#Court Changes the Charge of 12 Pro-democracy Protesters including Actor Gregory Wong
to Rioting

On July 1, 2019, pro-democracy protesters entered the Legislative Council chamber to voice t

Activist Ventus Lau and actor Gregory Wong were among those who were charged with "entering or attempting to enter the Chamber or the precincts of the Chamber". On June 9, the court suddenly changed their charges to rioting. This means that the maximum sentence they will face jumped from 3 months to 10 years.

When they were mentioned in court on June 10, about 50 citizens showed support outside the court.

Before entering the court, Lau said, apart from the 12 protesters being charged in the incident on July 1 2019, the other 600 protestors facing rioting charges need equal attention. "Say if one coach bus takes 100 passengers, that means there are 6 full loaded coaches of people who are facing up to 10 years in jail. They bet their future on this fight just to speak out for Hong Kongers".

"On this day which marks the one year anniversary of Hong Kong's movement, we need to keep the our five demands in mind, especially the 'retraction of characterisation of protests as rioting'", Lau added, "When you look at the 600+ civilians being charged with rioting, we can't afford to give up".

Actor Gregory Wong was also present in the court hearing. He described the change of charge as "white terror", and said he was already prepared to be charged from the moment he took part in the movement. Wong hopes that HongKongers can keeping fighting despite the government's suppression.

Among the supporters who showed up, a middle school student said he rushed to the court right after school. "The fact that they changed the charges to rioting on no other day but this anniversary day has made me realise that Hong Kongers have to persist in fighting, until the day Hong Kong become independent."

#VentusLau believes he has done his best and the next generation will do better

Ventus Lau has been arrested four times since 2019. Seven years ago, he thought he could change Hong Kong if he took part in politics. However, he felt his political life was over after he was disqualified from Legislation Council elections.

In 2019, the anti-ELAB (Extradition Law Amendment Bill) movement led to his political life's resurgence.

In this movement, as an organizer of rallies and marches, he submitted applications for Letters of No Objection. In the end, he was arrested thrice and was accused of four different crimes. The maximum term of imprisonment is ten years in jail for the crime of rioting.

After participating in the pro-democracy primary election, Ventus Lau was quiet for a while and planned to enjoy his last period of freedom until he would be sent to prison. However, he was unexpectedly arrested again because of participating in the primary election and felt like fodder this time. "53 people, including me, have done all we could. What else I can doā€¦," he said.

He didn't complain and feel regret, but he felt sorry that he didn't do his best. "if we use Baggio's rhetoric, we are building a path [for the future]. If the authority wants to arrest me and I need to sacrifice, it's fine. But I hope someone behind can pick it up this tough job, so that my sacrifice will have meaning," he said.

"I have strong feeling that the younger generation will do much better than me," he said.

Hong Kong mass arrest: Proud to sacrifice my future for Hong Kong, said Activist Ventus Lau

On Feb 28, 2021, Hong Konh pro-democracy activist #VentusLau reported to the police station in the afternoon, and spoke to reporters before entering the station.

Lau said that on this day 5 years ago, localist and pro-democracy activist #EdwardLeung Tin-kei received 66,000 votes during the 2016 New Territories East Legislative Council by-election, establishing a place for localists in the city's political spectrum.

During an interview, Leung, now in prison, said that the reason he did not leave Hong Kong was to show Hongkongers that someone is still willing to sacrifice his future for Hong Kong. Lau felt honoured that he could become that ā€œsomeoneā€ as well.

Lau criticised the Hong Kong SAR governmentā€™s arrest of the dozens of activists, calling it naive to assume that this would bring an end to the democracy movement in Hong Kong. He believed Hongkongers will prove the government wrong. He urged Hongkongers to keep the faith, and turn their anger into their strength, so that he could witness the day when everyone could finally meet each other outside of Legco - alluding to the pledge of protesters to finally meet again in victory one day.

Before heading into the police station, Lau said, ā€œDonā€™t forget to include me in the crowd count in the next rally or assemblyā€.

District Councillor #FergusLeung, who also reported to the police station on the same day, expected that he would very likely be accused and no bail would be granted, and he felt sad to leave behind everyone and everything around him. However, he still hoped Hongkongers would understand that today is not the end of Hong Kongā€™s democracy movement. Whether it ends now or not is all up to Hongkongers. He did not regret his decision, and said that Hong Kong's democracy movement is a long battle, ad hope Hongkongers can stand firm in these difficult times.
