Hong Kong Police Oppress Civilians on Mother's Day
On Mother's Day, police conducted mass arrest in multiple districts. Civilians chanted protest slogans and sang songs in shopping malls in Tsim Sha Tsui, Mongkok, Tai Koo, Shatin, Tsuen Wan and Yuen Long.
In Tsim Sha Tsui, police took away a 13-year-old student reporter after mocking him. The boy said "Happy Mother's Day" to his mother outside the police station.
In Mongkok, police besieged and terrified civilians and reporters, ordering them to "cry louder". Police also disallowed a mother from bringing an ashma inhaler to save her teenage daughter, pushing the mother close to a nervous breakdown.
Police assaulted and arrested legislator Roy Kwong brutally by pressing his head with their knees. Male police officers not only trespassed the female public toilet, but also swept away the civilians at Sai Yee Street Park.

On May 11 at around 11:20pm, 50 civilians including TMHK reporter were encircled by the riot police at the intersection of Shantung Street and Sai Yeung Choi Street South. Police ordered all civilians to kneel on the ground and the detention lasted more than an hour.
According to TMHK reporter, riot police kept pepper-spraying pepper, forming and trapping the pungent liquid on the ground. Police then pressed the reporter's head on the ground for a certain duration, causing burnt and pain on his head, neck and back.

As Special Tactics Squad (Raptor) officers charged past a bus stop on Nathan Road in Mongkok at around 10pm, several of them grabbed a middle-aged woman by her head and began shoving her around.
They only let her go after several bystanders began calling them out: "Raptors are beating up a woman!"
The police left without detaining the woman or laying charges. The reason of their assaulting of the woman remained unknown.
May 10 is Mother's Day.

13-Year-Old Reporter Released: Shows Respect for Journalists and Hopes to Report the Truth
Netizens initiated the “Shopping on Mother’s Day” and “Sing With You” campaigns on Sunday (#May10), during which in Tsim Sha Tsui Harbour City 13-year-old reporter Luk was arrested for participating in an illegal assembly. The police accused him of holding a press pass not issued by the Hong Kong Journalists Association, and that he would be an illegal child labourer if he was indeed a reporter. The police also scolded him: “It’s your future, and it’s out of my reach.” Soon after he was released, Luk was searched again, and ended up being brought into a police vehicle with an accompanying female reporter.
That night, he was released in the company of his mother and Yu Tak-po, vice chairman of the Yau Tsim Mong District Council. Luk’s mother said that the police threatened to charge her if “the son was seen at this kind of event again”. She said that the police told her that her son was now under discretion, and she received an explanation on Protection of Children and Juveniles Ordinance, which she believes was to clarify and inform her of her legal responsibility, and to encourage her to deny her son’s request to report again.
She believed that while the situation was quite unusual, it allowed her son to grow, so that he could learn how to deal with “a big scene”. But she stressed that she would estimate the risk before he goes out to report, and would stop him if it is too dangerous. She continued by stating she kept up with her son’s live broadcast, and would know immediately if he were in danger. “I told him that you would be a target of the police because of your build and appearance. He promised me that he knew how to handle that. He would cooperate in a search and would tell me afterwards. I think he sounds okay, so I let him go out there.”
Luk further explained that he wanted to help report the truth and due to his deep respect for journalists, he wants to become one in the future. “I quite respect journalists. They have such a hard time on scene, and are treated so badly by the police. I really respect all of you, and I want to be in this profession.” When asked about what he will say to his mother, Luk could not hold back his tears. Soon after he told her,
“Happy Mother’s Day, and I’m sorry.”

