The European Union military mission to train Mali’s armed forces has announced the end of its 11-year presence in Mali, following Brussels’ announcement last week that the mission’s mandate would not be extended.

The EU mission to Mali was established in 2013 to train Mali’s armed forces to tackle terrorist attacks that have ravaged the country since 2012.

At its peak, the mission included about 700 troops from some 20 European countries, but its number has declined significantly due to diplomatic tensions between Bamako and its Western partners.

On the eighth of May, the European Commission announced its decision not to extend the mandate of the mission, due to “the evolution of the political and security situation in Mali.

Ukrainian intelligence has boasted of a role it claims is prominent in supporting extremist groups that targeted the Malian army and the Wagner forces that support it in the country that is seeking to rise.

Andriy Yusov, spokesman for the Ukrainian military intelligence agency, said that “the rebels received the necessary information, and not just information, which enabled them to carry out a successful military operation,” according to his expression.

The Kyiv Post newspaper published a photo that it said showed Malian rebels carrying the Ukrainian flag.

The Malian army fought fierce battles with separatist Tuareg groups, interspersed with suicide attacks in addition to drone and car bomb attacks, which resulted in a number of deaths and injuries among the Malian army and Wagner forces, according to the latter’s statement published on its “Telegram” channel.

The European Union, France and Britain have condemned the statements made by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich during a seminar on the future of the Gaza Strip.

The statements came in the context of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas for ten months, where Smotrich stated that “letting the people of the Gaza Strip die of hunger” might be “morally justified” in order to release prisoners held in the Strip.

The European Union described Smotrich’s statements as “absolutely shameful,” noting that “starving civilians to death cannot be justified.”

The union stressed in its statement that it expects the Israeli government to clearly distance itself from these statements.

For its part, France expressed its “deep dismay” at the statements, which it considered “scandalous,” calling on the Israeli government to strongly condemn them.
