Over 160 rights groups call on IOC chief to revoke 2022 Beijing Winter Games

Over 160 human rights advocacy groups have delivered a joint letter to the chief of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) calling for it to reconsider its choice to award China the 2022 Winter Games in light of Beijing’s human rights record.

It is the largest coordinated effort following several months of similar calls from individual rights groups, and comes as Beijing is facing increased international backlash over policies including its treatment of ethnic Uighurs in Xinjiang and new security laws in Hong Kong.

Separately, in an open letter released Wednesday, a coalition of over 300 civil society groups including Human Rights Watch called for the U.N. to set up an independent international mechanism to monitor and report on the human rights situation in China.

Wang Yi Visits Mongolia Hundred Protestors Defend Mongolian Language and Oppose the Forced Promotion of Chinese Teaching

The Ministry of Education of Inner Mongolia in China recently requested the primary and secondary schools in Inner Mongolia to replace Mongolian language with Chinese in some courses from the new school term. Wang Yi, China Foreign Minister, visited Inner Mongolia yesterday (15th Sept) and met with Nyamtseren Enkhtaivan, the Mongolian Foreign Minister. On the same day, about a hundred demonstrators protested and chanted slogans such as “Defend Mongolian Language”, “Stop Chinese Invasion” and “Wang Yi Go Away”.

According to Reuters, the demonstrators gathered in Sukhbaatar Square in front of the Saaral Ordon (The Government Palace) on the same day as Wang’s visit, opposing the Chinese government for demanding schools in Inner Mongolia to use the Chinese language, believing it would suppress the native language and culture of Inner Mongolia. Some demonstrators said that Mongolian leaders need to speak up - if the authority remains silent on the ground of international relations and economic stability, Mongolians will be pressed out one by one and Mongolia will cease to exist.

CCTVB fired and threatened Director citing the National Security Law

Since Hong Kong implemented the National Security Law, white terror has been spreading throughout society. A scene in the daily sit-com series “Lo and Behold” broadcasted by CCTVB [see note] on 9 Sep 2020 surprisingly showed the “Five-One” [five demands not one less] movement gesture - two yellow washing gloves in the shot, one glove with the middle finger pointing down for “one” and the other glove showing all “five”, lasting for 14 seconds. It was rumoured that this incident came about because of one playful actor in the series. He made one the yellow gloves “hold the middle finger” gesture, other actors were also laughing about it. Nobody in the scene was aware it would look like the “five-one” gesture. Someone stated that CCTVB realised it was unintentional after investigating, but management still insisted on pressuring the responsible Director of that scene, Justin, to resign.

An insider stated that: “Justin had been working at TVB for 8 years, the Company did not want to compensate for his long service, so they pushed him to tender the resignation, and threatened to report Justin to the police on possible violation of the National Security Law if he did not resign by himself.” As Justin “resigned” on his own, he was not only unable to take the long service compensation by statutory regulation, he also did not get the payment in lieu of notice for breach of employment contract. The insider stated that: “The Company had already waived Justin’s compensation of three month notice payment in lieu based on Justin’s resignation. The fact is that someone in the Company oppressed the employee to “save money”, but distorted it as “kindness” in disguise, which is a typical case of “the big stone crushing a crab” [a Chinese proverb], to the dismay of many.

Editor’s Note :
CCTVB is a portmanteau of CCTV (China Central Television) and the Hong Kong-based TVB (Television Broadcasts Limited). The combined acronym is used to convey TVB's pro-China bias.

Chinese Consulate General in Sydney Suspected of Infiltration and Placed under Investigation, Beijing Denies Accusation

The Australian authorities have searched the home and office of Shaoquett Moselmane, a former pro-China New South Wales Labour MP suspected to have been conspiring with his assistant John Zhang to infiltrate the local council. According to local media, Australian police are now investigating whether the Chinese consulate general in Sydney has been involved in infiltration and mentioned the consul, Sun Yuntao, in the search warrant. The Chinese foreign ministry criticized the accusation as “fabricated” and “slander.”

