"Beijing is curtailing Hong Kong People's Rights and Liberty" -
Pence Stands with Hong Kong Protests in China-Politics Speech

Mike Pence stated that Hong Kong is a living example of what can happen when China embraces liberty, but China had increased its interventions in Hong Kong to curtail the rights and liberties that Hong Kong people should have. He stated that millions of Hong Kong people were getting out and having peaceful protests in the streets, and America is standing with Hong Kong people, noticeably with President Donald Trump clearly stating that the movements in Hong Kong must be handled in a humane way, and urging China to respect the “Sino-British Joint Declaration” signed in 1984. Pence welcomed the withdrawal of amendment on the Extradition Bill which sparked the wave of protests and the restraint action from Beijing. “We stand with you, and we are inspired by you,” Pence said. He urged Hong Kong People to stay on the path of non-violent protests.

Pence also mentioned the controversy started by the tweet by NBA Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey in which he expressed his support to the Hong Kong protests. Pence criticized that the Chinese Communist Party is attempting to influence freedom of speech in America by performing speech censorship, and also criticized the NBA League for “kneeling down” to the CCP and siding with China to silence free speech, acting like a “wholly owned subsidiary of the authoritarian regime”. He also criticized Nike for promotiny itself as a so-called social justice champion, yet it buried its social conscience when facing the Hong Kong problem and removing Rockets merchandise.

Apart from the Hong Kong issue, Pence also mentioned other sensitive “core benefits" topics such as the US-China Trade War, Taiwan, Tibet, and Xinjiang issues.

USA Defence Authorisation Act requires submission of China Interference Report within 45 days after Taiwan Presidential Election

Summary: the joint Houses agreed version of the National Defence Authorisation Act for the fiscal year 2020 have strengthened provisions to monitor CCP’s influences in Taiwan presidential election and strengthening up Taiwan’s capacity to identity, detect and disrupt malign interferences from China.

(Editor’s note: The NDAA also put Chinese overseas investment, including One Road One Belt Initiative, the digital Silk Road or physical infrastructure projects of China into the scope, requiring an assessment of whether China may turn these investments or projects into military assets that may affect US national security.)

US Congress announced an agreed version of the National Defence Authorisation Act for fiscal year 2020 (NDAA) on 9 Dec. Under the NDAA, the Director of Counterintelligence and Security Center shall submit a report regarding China interferences or destructive acts done to meddle Taiwan election and the efforts done by the United States to prevent such actions by the Communist Party (CCP) no later than 45 days after the election of President and Vice President.

The Senate and House Armed Services Committees (the Committees) jointly announced that they have reached agreements regarding the NDAA for fiscal year 2020. The Act relates to the appropriation of budget for the Department of Defence and Department of Energy national security programs in the coming financial year. The Committees released an executive summary and the full Congress report. The Bill is waiting to be voted for passing and signed to become effective by President Trump. USA media expected the Bill will be passed in this week.

In matters relating to China, Section 5511 requires submission of an annual report on intelligence operations and campaigns in the United States by CCP. Section 5512 requires report on the repression of ethnic Muslim minorities in Xinjiang. Section 5513 requires report on efforts and actions by CCP to influence Taiwan election.

The report should cover a description of any significant efforts by the intelligence community to coordinate technical and material support for Taiwan to identify, disrupt, and combat influence operations by China and how United States Government help Taiwan to build the capacity to disrupt external efforts that degrade a free and fair election process. The report should also have an assessment on details of China influence activities and a comprehensive list of specific governmental and non-governmental entities of China that were involved in such activities and a description of the role of each entity; and any tactics, techniques, and procedures used in such operations.

The above requirements are consistent with what being laid down in the Intelligence Authorisation Act of the House Armed Services Committee but not previously contained in the Senate and House Armed Services Committees’ version. The addition of these specific requirements to strengthen the protection of Taiwan by both the Committees reveals that the US Congress is very concerned about Taiwan President election.

Apart from these sections, other parts of the NDAA that are relevant to Taiwan include Section 1260 B, C and D that cover cyber security, USA-Taiwan Relationship and engagement of USA-Taiwan Defence relationship.

