During the first COVID lockdown, I found myself stuck in Palestine for about eight months, unable to return to UK. Since 2012, I had not spent that much time in my family home in Jenin in the northern of the West Bank. The experience was hard, bittersweet, healing, and nostalgic. Wandering around flea markets and familiar old shops, I rediscovered Tariq Cassettes, a little music shop that was popular when I was growing up. It was right next to my school, so after the bell rang, we used to wait in line to spend our pocket money and buy new tapes for five shekels. The man who ran it was my grandmother’s neighbor, so I knew his face well. I saw that the shop was shuttered, so I knocked on the owner’s door and asked whether he still had any tapes for sale.

🇵🇸 Palestinian storytellers bring joy to Gaza's children amid war

Hundreds of thousands of children in Gaza are experiencing psychological #trauma as a result of Israeli attacks. To ease their suffering, a group of traditional Palestinian #storytellers has organised musical entertainment for young people at a school in #KhanYounis, in southern Gaza.

🇵🇸 Roya Hassouna, a displaced Palestinian woman, plays the oud for children at a camp in Rafah, creating a musical circle in a bid to support their mental health and to block out the sound of war planes amid Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza.

According to #Unicef, nearly a million Palestinian #children in Gaza have been forcibly displaced since the beginning of the war.

Majazz Project/Palestine sound archive and @discostan are honored to partner with Palestinian resistance singer Zeinab Shaath to reissue a piece of Palestinian sonic history.

More than 50 years ago in Beirut, teenager Zeinab Shaath recorded a set of revolutionary folk music — the first English-language songs to lift up the Palestinian cause to the wider world. Inspired by Vietnam-era protest music from Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, “The Urgent Call of Palestine’’ record was intended to share the stories and messages of Palestinian resistance to an international audience.
