joseph Koo (顧嘉煇).

Together with the movie directed by John Woo, the song has been very popular in South Korea during the 1980s and the 1990s.

In a comment published in January 2021, a netizen explained the sentiment shared by the South Korean population towards this Hong Kong movie:

"Probably, Hongkonger do not understand the reason for popularity of this title song. All most all Korean was depressed due to the military junta in the late 1980 and early 1990. The miserable situation could be found from movies, Tax Driver, 1987 etc.

The counterpart of heroes, Leslie Cheung, Donald Chow Aman Chow and Ti Lung, really really touched the heart of Korean - we can change the life. Now, we are likely to say that... you can change your world as we did."

Other netizens concurred and left words of support for Hongkongers to fight for democracy and freedom in today's context.

#HongKongWatch calls for establishment of a #UN Special Envoy for Hong Kong

Hong Kong Watch, a British non-government organization focusing on Hong Kong issues, released a statement on May 18, 2021, calling on the United Nations (UN) to form a special envoy to Hong Kong, in order to monitor the deteriorating human rights situation, as well as to coordinate an international response.

Lord Patten of Barnes, the last Governor of Hong Kong, adds:

“The establishment of an international contact group to coordinate a global response would be a positive way forward. Moreover, the creation of a UN special envoy for Hong Kong would contribute both to monitoring human rights and encouraging dialogue and reconciliation. Many UN member states would see it as a constructive proposal worthy of support.”

#ReportersWithoutBorders protests #AppleDaily closure at Chinese embassies in Paris and Berlin

The press freedom advocacy group Reporters Without Borders (#RSF) marched through the streets of Paris and Berlin on June 25, 2021.

They protested the closure of the Hong Kong's pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily, after Hong Kong's Beijing-backed authorities froze the paper's assets and arrested several executives.

The NGO said on their website that they held "funeral-style processions" to denounce the "killing" of Apple Daily by the Hong Kong government, and to "raise alarm of the threats" posed by the Beijing regime to press freedom globally.

In Paris, RSF placed a coffin and funeral flowers for the Hong Kong paper in front of the #ChineseEmbassy. At the same time, they buried copies of the newspaper in front of the embassy in Berlin.

RSF Secretary-General Christophe Deloire said, "today's funeral is for Apple Daily, but tomorrow's may be for press freedom in China. It's time for the international community to act in line with their own values and obligations and defend what's left of the ,free press in Hong Kong before China's model of information control claims another victim."

10 Cities in #UK Mourn the Shutdown of Apple Daily in Hong Kong

#AppleDaily, a top-selling pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong, was forced to cease operation on June 24, 2021.

On June 27, HongKongers in the UK organised assemblies in different cities to mourn the "death" of the newspaper.

Participating cities included London, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Reading, Nottingham, Sutton, Sheffield, Kent, and Leeds.

Jeff, an former employee of Apple Daily distributed his custom-made newspaper.

Wong, an ex-vice director of Apple Daily gave his opinion about the assembly in his interview with the Stand News. He said, "We welcome everyone to participate and remember Apple Daily".

He also mentioned that people were discussing to organise Apple Daily in the UK and he hss been a part of the discussion.

He believes the intention of the shutdown is to protect the safety of the employees, and the possibility of publishing Apple Daily overseas would be very risky to the employees in Hong Kong.

He pointed out that it could be a reason for the court to deny a bail for its employees.

He said he had also chatted with Jeff, who distributed his own version of 'Apple Daily' for the gathering.

Jeff promised he will not act on behalf of Apple Daily. Jeff also told Stand News that he would not dare to represent Apple Daily as he is not qualified to do so, but he's just doing what he thinks he should do.

#Hongkongers in #UK Initiate #Flashmob Activity to Raise Awareness of HK Situation

In response to the forced shutdown of #AppleDaily on June 24, 2021, an UK-based Hongkongers' association initiated a flash-mob activity in the Waterloo train station on July 4, 2021.

Around 30 people displayed and read a DIY edition of the Apple Daily newspaper. The edition was also distributed on the street afterwards, with a goal to draw public attention to Hong Kong's deteriorating education.

Among the participants, there was a 12-year-old boy who has been injured but insisted on helping, despite the need of his walking sticks.

The boy arrived in London from Hong Kong with her mother in February. He said, "there is no more freedom in Hong Kong". He wished to support the pro-democracy newspaper.
