Barrister #PaulHarris Leaves Hong Kong After Being Approached by National Security Police
The former chairperson of the Hong Kong Bar Association (#HKBA), Paul Harris, has reportedly left Hong Kong on March 1, 2022, hours after local media said he was summoned to a meeting with the #NationalSecurityPolice.
He confirmed to Reuters that he had left, saying that he returned to see his mother in England.
Harris’ departure comes after his meeting with national security police at the police headquarters in Wan Chai earlier that afternoon.
In the meeting, he was said to be given a warning over an alleged breach of the security legislation connected to a NGO Hong Kong Human Rights Monitor, of which Harris was the founding chairperson.
The rights group has been accused by state-run media of colluding with foreign forces and playing a “major role” in the anti-extradition protests in 2019.

IPAC : It is absurd that mere applause during a court case can be construed as a seditious act
The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (#IPAC) condemns the arrest of 6 individuals on suspicion of seditious intention to incite hatred, contempt or rebellion against the administration of justice in Hong Kong after applauding during the trial of Chow Hang-tung’s June Fourth memorial incitement case in early 2022.
The individuals arrested include the vice-chairman of the now disbanded Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (#HKCTU), Leo Tang, and citizen journalist Siew Yun-Long (Siu Wan).
The sedition charges were made under Sections 9 and 10 of the Crimes Ordinance – colonial era laws that have been criticised by the UN Human Rights Committee and frequently used by the Hong Kong authorities to crack down on legitimate protest.
The other individuals arrested were citizen observers at the courts who frequently witness political cases.
"Not only are these charges wrong and to be condemned, but they also demonstrate how far the rule of law has deteriorated in Hong Kong," IPAC said in its statement.
IPAC also calls on governments to hold the Chinese and Hong Kong authorities to account for these abuses and appeals for all overseas judges to withdraw from serving on Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal in this further undermining of the independence and integrity of Hong Kong’s legal system.

In Hong Kong, two staff members of #RoyalTea, a bubble tea shop in Mong Kok that is known for its pro-democracy stance, were taken away by the police on April 11, 2022 to "assist with an investigation".
When the shop reopened on April 14, 2022, about 10 customers patronized it in the first 15 minutes.
A regular customer who came to show support said that the bubble tea shop could be forced to close down for making known its pro-democracy stance.
"I would do whatever I can to show my support when the shop still opens."
A British student in Hong Kong, Sam visited RoyalTea for the first time. Sam said, althought he doesn't know the local political situation well, he has witnessed "a lot of political changes going on in Hong Kong" in the past year. Sam said that the community has been "oppressed".
Sam is hoping to show his support for those still clinging tight to their beliefs in Hong Kong.
Jessica, one of the two staff members being taken away by the police for "investigation" said she felt "terrified and lost" during police investigation.

She said some volunteers working for thr group were visited by the national security police. The friends of these volunteers have also become the target of the police. After evaluating the situation, the group decide not to pursue any protest on the day.
Meanwhile, #AveryNg, a core member of the grouo who was recently released from the prison, was reportedly under the police surveilance. Ng posted the sentence "I'm in prison, if you know what I mean" on his social media page. Many associated the incident to how the Chinese police surveyed and monitored dissidents like Lu Xia before important days.

In March 2023, the Hong Kong National Security Police detained a female student, accusing her of making multiple provocative posts and sharing photos on her social media accounts, including promoting Hong Kong independence.
The 23-year-old student was said to study in Japan. She went back to Hong Kong in March to renew her Hong Kong identity card.
She was charged with one count of incitement and appeared in court for the first time at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court on 16 June.
The defense raised concerns about the jurisdiction of the court to handle the case. They argued that a significant portion of the posts were made outside of Hong Kong and that the prosecution had exceeded the time limit for prosecution. The prosecution responded by stating that the legal disputes were currently awaiting resolution at the appellate court and suggested that the case be adjourned until the appeals process concludes.
Chief Magistrate Peter Law Tak-chuen, who is designated under the National Security Law, granted bail with certain conditions. These conditions included a restriction on leaving Hong Kong, the requirement to delete all social media applications, and the surrendering of related accounts to the police for inspection.
The case was adjourned until August 2nd for further proceedings.
The defendant remained composed throughout the hearing, while her family members shed tears upon hearing the decision. As she left the court, she was accompanied by Deputy Secretary for Transport and Housing, Yau Shing-mu.