According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Sun was in contact with Moselmane and Zhang when he was coordinating China’s local united front efforts. Sun is also responsible for liaising with local pro-Beijing organisations and Chinese residents, including the Shanghainese Friendship Association, where Zhang and Moselmane serve as its leader and honorary chair respectively. The Australian authorities are now investigating whether the Chinese consulate general in Sydney have been conspiring with Zhang to infiltrate the Labour Party and influence local voters.

ABC's report also quoted Zhang as claiming that earlier when the Australian authorities searched his computer and phone for several times, they checked and copied records of his conversations with Chinese diplomats. This involved Gu Xiaojie, former of Chinese consul general in Sydney, and officials of ambassador grade in Canberra and their families.

Colonially-Revised Edition of the Law Ignored by HKSAR Government Since Transfer of Sovereignty

Before the handover, the colonial government reviewed the Crimes Ordinance 10 (1) to show the stance of common law, acts or publications with a seditious intention should “intend to cause violence or disrupt public security or cause chaos“ to be considered a crime. At that time, the pro-establishment camp has not started to participate in the drafting. The democratic camp supported the review, while then frontline Lau Wai-hing and lawmaker Margaret Ng supposed the complete abolishment of article 9 & 10.

The amendment bill was passed in LegCo in June 1997, with 23 votes for and 20 against. Yet, the government has not put the bill into effect since the handover, in addition to contradictions with Basic Law article 23, the Crimes Ordinance article 9 & 10 remain the same as the 1970 version, some articles can even be traced back to the 1938 original version.

China Rejected the German Frigate Bayern to Stay in Shanghai Harbour

Maria Adebahr, Spokesperson of the German Foreign Ministry, indicated, “China decided to reject Frigate Bayern entering the Shanghai harbour after consideration”.

Germany dispatched the Frigate Bayern to cruise in the South China Sea in early August. It is the first time for Germany to pass through the South China Sea in 20 years, where involves sovereignty disputes. Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, German Defence Minister, said this action's target is to maintain international order, being consistent with Britain, the United States, Japan and other allies in the Indo-Pacific region. In March, she expressed her annoyance on Twitter about China’s military threats. She believed Germany should corporate where they can be corporated with China and oppose if unnecessary.

The agreement between the US, UK and Australia strengthens old ties as a new era unfolds in the Indo-Pacific region

No one – least of all Beijing – believes the denials. The new defence pact between the US, UK and Australia is unmistakably aimed at containing China. The question is how substantive it will prove to be. The initial project – Canberra’s acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines, with Washington and London’s help – is prompted in part by growing Australian frustration over its troubled contract for French-made vessels. But it opens the way for greater military cooperation and is to be underpinned by wide-ranging collaboration on areas such as cyber-security, artificial intelligence and quantum computing, which China is pursuing intensively.

China warns US-UK-Australia pact could ‘hurt their own interests’

China has told the US, the UK and Australia to abandon their “cold war” mentality or risk harming their own interests after the three countries unveiled a new defence cooperation pact.

The trilateral security partnership, named Aukus, was announced on Thursday by the three nations’ leaders via video link, and will include an 18-month plan to provide Australia with nuclear-powered submarines.

It drew strong political reaction domestically in Australia and the UK, and from France, whose existing $90bn (£65bn) submarine contract with Australia has now come to an abrupt end.

Chinese delegation barred from viewing Queen Elizabeth’s coffin in parliament

A Chinese government delegation has been refused permission by the House of Commons authorities to attend the queen’s lying-in-state, opening a fresh diplomatic rift with Beijing.

House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle has told colleagues he declined a request for Chinese officials to be allowed to access Westminster Hall, where the late queen will lie in state until her funeral on Monday, a senior parliamentary figure familiar with the matter told POLITICO. Hoyle’s office said it did not comment on security matters.
