Recent reports indicate that Sudan is facing the risk of a famine that may be the most severe in recent decades, as armed conflict continues and prevents the arrival of necessary humanitarian aid.

A report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification Review Committee indicated the presence of famine in Zamzam camp in North Darfur, which is a serious indication of the deterioration of the situation, as warring factions obstruct the arrival of food and aid, making the situation more complex and dangerous.

Food was distributed in Omdurman to residents and displaced persons in an attempt to alleviate the severity of the crisis that has entered its second year, and according to “Newsweek”, about five million people are approaching the brink of famine due to the deterioration of the security and humanitarian conditions.

An artillery bombardment by the Rapid Support Forces in El Fasher, North Darfur, western Sudan, killed 23 people and injured 60 others, according to the Coordination of the Resistance Committees of El Fasher.

The coordination described the bombardment as deliberate, as it came at a time when the city is witnessing relative stability in the face of ongoing unrest in the region.

El Fasher, which is considered a major humanitarian center for refugees in Darfur, faces ongoing threats of famine as a result of the repercussions of the armed conflict that broke out in April 2023 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.

The United Nations described the recent events as a “worrying” shift, calling for an end to the siege imposed on the city.

The European Union, France and Britain have condemned the statements made by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich during a seminar on the future of the Gaza Strip.

The statements came in the context of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas for ten months, where Smotrich stated that “letting the people of the Gaza Strip die of hunger” might be “morally justified” in order to release prisoners held in the Strip.

The European Union described Smotrich’s statements as “absolutely shameful,” noting that “starving civilians to death cannot be justified.”

The union stressed in its statement that it expects the Israeli government to clearly distance itself from these statements.

For its part, France expressed its “deep dismay” at the statements, which it considered “scandalous,” calling on the Israeli government to strongly condemn them.

Since the outbreak of war in Sudan on April 15, 2023, serious environmental consequences have emerged that threaten the population and the climate.

A recent study conducted by the Moatasem Nimr Center for Environmental Culture revealed the devastating effects of war on the environment, including water, air and soil pollution as a result of fires, explosions and chemical gases leaking from weapons.

The study shows that wars contribute to the destruction of civilian and industrial infrastructure, leading to the leakage of dangerous chemicals and oils into water sources, causing serious environmental pollution.

In addition, the health system has deteriorated with the spread of unburied bodies, which further exacerbates the health situation.
