Corpse Discovery Cases Increased by 300 Cases Compared with the Previous Year

Since the start of the anti-extradition bill movement in June 2019, the Hong Kong Police have repeatedly classified body discovery cases as "not suspicious", raising the alarm of the public.

In response to the inquiry made by the Legislative Council's Finance Committee, the police revealed that although the number of missing persons reported last year was slightly lower than in 2018, the number of corpses discovered has increased.

Police said that there were 2,643 missing persons reported last year, which is about 400 fewer than the 3,046 cases in 2018, compared to 3,113 in 2017 and 3,519 in 2016.

However, the number of corpses discovered last year has increased. Among them, there were 8,148 "deaths before hospitalization, deaths during transport, and corpse discovery", an increase of more than 300 cases from 2018. There were also 713 cases of "falling from a height", an increase of about 40 cases compared to 2018.

The police also pointed out that the case may be reclassified after the investigation is completed, including as a suicide case. As for many Members who asked the police to provide the number of cases classified as "undoubted", the police only stated that the relevant sub-items were not kept.

Pro-Bejing Lawmaker urges retribution for striking doctors and nurses, CE Carrie Lam Refuses to Say No

//...A reporter pointed out that medical workers are not asking for a waiver of registration fees. Rather, they are asking for a stable and viable medical system in Hong Kong; and also the assurance that they will not be reprimanded for participating in the strikes.

Carrie Lam responded saying that these are issues to be resolved by the Hospital Authority and medical staff, and that the government cannot get involved. Carrie Lam refuses to promise that retribution would not be sought.//

Pro-Bejing Lawmaker urges retribution for striking doctors and nurses, CE Carrie Lam Refuses to Say No

Shorter version:
https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/19418

The Finance Committee of the Legislative Council held special meetings for four consecutive days to discuss the "Budget" and the government's fiscal expenditure for the next year. At the meeting on 8 Mar 2020, Regina Ip, a former security chief who now heads the pro-Beijing New People's Party, proposed to settle accounts with the strikers: She advised the Hospital Authority (HA) not to issue specialist qualifications to doctors who had participated in the strike.

The remarks drew the ire of pro democracy legislators, who criticized Ip for using "Cultural Revolution-style denunciation" by advocating retribution and smearing of medical staff. They emphasized that the medical workers’ strike was called to request for a comprehensive border closure so as to avoid a collapse of the medical system.

On the same day, Carrie Lam announced relief measures including the waiver of licence and registration fees for medical workers for three years. A reporter pointed out that medical workers are not asking for a waiver of registration fees. Rather, they are asking for a stable and viable medical system in Hong Kong; and also the assurance that they will not be reprimanded for participating in the strikes. Lam responded saying that these are issues to be resolved by the Hospital Authority and medical staff, and that the government cannot get involved. Carrie Lam refuses to promise that retribution would not be sought.

On April 8, 2021, Hong Kong Customs raided a pro-democracy 'yellow' retailer AbouThai with over 100 officers and seized goods worth almost HK$1 million. The authorities also arrested the responsible person in the branch.

Customs claimed that certain products from the shop did not have bilingual labels and insisted that the operation was not a suppression.

AbouThai was founded by #MikeLam, who is among the 47 pro-democracy figures charged under the National Security Law for joining the Primary Election of the pro-democracy camp in 2020.

University Student in HK Charged With National Security Violation for Reportedly Possessing Pepper Ball Gun

A 23-year-old university student in Hong Kong, who was originally accused of possessing a pepper ball gun without a licence, is now charged with "inciting secession" under the #NationalSecurityLaw.

The new charge was added by the prosecution when the case was mentioned in court on April 8, 2021.

In February, the prosecution made the news for grammatical mistakes in the indictment document such as "one piece pepper ball" and "two pieces pepper ball". The judge ordered the prosecution to correct the primary-school level English mistakes before continuing the trial, lest it becomes "the laughingstock of foreign courts.”

IPAC : It is absurd that mere applause during a court case can be construed as a seditious act

The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (#IPAC) condemns the arrest of 6 individuals on suspicion of seditious intention to incite hatred, contempt or rebellion against the administration of justice in Hong Kong after applauding during the trial of Chow Hang-tung’s June Fourth memorial incitement case in early 2022.

The individuals arrested include the vice-chairman of the now disbanded Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (#HKCTU), Leo Tang, and citizen journalist Siew Yun-Long (Siu Wan).

The sedition charges were made under Sections 9 and 10 of the Crimes Ordinance – colonial era laws that have been criticised by the UN Human Rights Committee and frequently used by the Hong Kong authorities to crack down on legitimate protest.

The other individuals arrested were citizen observers at the courts who frequently witness political cases.

"Not only are these charges wrong and to be condemned, but they also demonstrate how far the rule of law has deteriorated in Hong Kong," IPAC said in its statement.

IPAC also calls on governments to hold the Chinese and Hong Kong authorities to account for these abuses and appeals for all overseas judges to withdraw from serving on Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal in this further undermining of the independence and integrity of Hong Kong’s legal system.