In terms of cyber security, the Secretary of Defence shall submit to the congressional defence committees a report on matters relating to the feasibility of establishing a high-level, interagency United States-Taiwan working group for coordinating responses to emerging issues related to cyber security; discussion of the Department of Defence’s current and future plans to engage with Taiwan in cybersecurity activities and the obstacles encountered in forming, executing, or implementing agreements with Taiwan for cyber security activities not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of the NADD Act.
In regard to the USA-Taiwan relationship, the Secretary of Defence, in coordination with the Secretary of State, shall conduct a review of whether the China or the CCP are affecting Taiwan through any means, including through military, economic, information, digital, diplomatic, or any other form of coercion that may affect the security, or the social and economic system of the people of Taiwan; the military balance of power between China and Taiwan; or the expectation that the future of Taiwan will continue to be determined by peaceful means.

The provisions in relation to USA-Taiwan Defence relationship include support Taiwan to acquire defence articles and services through military sales, exchange in defence staff officers, and expanding cooperation in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, disaster response planning and preparedness. The Secretary of Defence should continue regular transits of United States Navy vessels through the Taiwan Strait and encourage allies and partners to follow suit.

It is no surprise that President Donald Trump’s new policy to control “birth tourism’’ has gained public support.

Under President Trump’s new regulation, consular officers have the ability to deny visas to pregnant women hoping to give birth in U.S. hospitals. The White House likely got its inspiration from a place - Hong Kong, that implemented the exact same policy a few years back.

Since the handover, Mainlanders now make up close to one-fifth of Hong Kong’s 7.5 million population, due to Beijing's near total control over the number of immigration permits out to Mainlanders and large number of pregnant Mainland women using this loophole to gain birthright citizenships.

These newborns then get granted a citizenship from the country of birth, which in turn creates a huge pressure on the local welfare, medical care, education system and so on.

But after years of stories in the media about local hospitals being overcrowded by Mainland would-be mothers, the Hong Kongers decided that they have finally had enough, and in 2010, local residents took to the streets in protest. This resulted in Hong Kong government implementing a law in 2010, denying entry to pregnant Mainland women failing to show proof of obstetric appointments in the city and jailing those caught making false claims about their intentions at the border.

Few in the world today know the sanctity of national sovereignty and self-rule like the people of Hong Kong. Every day, the working class and the middle-class Hong Kongers feel the effects of their nation’s quality of life by an extremely flawed immigration system, which unfortunately, is almost completely out of their control.

This is what birthright citizenship is doing in the U.S. It removes from American citizens their sovereign choice over who and how many can enter the country. The president has taken one small but important step in restoring that.

Stay at home

Tarek (@terek1_1_1) shared his story of contracting COVID-19 in the USA on Instagram. He originally thought he had caught a normal cold, but the virus progressed rapidly within 5 days, to the point where he fainted at the clinic and was sent to hospital. After running some tests for 12 hours, he was sent home, being instructed to only take Tylenol (a pain/fever medication). After 4 days his test results came back positive. He soon developed pneumonia and struggled to breath normally even after the fever died away, thus having to visit the emergency room again.
Tarek believes that the healthcare system in USA is ill-equipped for this epidemic and is not providing sufficient treatment to COVID-19 patients. He asks his followers to “be responsible and stay home” to avoid contracting the coronavirus.

Washington Sanctions HK and Chinese Officials

The United States has imposed sanctions on Hong Kong officials, including the city's pro-China leader Carrie Lam, for being directly responsible for implementing the national security law, working with the Chinese Communist Party in undermining the autonomy and cracking down on the freedoms in Hong Kong.

The US Treasury Department said the sanctions on Lam and 10 other officials were authorised by an executive order signed recently by the President of the United States, Donald Trump.

One of the results of this action is that blocks all property and/or other assets that the individuals have within US jurisdiction.

In the midst of this, the US is also seeking to ban several Chinese social media services due to security reasons. There is also a tariff war going on between US and China over Beijing's technological ambitions.
