US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield has called on all countries, including the UAE, to stop supporting Sudan’s warring parties.

“As I said before, history repeats itself in Darfur in the worst possible way,” Greenfield told reporters, adding that El Fasher was “on the brink of a large-scale massacre.”

For his part, the UAE ambassador to the United Nations, Mohammed Abu Shehab, stressed in a letter to the Security Council that his country “does not provide any weapons or ammunition to any faction in Sudan.”

Abu Shehab stressed that the UAE “categorically rejects any suggestion that it has provided financial, logistical or military assistance or diplomatic support to any armed group in Sudan”.

El Fasher is the last major city in Sudan’s vast Darfur region not under the control of the RSF, who are accused of involvement in ethnically motivated killings of non-Arab groups and other abuses in West Darfur.

On Friday, clashes described as violent between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces renewed in the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, and the army’s last fortress in the west of the country.

The city hosts hundreds of thousands of displaced people fleeing from the fighting in their areas, and it seems that it will witness fierce battles given the state of alert and military mobilization of the warring parties, which has been ongoing for a long time.

International calls by parties to the conflict to avoid fighting expected to cause humanitarian disasters if fighting erupts have been unsuccessful.

"There has been an increase in arbitrary killings, theft and looting of livestock, the systematic burning of entire villages in rural areas, the escalation of aerial bombardment of parts of the city, and the tightening of the siege around El Fasher," Harward said.

On Thursday, Human Rights Watch accused the RSF of committing "ethnic cleansing and killings that may indicate that genocide has occurred or is taking place against the Masalit African ethnic group, in the city of El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur state."

Sudanese students and “sympathizers with the people of Sudan from various peoples and student entities” organized a protest in New York, “in rejection of UAE support for the Rapid Support Forces.”

The German expert and former United Nations special envoy to Sudan, Volker Peretz, warned of the worsening humanitarian situation in Sudan, noting that famine is looming on the horizon.

In his statements to German television channel ‘ZDF’, Peretz explained that “the situation is getting worse because famine looms on the horizon,” and added that 18 million people, or nearly half of Sudan’s population, are threatened by acute hunger.

“Every day, four or five children die from hunger, and this number will increase in the coming weeks and months,” Peretz said.

Peretz pointed out that the harvest season in Sudan actually begins at this time of the year, but the war prevented the delivery of seeds needed for agriculture.

The Sudanese Foreign Ministry accused the international community of failing to provide aid to Sudanese refugees in Chad, who have been suffering from a three-month hiatus in humanitarian aid.

The ministry indicated in a statement on Saturday that some international bodies are focusing in a “suspicious” manner on opening the Adre border crossing between Chad and West Darfur State and are ignoring the suffering of Sudanese refugees in those areas.

This criticism comes at a time when the UAE and some UN agencies are calling for the opening of the aforementioned crossing to transport aid, but the Sudanese authorities refuse to open the crossing, accusing the Rapid Support Forces of using it to transport military equipment.

The United Nations expressed deep concern on Sunday over the deteriorating situation in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State in Sudan, amid escalating clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.

The United Nations spokesman Farhan Haq confirmed that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is monitoring developments with great concern, warning of the devastating consequences of these battles on civilians.

Haq pointed out that these clashes could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in El Fasher, especially in light of previous reports of famine in Zamzam camp south of the city, with the possibility of spreading to other displacement sites.
