On June 4, 2021, the annual candlelight vigil in Hong Kong was banned by the policd on this 32nd anniversary of Tiananmen Massacre. Despite this, many Hong Kong artists and performers held memorials in their own ways, keeping the memories of the truth alive.

"June 4 Theatre", a stage performance group that has been commemorating the massacre for the past 12 year, was unable to find a performance venue. Instead, they changed this year's live show to an online script reading performance.

Producer Lit Ming-wai is well aware of the white terror every Hongkonger is facing: "The scariest is that they aren't telling you what law you broke; instead they ask you, 'what do you think you did wrong?' They make us constantly question ourselves: can I do this? Is that allowed? It's no longer a thin red line; it's a whole area, a vast, red sea."

Still, she says she will treasure the freedom of speech and creativity. "We're not doing anything illegal. I hope we can keep on."

Although the Hong Kong Police banned the annual candlelight vigil in commemoration of the 1989 June 4th Tiananmen Massacre for the second year in 2021, Hongkongers found different ways to mourn the casaulties of the pro-democracy movement for the 32nd year.

A performance artist in Hong Kong hid 89 political cartoons with June 4-related images inside books at three independent bookstores across the city, waiting to be found by readers.

The unorthodox art display is titled "123570 - Hide and Seek" -- the name references the numbers that seem to be banned from public speech in China for 32 years, and now Hong Kong also.

The artist says that he wants Hongkongers to go searching, "and spread the habit of seeking out the truth."

Hong Kong Artist Invites the Public to Fill in the Blanks in "6:4" Ratio

Although Hong Kong Police banned the annual candlelight vigil on this 32nd anniversary of Tiananmen Massacre, the cordons cannot put out the flames of remembrance. Many artists and performers held memorials in their own ways, keeping the memories of the truth alive.

Hong Kong Artist Chan Ka-Hing designed an all-white t-shirt with no graphic, but only a flat, black rectangle -- with sides in the ratio of 6:4.

"Determining what message and memories the shirt conveys is left as an exercise to the observer," Chan reflected on the motif of his work.

Chan had been making art work of similar minimalistic style for the past two years on June 4. He aims to make it easier for the public to participate.

"Everybody can try it out, and do it on their own. Eventually, that idea or concept will become a connection for all of us," Chan said.

Political cartoonist Wong Chiu-tat created an image of a burning candle, and made it available for public to use as a phone background image.

"Every time you turn it on, you light a candle," he explains the message of the art.

"In the times we're living in now, this is even more meaningful: we're bringing light into darkness."

Wong scoffs at the Hong Kong government's aggressive crackdown on the #VictoriaPark vigil, "Our candlelight had never been in Victoria park; it's in each of our hearts. No one can take it away."

On June 4, 2022, more than 200 people gather outside the Chinese Embassy in London for a candlelight vigil in remembrance of the victims of the #TiananmenMassacre back in 1989.

#IsaacCheng Ka-Long, the former Vice-Chairperson of #Demosisto, and #YauManChun, a former Shatin District Councillor, were the moderated the event. Speakers representing the #UK, #HongKong, #Tibet and #EastTurkestan took turn to speak. The pre-recorded speech of #ZhangXianLing, one of the "#TiananmenMothers", were played after a minute of silence was observed.

Zhang Xianling's son was massacred at Beijing's Tiananmen Square on June 4 1989. Her son was 19 years old when killed. Zhang sent blessing to Hongkongers. Despite the suppression of demonstration and commemorative events in Hong Kong, Zhang encouraged the people of Hong Kong not to give up.

#BenedictRoger, the founder of #HongKongWatch, brought a yellow umbrella to the event, saying the umbrella were only used in rainy weather but it also symbolised the sovereignty and the power of the people who suffer suppression. He hopes people would see the UK as a shelter.

#LeeWingTat, a former legislator from Hong Kong's pro-democracy camp, also gave a speech, urging people not to give up. Under the National Security Law (#NSL) and other regulations, he foresaw the arrival of more and more Hong Kong immigrants to the UK. He encouraged those who arrived early to help others to settle and hoped to spread the situation in Hong Kong to the world.

#TserinPassang, a British-born Tibetan talked about how his parents went in exiled due to the high-pressure suppression in Tibel such as re-education camps and forced labour. He said that over hundred Tibetans conducted self-immolation to express their discontent, but the suppression by Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) regime does not cease. He expressed his will to go to his homeland hopefully in a not so distant future.

After that, a representative from East Turkestan spoke on the genocid and the need to raise people's awareness on all humanitarian crises.

Although it is no longer possible to continue the tradition of holding an annual candlelight vigil at Hong Kong's #VictoriaPark, the commemorarive event is carried out overseas and is joined by not just Hongkongers.

The assembly in London ended with three songs: "The Flower of Freedom" (自由花), "The Internationale", and "Glory to Hong Kong". The participants chanted pro-democracy slogans to voice their demands outside the Chinese Embassy.

// #Australia has accused the pilot of a Chinese fighter jet of carrying out a dangerous manoeuvre near one of its aircraft over the South China Sea.

It says the Chinese aircraft released flares and cut in front of the Australian surveillance plane.

The Chinese jet then released "chaff" - an anti-radar device which includes small pieces of aluminium which entered the Australian plane's engine.

Beijing claims most of the region as its own territory.

But the US, neighbouring countries and others, including Australia, dispute its claim.

In February, Australia accused a Chinese navy ship of shining a military grade laser towards one of its warplanes over the Arafura Sea off northern Australia.

In 2022, the June 4 candlelight vigil in Taiwan drew 2000 attendees, reaching a 10-year high.

Tsang Chi-ho, former host of RTHK's satire show Headliners, was in attendance. The Hong Kong media personality said that the vigil felt both sad and dreamy: "For a moment, I felt like I was in Victoria Park."

Lam Wing-kee, owner of Causeway Bay Books in Taipei, said that there was a lot more people this year. "A lot of Hongkongers came over [to Taiwan]; half the people here are Hongkongers."

The vigil's organizer is Zeng Jianyuan, president of the New School for Democracy Association.

Speaking to Chaser News, he said that they had prepared 1000 electronic candles, and they were all handed out that evening. "So at least 1000 people attending, 2000 at the peak. It should be the biggest turnout in the last dozen years or so."

He said that during Ma Ying-jeou's presidency, the Kuomintang had cancelled Taiwan's June 4 vigil. Since then, the vigil at Taipei's Liberty Square was revived thanks to the efforts of Hongkongers.

"Early on, it was Hong Kong students; now there's huge numbers of Hongkongers, as well as artists and scholars from Hong Kong. Their participation here in Taiwan built up the whole event. In the past few years, after the universal suffrage movement and #AntiELAB protests, a lot of Hongkongers came to Taiwan. This is why today's theme is very clear. It's about Hong Kong."

"I think today's event is successful," he said of the candlelight vigil, "but now that Taiwan is hosting it alone, it also makes me feel a little sad."
