Hong Kong Government's Discriminative Treatment: Open Borders with China; Ban Entry of Passengers from South Korea

Many people in Hong Kong asked, "What about China?".

On February 24, the Hong Kong government announced its policy of prohibiting passengers from South Korea, including those who have travelled to South Korea in the past 14 days, from entering Hong Kong starting from 6 am on February 25.

Until then, the Hong Kong-China borders remain open, despite the local population's vocal demands to have it closed.

As of February 24, there have been 833 cases of Wuhan pneumonia in South Korea and nearly 77,000 cases reported in China.

Meanwhile, China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism told PRC nationals not to go to the United States for the "unfair treatment" they would receive.

Students' Union of University of Hong Kong: "Hongkongers, We Shall Give Our Lives to Freedom"

The University of Hong Kong Students' Union released a frontpage statement on #AppleDaily on #Aug14. Conveying Hongkongers' determination to pursue freedom, the open letter quoted #WinstonChurchil 's speech in the #WWI and #HannahArendt 's works as well as the struggles for democracy in #Taiwan and #SouthKorea. The letter goes:

“Students were arrested, a newspaper office was raided, election was turned into ‘mere figurehead’, and a professor was dismissed. All of these are merely the prologue to a long gloomy night. It seems that the future of this city can only get ever duller. We might be weak confronting the totalitarian party-state, but we are not alone.

We have the free world walking with us."

The message is clear: "Hongkongers, We Shall Give Our Lives to Freedom"; and

“Through blood, toil, tears and sweat, we will strive on."

BTS Supporters Counterattack after Chinese Netizens Sniped BTS,
Zhao Lijian Tried to Calm them Down along with the Deletion of the Provocative Report by Global Times

South Korean K-pop boy band BangTan Sonyeondan (BTS) has gained an award for their efforts to promote South Korea-US relations. However, their award-winning speech, relevant to the Korean War, caused dissatisfaction among Chinese netizens and being sniped, such as claiming not to buy the endorsed products. BTS supporters, on the other hand, fought back on social networking sites. A netizen said, “thanks to the 50 Cent Army and the Little Pink, Korea has become anti-communist now!" Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian then showed kindness, saying that "promoting friendship should be our (China and Korea) common pursuit". The Global Times also deleted its reports criticizing BTS. The Director of the Military Affairs Department of South Korea, Moo Jung-woo, responded yesterday (13 October) that the accusations made by Chinese netizens were "uncomfortable." The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea also stated that it would remain concerned about the situation.

Earlier, BTS gained the “James A. Van Fleet Award”. A member mentioned in their speeches that "we will always remember the painful history of our two countries and the countless sacrifices made by men and women". As a result, the Chinese netizens criticized BTS for not respecting the Chinese martyrs and not understanding the history of the anti-American war effort.

Global Times published a report on Monday (12 October), stating that "we cannot tolerate anything that involves our national dignity”. Chinese netizens urged not to purchase any BTS-endorsed product. Subsequently, a South Korean company Samsung removed the BTS-endorsed products from its Chinese online stores, and a manufacturer Hyundai and a sports brand FILA also removed BTS-relevant posts from their Chinese social media pages.

Hanbok or Hanfu? Chinese Dress Up Game Sparks Debate, South Korean Professor Demands Apology from Developer

Shining Nikki, a dress up game by the Chinese developer Papergames, has caused controversy earlier for launching a Korean-style outfit named “Gunyun Chonghua”. The outfit drew criticism from a number of Chinese players, who claimed it was not Korean hanbok but hanfu from the Ming dynasty, while some Korean players insisted that it is hanbok. As the row intensified, the developer closed its newly opened server in Korea while slamming some of its Korean players for having “insulted China” and stepped over the line. The shutdown did not put an end to the quarrel. According to the Yonhap News Agency, Seo Kyung-duk, a professor at South Korea’s Sungshin Women’s University, has written to Papergames in protest of the way it handled the incident and demanded that it apologize to South Korean netizens.

Chinese Investors in South Korean listings Are Repeatedly Delisted; Fictitious mask Contracts Cost Korean Investors $2.7 billion

In recent years Chinese capital has been aggressively venturing outside, seeking to list on overseas financial markets. South Korea Stock Exchange also continued receiving Chinese capital application for listing and backdoor listing through the acquisition of South Korean companies recently. However, many of the alleged financial statuses are unclear that at least 12 Chinese stocks have been previously delisted in South Korea, accounting for 85% of the delisted foreign stocks. An analysis by South Korea Daishin Securities indicated that Chinese companies tend to exaggerate their marketing goal and often violate their commitments to corporate investment and management. They described Chinese capitals as unreliable and called on investors to be cautious.

Mask Agreement is “made out of nothing”, stock price drops 50% after being revealed

LIS, a manufacturer of laser supplies and mask production lines, received a stake in China’s Jiangsu Yawei Machine in September last year. The latter currently holds 21.84% of the shares and becomes the largest shareholder of LIS. The company unilaterally announced in the middle of this month that it had reached a USD 900 million (approximately HKD 7 billion) mask supply contract with the paper manufacturer Double A, but Double A denied the news the next day. LIS immediately announced the cancellation of the agreement and its stock price plummeted from 13,550 won to 6,050 won in less than two trading days, a decline of more than 55%. LIS apologised to shareholders for the incident and admitted that it had not signed an agreement with Double A.