However, a police officer then grabbed her camera and pepper-sprayed her at a close distance. She could not breathe and lost consciousness. On May 7, 2021, widespread food poisoning occurred at Penny’s Bay Quarantine Centre in Hong Kong, following the government's implementation of mass quarantine. Many civilians under quarantine said they suffered from diarrhea after eating the meals provided by the government.
Low quality and poor hygiene are common sight in Hong Kong’s quarantine centres that are managed by the authorities, as tantalising images of the meals spread on the internet. Netizens described the steamed meat as "brick-like", just as moulded fruits were also sighted.
Ray Chui, President of the Institution of Dining Art, said on the Commercial Radio podcast "On a Clear Day", that he suspected the hygiene problems are related to the logistics of these meals.
He believed the government should change its “lowest bid wins” policy to improve the quality of its meals.
Answering media's inquiry, the Department of Health in Hong Kong said the meals from the concerned food supplier #DannyCatering will no longer be served. The same caterer has also caused food poisoning to 20 primary school students in 2019 due to hygiene issues.
When asked if the Department has sought contractors through Open Tendering, the government only replied by saying that the Department welcomed tender offers, admitting they didn’t follow such procedures.

On May 10, 2021, the Coroner’s Court in Hong Kong has opened the inquest into the death of “yellow raincoat man” #MarcoLeung Ling-kit, the first martyred Hong Kong protestor, who on June 15, 2019, fell from a scaffolding at Pacific Place mall in Admiralty after unfurling a banner with the Five Demands of the protests.
Leung’s parents were absent from court.
Inside the court room, the personal belongings of Leung were exhibited. These include a banner that read "Fully withdraw extradition to China, we are not rioters" and his famous yellow poncho displaying the line "Carrie Lam kills Hong Kong, Corrupt Cop is Coldblooded".
Apart from these, there is also a black T-shirt with the words “I am lost in Hong Kong” and a notebook where he wrote “I am frustrated by this Hong Kong.”
A clip of the incident was shown in court, in which Democrat Roy Kwong and other citizens tried to persuade Leung not to commit suicide. “Walk back!” “We still have tomorrow. Let’s march together tomorrow!”
Macro Leung died on June 15, 2019, a day before a march which sees 2 million Hongkongers taking to the street, the largest the city has ever witnessed. He has since become an icon in Hong Kong’s resistance movement.

24-year-old #TongYingKit is the first person in Hong Kong charged with national security violation. On July 1, 2020, he displayed a flag that writes "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times" on his motorbike and drove towards three police officers in the protest scene. It was the first day when the national security law came into effect after bypassing the city's legislature.
Tong was charged with "terrorism and inciting se" and has been detained since then. The trial will begin in June 2021.
The Hong Kong court has earlier
denied him a trial by jury. Tong filed a review. The first hearing took place on May 10, 2021.
Senior Counsel Philip Dykes, representing Tong, pointed out in court, "Trial by jury helps ensure the independence and quality of judges... by ensuring that they, and not judges appointed by the executive, actually deliver a verdict in a prosecution started by the government... Trials by a body might afford a defendant some protection against laws which they find harsh or oppressive."
The prosecution, however, claimed that defendants in Hong Kong do not have a constitutional or fundamental right to trial by jury.

Following the eruption of the 2019 Anti-ELAB movements and amid the coronavirus pandemic, it is found that more Chinese students have been admitted the universities in Hong Kong.
According to the documents released by the Education Bureau, among the 8 UFC-funded universities, 6 made new heights in the admission of Chinese students in the 2020/21 Academic Year.
Particularly in #LingnanUniversity, #BaptistUniversity and #EducationUniversity, the
student composition is greatly imbalanced, with Chinese students making up 80% of all non-local students.
The University Grants Committee (#UGC) claimed that international undergraduate admission has taken a hit owing to the pandemic, thwarting the plans of overseas talents to study in Hong Kong.

【明報專訊】反修例風波及新冠疫情夾擊，坊間流傳本港流失大量內地生，不過八大及自資院校數據未有反映此現象。據教育局資料，8間資助大學中，在發生反修例事件後的2020/21學年，6間大學的內地生佔整體學生比例均有上升，最高的港大達16.7%。非本地生組成依然不均，內地生佔比同樣上升，嶺大、浸大、教大則有逾八成非本地學士生為內地生。教資會稱，今學年的海外招生情况難免受疫情影響，擾亂海外學生到香港學習的計劃。
