Police Raise Blue Warning Flag Accusing Citizens of "Destroying Stability"

22:02 | Prince Edward, Hong Kong
Like any last day of the month, Hongkongers mourned victims of police brutality outside Prince Edward Station.

On Aug 31, 2019, Hong Kong police notoriously attacked train passengers with pepper spray and baton. After 14 months, many Hongkongers refused to forget the trauma.

On Oct 31, 2020, citizens brought flowers to the station as usual but were faced with tremendous police opposition.

In the video, the police hoisted a blue warning flag and warned civilians on the spot of participating in an "illegal assembly". Meanwhile, an eye catching yellow banner that read "I want genuine universal suffrage" went past.

Hongkonger Parodizes Police Commissioner on Halloween

On Halloween, a Hong Kong citizen dressed up as the city's police commissioner Chris Tang and appeared at Prince Edward. Reporters hoped to conduct an interview, while the person jokingly asked the reporters to talk to the "PPRB", the public relation branch of the police. "#ChrisTang" also made fun of a pro-police actor who is recently charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Oct 31, 2020 also marks 14 months after the Prince Edward 8.31 police attack of train passengers in 2019.

Hong Kong's Department of Justice Files Appeal After Court Clears Rioting Charges Against Civilians

A District Court judge in Hong Kong had earlier withdrawn a rioting charge against Jackie Chen, a social worker and a council member of the Social Workers’ General Union, citing the lack of prima facie evidence as a reason.

The same judge also cleared the seven other defendants, aged 20 to 27 of rioting charges, saying the prosecution has failed to prove the offences beyond all reasonable doubt.

Government's prosecutors, however, have filed an appeal to reverse the judge’s decision to dismiss the rioting charge of social worker Jackie Chen. The Department of Justice on Oct 5 , 2020 wrote to Chen’s lawyer saying that the court had erred in law and the Department would file an appeal, even before the court handed down detailed reasons for the decision.

Chen said on Facebook that if the court agreed with the arguments put forward by prosecution, she would have to face trial again, but she believed she had the protection of God and support from her lawyer Hectar Pun.

Young Hongkonger Grieves Loss of Freedom of Expression

After being detained and searched by police behind cordon lines, this young protester showed up at Prince Edward MTR station in remembrance of the victims of the 8.31 police attack last year.

The youngster told reporters that he felt that he was being deprived of freedom of expression. He reiterated that Hong Kong used to be one of the world’s freest city. Citizens’ freedom and rights, however, are being eroded, as they are no longer allowed to express their views and stance freely, even when they were not disturbing anyone else.

UK Media: Intelligence Agencies Recruit Chinese Talents to Strengthen Intelligence Investigations against China's Spy War

In response to the growing threat from China and its espionage activities, the UK media reported that the national intelligence agencies would recruit Chinese language talents for a variety of intelligence activities.

The Evening Standard reported that MI6, MI5 and the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) would soon increase the recruitment of language experts, particularly Chinese speakers, to be at the "heart of intelligence investigations".

Some job boards have already posted recruitment notices by the intelligence agencies, "Coming soon: MI5, MI6 and GCHQ will soon launch recruitment campaigns for Chinese language experts". Adding that, the Chinese language experts at MI5 will use their language skills to provide intelligence analysis and play an active role in directing projects and advancing investigations.

The report pointed out that China’s espionage activities have reached a considerable scale, intending to steal intellectual property and other commercial secrets and interfere in politics. The new MI5 director, Ken McCallum, said earlier that British intelligence officers discovered that China attempts to interfere in politics. He also revealed that Britain, which recently thwarted China's political interference in the European Union, is facing a severe challenge from these "hostile acts".

Leader of Conservative Party in Canada Criticises China Again and Promises to Prioritise National Interests If Conservative Party Rules Government

The Leader of the Conservative Party in Canada Erin O’Toole once again criticised China and the ruling Liberal Party. He pointed out that Canadian politicians and large companies have moved a large number of manufacturing job opportunities to China, betraying the local workers. The Chinese government, on the other hand, has repeatedly violated international standards, failed to open its domestic market to foreign enterprises justly, and has broken its promises on human rights protection at the same time.

O’Toole gave a video speech at the Canadian Club Toronto, saying that too much power was in the hands of big corporations. They disrupted the balance between businessmen and workers when they migrated their production lines to China. He said that the job opportunities, steady salary and pension that Canadian workers used to enjoy in the past, were now part of a “bygone era”.

He questioned at the session, “If businesses can just pay 50 cents (CAD) per hour to the Chinese workers, why would they be willing to pay CAD 30 to local workers?”

O’Toole pointed out that the political and financial elites did not suffer from much loss under economic crisis and continued to let China seize more job opportunities from its manufacturing industry. He raised the example of the Canadian government that allowing China becomes the main supplier of medical equipment and drugs in Canada, which contradicts national interests. He emphasised that a Conservative government would prioritise national interests and that it would not only pay attention to its national GDP but also strive to unite the country in all aspects.

Police Allegedly Frames and Traps Hong Kong Student for Transporting "Petrol Bombs"

A 21-year-old student was found to have two #PetrolBombs with him when he was stopped and searched by the police near Kwai Chung Police Station in Hong Kong on the night of April 13, 2020.

The case is, however, not that straightforward. A police sheriff, who had a past record of obstruction of justice, was suspected to have framed and trapped the student.

Despite this, the Department of Justice (#DOJ) did not arrest the sheriff, but prosecuted the student over the charge over "possession of offensive weapons". The student rejected the charge, as he was only told to carry two bottles of "red wine". The case was presented in court on October 31, 2021.

The sheriff was not on the witness list, so the defence requested to summon him to the court as a witness on the next day. The court was required to warn the police that his testimony might lead him to be prosecuted.

In addition, the defence also revealed that the police had failed to bring in a key witness who was the one asking the defendant to bring two bottles of "red wine," which were petrol bomb in disguise, to the location involved.

According to a source, when the middle man was arrested, he revealef that the sheriff involved had asked him to find a "fool" to frame and trap. This was how the entire case is disclosed.

The prosecutor summoned a police officer of Kwai Chung Task Force. The officer said that the sheriff had joined the team for more than a month. On the day before the incident, the sheriff mentioned a piece of intelligence that there would be a person hiding petrol bombs in the flower rack in Kwai Fong Estate, and asked the team members to take special care of it. However, the sheriff suddenly disappeared for more than one hour in that evening, until the defendant was arrested.

Exclusive: University of Hong Kong makes library users register to access some politically sensitive books

The library at Hong Kong’s top university has introduced a new system under which readers must register in advance to gain access to some politically sensitive books or archive materials.

A Hong Kong researcher said the new policy, which follows moves by the city’s public libraries to remove some titles, might impede study of more “sensitive” topics.

The new system has been installed at the University of Hong Kong’s (HKU) Special Collections, a space separated by a glass wall within the Main Library building. The area “houses a unique collection of Hong Kong materials, rare books, and microforms,” according to HKU’s website.
