Police issue order to disperse in Tin Shui Wai

1942 | Tin Shui Wai
After consulting with local councilors, the police have allotted 20 minutes for the crowd to disperse. However, from previous events, it is uncertain if the police will start the armed dispersion in the mall early.

1944
Tin Shui Wai District Councillor Ng Kin Wai said the police said that if the crowd does not disperse after 20 minutes, they will enter the mall again and issue fines under the gathering ban. The District Councillor said that the shopping mall is still open, and the public has the right to shop and eat. It is therefore difficult to determine whether the charges will be valid.

1950
District Councilor Ng Yuk-ying transfers a message from the police, suggesting that the force will enter the mall at 8pm, protesters will be prosecuted if they refuse to leave.

Interview with Shatin District Councilor Mike Chan – HongKongers are losing freedom of expression as police use law enforcement for political suppression

Q: What is your opinion of police operations tonight?

A: I couldn't tell what riot police were attempting to do, when a large group of them stormed into the shopping mall disturbing shoppers and passers-by there. Some civilians were trying to get to the bus station and depart, but they were strained, being blocked by police cordon line. While it's in their powers to establish cordon lines to facilitate operation, police should also show civilians how to leave. I've tried to reason with the officers about this several times.

Police aggression disturbs peaceful night in Mongkok –
Interview with District Councilor Ben Lam Siu-Bun (Mong Kok East)

Q: What happened earlier?

A: Around midnight (May 1), a large group of around 40 riot police disembarked from 3-4 EU police cars at Bank Center, and they set up cordon line at the junction of Shanghai street and Sai Yeung Choi Street South.

Q: What was going on?

A: I didn’t witness the whole incident from beginning to end. There were 10 - 20 civilians wandering around Bank Center, just peacefully going about their night lives. I suspect that the police thought these people might have violated the gathering ban, so they came to drive the people away.

Objectively speaking, yes, the 10-20 people might have been too close together. But to send 40-50 riot police to intimidate them - is that really necessary? They also briefly set up cordon lines, but less than 10 mins later the whole troop went back to their cars and left.

Q: Several riot police were acting quite aggressively, banging on their shields, yelling at civilians and ordering them to leave at once. How would you comment on their behavior?

A: Yes, banging on shields like that in the middle of the night really disturbs the residents in their homes nearby. They were also quite hostile towards reporters and district councilors on the scene. I saw one civilian using an ATM machine by himself, and the police still went over to intimidate him. He was quite startled.

They set up another cordon line on Nathan Road facing Sai Yeung Choi street South, but only for about one minute. This is completely unnecessary; it's a waste of police resources.

Q: Would you bring up these concerns to the Mong Kok police district commander, particularly their disturbing the peace of the community?

Our District Council has been discussing police aggression in meetings almost every month. However the police representatives who attended were not receptive to our suggestions, and sometimes they even left halfway through the meeting. We certainly will continue to bring up these concerns, but I also would not expect the police to change their ways.

Legislator Jeremy Tam Comments on Police Badges and Activity at Diamond Hill

2000 | #DiamondHill

"[The police’s] ranks and badges were not properly shown tonight. Even the Boy Scouts have proper badges and a manual to explain what each is. [Because police were not wearing them] we are reporting a complaint.

When they came in, they yelled at people to leave nearby restaurants. But these people were waiting in line for food and only did after the police come in did the the restaurants close the gates. It’s clear that there will be more than 8 people in a mall shopping. Does that mean all of them should be fined? They are clearly misconstruing the law. I wish they would leave immediately and let this community go back to normal."

Mother stops son from leaving home to prevent being arrested

On May 10, "Sing with You" event was initiated in multiple districts. Large group of riot police were deployed, stopping and searching citizens in that morning.

Mrs. Cheng, who was eating ice cream next to the police's corden line and refused to be filmed, said that she took advantage of Mother's Day to go out with her husband and celebrate, but found the police standing by everywhere in the mall, preventing her and other citizens from shopping.

Her eyes got red when saying that she was dissatisfied with the police's use of the gathering ban as an excuse to target and arrest teenagers. She admitted that she felt heartache as a mother and told his teenage son to stay at home to avoid being arrested.

The Fight Goes On: Protest Slogans Sounded in Multiple Shopping Malls in Hong Kong

Photo album:

Increasingly, the Hong Kong government has been tightening their grip over pro-democracy activities in past few weeks as the Coronavirus epidemic came under control. Such suppression didn’t stifle protesting activities but sparked even stronger discontent among Hongkongers and sporadic peaceful protests such as “Sing with You” and “Shop with You” spawning in shopping malls have become ubiquitous.

In the afternoon on May 16, netizens initiated a "Shop with You" event in five shopping malls, including East Point City, Yoho Mall, MOKO, New Town City and Olympian City. Soon after peaceful protesters started to chant slogans and sang, riot police charged in to clear shoppers out, sometimes setting cordon lines in the mall, causing even more panic and chaos to both the shoppers and shopkeepers.

Although riot police usually leaves the scene after a while, groups of plainclothes police officers continued to lurk in the mall. In Tseung Kwan O East Point City, 8 civilians were arrested today in the first 30 minutes of the event when there was no sighted complication on the scene. The tension between police and reporters sustained as a plainclothes police officer was seen drawing his baton at a group of reporters at the 1st Floor of the mall in Tseung Kwan O.

In Mong Kok Moko mall and Yuen Long Yoho mall, multiple memos with rhymes and short poems jabbing the police force for the recent incident of police officers arrested with methemphethamines have been attached to the railings for passers-by to read.

People start to stream in to join tonight's "Sing with You" activity. Many of them are standing at the balconies of the atrium, while some of them are at the atrium itself. Protest slogans can be heard reverberating through the mall as more and more people start to join in.
