Altar for Chow Tsz-Lok and Chan Yin-Lam was set on fire in Tseung Kwan O

Since 2019, civilians have built an altar at Sheung Tak Car Park, from where 22-year-old Chow Tsz-Lok fell and at last passed away, to commemorate him and 15-year-old Chan Yin-lam, who studied in the area and was found clothless and dead in the waters. Chow and Chan, as two out of other deceased in the pro-democracy movement, were alleged victims of police brutality.

The altar was previously destroyed by unknown people and riot police for several times, but was rebuilt by Tseung Kwan O residents.

On 21 March, residents found that the altar was on fire at around 5a.m. Since the weather has been humid with rain these days, it is suspected that someone intentionally set the altar on fire.

On 8 Nov 2019, 22-year-old university student Chow Tsz-Lok fell from Sheung Tak Car Park, alleged an aftermath of police brutality.

Student Union of Chow’s school, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (“HKUST”) had initially organised a memorial ceremony on 8 May 2020 which marks the 6th month of his death.

However, the university sent an email to all students and teachers today, warning that any event held within the school’s compound violating social distancing rule is illegal. The school will report to the relevant government department and penalise students and teachers flouting the rule. Moreover, the school also broadcasted warnings over the public announcement system on the social distancing rule in Cantonese, English and Mandarin. Hence, students who had initially intended to pay tribute to Chow were unable to stay for long.

Large groups of citizens also paid tribute to him in various other locations, such as Tseung Kwan O, Yuen Long and Mongkok.

Today marks the sixth month anniversary of his death. His loss still cuts deep in the hearts of many of us. We yearn for justice to be done and truth to be revealed. We will never forgive and never forget. We need to press for the truth!

Increasingly, the Hong Kong government has been tightening their grip over pro-democracy activities in past few weeks as the Coronavirus epidemic came under control. Such suppression didn’t stifle protesting activities but sparked even stronger discontent among Hongkongers and sporadic peaceful protests such as “Sing with You” and “Shop with You” spawning in shopping malls have become ubiquitous.

In the afternoon on May 16, netizens initiated a "Shop with You" event in five shopping malls, including East Point City, Yoho Mall, MOKO, New Town City and Olympian City. Soon after peaceful protesters started to chant slogans and sang, riot police charged in to clear shoppers out, sometimes setting cordon lines in the mall, causing even more panic and chaos to both the shoppers and shopkeepers.

Although riot police usually leaves the scene after a while, groups of plainclothes police officers continued to lurk in the mall. In Tseung Kwan O East Point City, 8 civilians were arrested today in the first 30 minutes of the event when there was no sighted complication on the scene. The tension between police and reporters sustained as a plainclothes police officer was seen drawing his baton at a group of reporters at the 1st Floor of the mall in Tseung Kwan O.

In Mong Kok Moko mall and Yuen Long Yoho mall, multiple memos with rhymes and short poems jabbing the police force for the recent incident of police officers arrested with methemphethamines have been attached to the railings for passers-by to read.

What did the IPCC report tell us about the Yuen Long incident on July 21 2019?

When citizens were attacked by white-clad gangsters in Yuen Long on July 21, 2019, many victims and witnesses of the brutality condemned the police for turning a blind eye. Not only that the police station was shut early, but the police hotline was also not answered.

Watch video here.

The police watchdog's report, however, blamed the influx of phone calls to the police hotline as “irresponsible and damaging, an apparent attempt to paralyses the Emergency Communications Center”

District Councilor criticizes police for hindering investigation not admitting mistakes

Police revealed that the Coroner's Court has made a preliminary decision to inquest into Chow Tzs-lok’s death, who fell from height in a carpark in Tseung Kwan O last November.

The police showed on its social media platform a letter addressed to Tsuen Wan District Councilor Lester Sham, which condemned Sham’s column article published on Inmediahongkong.com on May 9 for making groundless and slanderous accusation about the police force for murdering Chow Tzs-lok. The force expressed outrage and disappointment, pointing out that the article was inducing revenge and inciting violence. It warned Sham of legal actions possible.

Sham defied the accusation on his Facebook, stating that he genuinely believed that the Hong Kong Police Force had murdered Chow. He further criticized police for hindering investigation and refused to admit to an apparent blunder. Sham opinioned that the police was too desperate to cover up the truth that they went all the way to wage war with those who detested their behavior.
