Voices of Hongkongers:
"If the law enforcers can wear masks, why can't we?"

Two women aged 81 and 70 joined the march hand in hand.

They said they have participated in every march including last week's in Kowloon. They said the government has betrayed justice, as the authorities only suppress citizens, but never reflect on why people are protesting. This is why the two oppose the anti-mask law, "If the law enforcers can wear masks, why can't we?"

They also hope that the young people can stay safe, as it saddens them to witness them being arrested.

Student: Guy Fawkes Mask Symbolizes resistance against the oppressors and unconditional support to protestors

November 5 marked one month since the establishment of anti-mask law. At Ying Wah College, some students organised a sit-in protest outside of the school front door with Guy Fawkes masks on. Students from neighbouring schools also participated in the protest.

Wong, student representative of the Ying Wah College Anti-ELAB Student Concern Group said, the Guy Fawkes mask is not a simple mask just for fun, it also contains the meaning of resistance against the oppressor and unconditional support to protestors. Wong hopes they can let others be aware that a good number of students are still very concerned about the anti-ELab protests; and the students are going to keep resisting the unfair laws set up by the government.

Mask Ban Reinstated Despite Being "Unconstitutional"

The High Court just announced that the Hong Kong police can enforce a mask ban for the next seven days, despite the earlier ruling that the law enacted under emergency powers was unconstitutional.

//The government had asked the court to temporarily suspend its ruling while the issue goes through the appeals process.

The government request came after the legislative affairs commission of the National People's Congress Standing Committee controversially claimed that Hong Kong's courts do not have the authority to decide whether the SAR's laws are constitutional or not and this power rests solely with the NPCSC.//

One Country, Two Systems 2.0

(21 Nov) A trait of the trend towards "One Country" is the capriciousness and utter lack of integrity of the government. In the past, the government owed its effective governance to middlemen whose words can be trusted, and who can thus become a bridge between both sides in a crisis or conflict. To be honest, I have taken on similar roles in the past. But ever since Hong Kong entered "One Country, Two Systems 2.0," this kind of trust is completely gone. The government often receives different commands and vacillates; occasionally it even appears to be intentionally manipulating the middlemen to set up a trap. Add that to the tradition of never admitting to mistakes, and the result is a wasteful depletion of trust on all sides.

The deal was that secondary school students would "leave voluntarily" and wouldn't be charged, yet once they were out they had suddenly "turned themselves in"; earlier authorities even said, "everyone on campus would be charged with rioting." Such operating style is not far from that of China's National Security Police. In future cases of the same nature, who would still be able to mediate? Or had the government's aim always been to debilitate all middlemen such that all matters must only be solved in the most forceful way possible?

"It was you who taught us that private negotiations were useless." [An allusion to a viral graffiti spotted at protest scenes: "It was you who taught us that peaceful marches are useless."]

HK Magistrate dismisses pro-democracy protester’s defense, calling it "impractical"

In October 2019, when the authorities forcefully imposed the anti-mask law in Hong Kong, citizens took to the street. The protest later turned into police-civilian clashes in several districts.

A 22-year-old shopkepper, Wong Tsz-shun, was arrested for obstructing a police officer in Yuen Long on that day and his case was heard in Tuen Mun Magistrate Court on January 19, 2021.

In the concluding statement, the defense pointed out numerous inconsistencies of the charge and challenged the contradictatory evidence and testimonies presented by the Hong Kong Police Force.

Surprisingly, Magistrate Wong Chin-yue was provoked and rebuked in defense of the Police Force, “it seems a common practice for defending lawyers to pick on the time evidence and distance evidence presented by the prosecution, without considering practicality. It is impossible for the police officers to take these cases like an industrial accident where they take precise measurement of time and distance.”

In anger, the Magistrate banged the table and walked away.

Defending for himself in the hearing, Wong said he was hanging out in Yuen Long where he ran into Chief Inspector Leung Chi-hang. He wasn’t sure whether Leung was speaking to him, so he carried on moving forward. Soon after he walked pass Leung, he felt being pulled from behind and was about to lose balance.

He stepped forward in an attempt to catch his balance, only to be tripped by debris and fell forward. At that moment, he heard someone shouting, “stand still!”.

When he reached out to roadside railings for support, so that he could stand up again, the police officers pepper-sprayed him on his face at close range.

Wong said, “they pepper-sprayed my entire face.” As a result, he could not see clearly, and found it hard to breathe.

Wong said the police instruction was confusing. Moments after one officer asked him not to move, another one told him to stand up. When he felt someone was grabbing him by his hands, he was terrified and tried to hold on to something, but to no avail.

He later was pressed down to the ground by a police officer. He struggled to avoid a head injury, but quickly he was pinned to the ground and cuffed.

Wong stressed that the police officer put handcuff on him without cautioning him.
