Next-level learning approach: using MRI to peek into baby brains to improve CV
MRI Scanning 17 babies for 26 hours to see how face-recognizing brain regions mature. When just 4-6 months, babies prefer to look at faces & socially relevant things. This means face recognition is learned via evolution: data-hungry & sample-inefficient.

Organization of high-level visual cortex in human infants
Nature Communications - Adult visual cortex is organized into regions that respond to categories such as faces and scenes, but it is unclear if this depends on experience. Here, authors measured...
Speech synthesis from neural decoding of spoken sentences
Researchers tapped the brains of five epilepsy patients who had been implanted with electrodes to map the source of seizures, according to a paper published by #Nature. During a lull in the procedure, they had the patients read English-language texts aloud. They recorded the fluctuating voltage as the brain controlled the muscles involved in speaking. Later, they fed the voltage measurements into a synthesizer.

Speech synthesis from neural decoding of spoken sentences
Nature - A neural decoder uses kinematic and sound representations encoded in human cortical activity to synthesize audible sentences, which are readily identified and transcribed by listeners.
ββEnd-to-end lung cancer screening with three-dimensional deep learning on low-dose chest computed tomography
Researchers from #GoogleAi and #Stanford published work today in #Nature that shows great potential to use machine learning to help catch more lung cancer cases earlier and increase survival likelihood.

ββπ₯DeepMindβs AlphaStar beats top human players at strategy game StarCraft II
AlphaStar by Googleβs DeepMind can now play StarCraft 2 so well that it places in the 99.8 percentile on the European server. In other words, way better than even great human players, achieving performance similar to gods of StarCraft.
Solution basically combines reinforcement learning with a quality-diversity algorithm, which is similar to an evolutionary algorithm.
Whatβs difficult about StarCraft and how is it different to recent #Go and #Chess AI solutions: even finding winning strategy (StarCraft is famouse to closeness to rock-scissors-paper, not-so-transitive game design, as chess and go), is not enough to win, since the result depends on execution on different macro and micro levels at different timescales.
How that is applicable in real world: basically, it is running logistics, manufacture, research with complex operations and different units.
Why this matters: it brings AI one step closer to running real business.