US and allies to build 'China-free' tech supply chain

U.S. President Joe Biden is set to sign an executive order as early as this month to accelerate efforts to build supply chains for chips and other strategically significant products that are less reliant on China, in partnership with the likes of Taiwan, Japan and South Korea.

The document will order the development of a national supply chain strategy, and is expected to call for recommendations for supply networks that are less vulnerable to disruptions such as disasters and sanctions by unfriendly countries. Measures will focus on semiconductors, electric-vehicle batteries, rare-earth metals and medical products, according to a draft obtained by Nikkei.

South Korean Netizens Encourage Hongkongers For "A Better Tomorrow" in the Fight For Freedom

On June 3, 2016, the Korean Pops Orchestra performed the theme song of a 1987-Hong Kong movie A Better Tomorrow II (英雄本色2) at Gyeonggi Arts Center Grand Theater in South Korea.

The theme song was entitled "Running Toward the Days of Future" (奔向未來日子) and was composed by Hong Kong iconic musician Joseph Koo (顧嘉煇).

Together with the movie directed by John Woo, the song has been very popular in South Korea during the 1980s and the 1990s.

In a comment published in January 2021, a netizen explained the sentiment shared by the South Korean population towards this Hong Kong movie:

"Probably, Hongkonger do not understand the reason for popularity of this title song. All most all Korean was depressed due to the military junta in the late 1980 and early 1990. The miserable situation could be found from movies, Tax Driver, 1987 etc.

The counterpart of heroes, Leslie Cheung, Donald Chow Aman Chow and Ti Lung, really really touched the heart of Korean - we can change the life. Now, we are likely to say that... you can change your world as we did."

Other netizens concurred and left words of support for Hongkongers to fight for democracy and freedom in today's context.

How China broke the Asian model

“What do you think is unique about the China model?” That was the question posed to me by a television reporter, last time I was in Beijing. My answer was that I don’t think there was a specific Chinese economic model.

There is an east Asian development model of rapid, export-driven industrialisation that was pioneered by Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. What China did was to pursue the same model — at scale. I added that China’s one real innovation was that the country had not liberalised politically as it had grown richer. This sets China apart from the South Koreans and Taiwanese.

Former US admiral says China 'their own worst enemy' as tensions rise in South China Sea

The Olympics, the fall of Kabul and the damage wrought by Delta have all occupied the world's focus in the past few months.

But in the waters to Australia's north, foreign navies have been gathering and critical diplomatic deals have been done.
All to ensure China does not control the South China Sea through direct force or by intimidation.

"I think that it behooves all of us who are like-minded countries, who support the idea of a free and open Indo-Pacific," former US Indo-Pacific Commander and former US ambassador to South Korea, retired Admiral Harry Harris, told 7.30.

South Koreans Now Dislike China More Than They Dislike Japan

The list of election issues set to define South Korea’s presidential race next year is long. The runaway housing prices, the pandemic, North Korea and gender inequality are a start. But an unlikely addition has also emerged in recent weeks: China.

South Korea’s decision to let the American military deploy a powerful antimissile radar system on its soil in 2017 has been the subject of frequent criticism from China. And last month, a presidential hopeful, Yoon Seok-youl, told the country to stop complaining, unless it wanted to remove its own radar systems near the Korean Peninsula.

Documentary About Hong Kong Pro-democracy Activists Wins Best Cinematography Award in #LibertyMovieFestival in #SouthKorea

#BlackBauhinia, a documentary featuring Hong Kong pro-democracy activists and social movements in Hong Kong since 2016, won the Best Cinematography Award at the Liberty Movie Festival in South Korea on November 24, 2021.

The film was directed by #MaltePhilippKaeding, a lecturer in international politics at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom. Now-exiled Ray Toi-yeung Wong and now-jailed Edward Tin-kei Leung, who were representative localists and the founders of #HongKongIndigenous, were among those interviewed by the director.

The documentary also shows footages of the Prince Edward Station Attack by the Hong Kong Police on August 31, 2019, where the police assaulted train passengers indiscriminately.

In the trailer, pro-democracy activist Edward Leung talked about his utopia before going to jail -- a Hong Kong that is free and enjoys automnomy.

#SouthKorea’s Intelligence Agency Has Joined NATO’s Cyber Defense Unit; #China Isn’t Happy

//On Thursday, May 5, 2022, South Korea’s spy agency became the first in Asia to join #NATO’s Cyber Defense Group in a move that risks inflaming tensions with regional superpower China.

In response, #HuXiJin, the strident editor of Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) mouthpiece The #GlobalTimes, tweeted that the move was an affront to Beijing and even lays the groundwork for war in Asia. “If South Korea takes a path of turning hostile against its neighbors, the end of this path could be a #Ukraine,” he wrote.

Despite hosting some of the world’s top tech companies, like #LG and #Samsung, South Korea has been a surprising laggard regarding cybercrime and only launched a National Cybersecurity Strategy under the #MoonJaeIn administration in 2018.

This is despite South Korea being the principle target of increasingly frequent cyberattacks from across the DMZ. A crack squad of 6,800 North Korean agents are engaged in fraud, blackmail and online gambling that together generate some $860 million annually, according to the Korea Institute of Liberal Democracy in Seoul. Many attacks originate from inside China.//
