Officer, they must have committed the robbery when we were on vacation.

Officer, they must have committed the burglary when we were on vacation.

#common_mistakes

🔵Examples:
👇🏻👇🏻
📌After she was robbed at gunpoint, Mary hated going out alone at night.

📌I can’t imagine how we were burglarized the day after Scam Security Systems came and installed our alarm.

📌The threat of highway robbery made a lot of carriage travelers nervous.

📌He took up burglary just so he could wear a black cat suit and climb up the side of buildings at night.

Of all the movies, that one seems less deserving of the award.

Of all the movies, that one seems least deserving of the award.

📌You know you’re in trouble when the lobster stuffed with caviar is the least expensive thing on the menu.

📌I like you less than I did yesterday.

📌Nothing she could say would make me the least bit interested in going back to her.

Either Tom or Henry has lost the book.

📌Either an apple or a banana is in his lunch bag every day.

📌Either Carrie or Maria has been baby-sitting for them.

📌Either the O’Malley’s or the Smiths have the best garden each year.

📌Either Diane or her parents are going to pay the bill.

📌Either the two cats or the dog is going to have to go.

at the beginning of something
at the end of something

و

In the beginning
In the end

at the beginning of something
at the end of something

There's a short poem at the beginning of every chapter.

What would she find at the end of her journey?

In the beginning
In the end

What did you decide in the end?

In the beginning I found the course very difficult.

❇️To recap, For + Gerund tends to emphasize the general process, preparation or outcome of a task. It's about the bigger picture or a longer-term goal. The action in the gerund form becomes a bit more "noun-like," representing an activity or a process rather than a specific action. Does that make sense?

📌Meanwhile, To + Infinitive often focuses on a specific, immediate action or goal. It's more about what you need to do right now or in a particular situation to achieve something, as opposed to the overall outcome or process.

😿To be honest, this is hard for teachers and students to grasp so you’re not alone if you find this challenging to understand or even to teach.

👂I often hear students saying
"I looked for the meaning online." which isn't quite right. Here's why.

LOOK FOR vs LOOK UP vs LOOK INTO

👀When you "look for" something, you are actively searching for a specific object, item, or information that you need or want to find.

• I need to look for my keys; I can't find them anywhere.
• Can you help me look for my book? I misplaced it.
• She's looking for a new job because she's unhappy with her current one.

🕵When you "look up" something, you are using resources like books, websites (google mostly), dictionaries, or other references to find specific information or details about a particular topic or question.

• I need to look up the definition of this word in the dictionary.
• If you're planning a trip, you should look up information about the best places to visit.
• Can you look up the recipe for chocolate chip cookies online?

🕵‍♂When you "look into" something, you are investigating or examining a situation, problem, or matter in more detail. This phrase implies a deeper level of research or analysis.

• Bear with me while I look into it for you.
• The detective promised to look into the mysterious disappearance of the valuable painting.
• We should look into the option of expanding our business to other countries.

❇️ So, just to recap, "look for" involves a mostly physical search, "look up" involves research or information gathering, and "look into" involves a deeper investigation.

Is that crystal clear?
