Beijing Loyalist 'Teaches' Disqualified Lawmakers How to 'Whitewash' Themselves

On November 13, 2020, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (#CPPCC) Hong Kong members formed "Friends of Hong Kong Association" and held a press conference, with a claim to support the National People’s Congress (#NPC) as well as the Hong Kong government to disqualify the 4 LegCo councilors.

The Chairman of the Association, also a Standing Committee Member of the CPPCC National Committee, Henry Tang Ying-yen criticized the four disqualified as openly promoting “Hong Kong Independence” and demanding the U.S. to put sanctions on China and Hong Kong.

However, Tang also suggested that the disqualified persons could send letters to the U.S., including publicly declaring regret for the past actions, withdrawing their speeches and asking the U.S. government to withdraw sanctions, may able to be “whitewashed” and become a candidate in future election.

#Poll: 96% of the pro-democracy respondents and 44% Non-democrat Supporters See Police Arrest of RTHK Producer a Political Prosecution

Between November 9-12, 2020, the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#HKPORI) has conducted an online survey with 4,489 individuals, on whether the police arrest of Bao Choy Yuk-Ling, an editor-director of the Radio Television Hong Kong (#RTHK), was politically motivated.

Results show that 96% of the pro-democracy respondents and 44% of non-democratic camp supporters agreed that the arrest was politically motivated.

Dr. Benson Wong, the Honorary Director from the “We HongKongers” initiative, found the results rather surprising. He said that when the non-democrats were asked to answer controversial questions, they tend to respond with “I don't know", but only 2% of respondents chose this answer in this survey.

Wong believed that this means “they know what they are responding to”.

Dr. Wan Kwok-Fai, a senior lecturer of the Department of Journalism and Communication at the Hong Kong Shue Yan University, admitted that the opinions of the non-democrats were "more difficult to grasp". He believed that perhaps 44% of respondents did not consider the connection between the 7.21 Yuen Long Triad Attack and Bao Choy herself, but rather the need for the government to "handle" the public broadcaster RTHK "politically".

This therefore led to different interpretations of the question, resulting in the lack of a clear trend in the survey results.

Wan stated that the arrest was a political retaliation on journalists. He is worried that this would further restrict the survival of online media and citizen reporters.

Protest Sign: "Popo, Congrats! You finally managed to go into university and work in Central"

One of the most memorable protest signs was seen in Central, Hong Kong's financial hub on November 13th, 2019 .

It turns out that the Hong Kong police managed to “get into” not just one, but two universities.

*Editor's note: The sign was held up in mockery of the Hong Kong police’s actions on teargassing Central, as well as charging into university campuses, Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) and Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU) in November 2019.

Canada Provides Measures to Encourage Hongkongers migrating, Scholars: Canadian Government Given up to Fawn China

The Canadian government issued a statement, indicated that in response to the push of Hong Kong version of the National Security Law from China, they would provide several convenient measures for Hongkongers to migrate to Canada. The measures include providing working visa to Hong Kong university graduates to facilitate their permanent resident application in the future, and introducing measures to expedite the permanent resident applications to encourage more Hong Kong teenagers to study and to work in Canada. These actions bound to increase tensions in the already bad Canada-China relation. The spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Canada emphasized that the issues of membership of the Hong Kong Legislative Council are purely an internal affair of China. They also urged Canada to abide by international law and basic norms of international relations with an immediate stop of interfering in Hong Kong affairs.

When an Associate Professor of Department of Political Science in the National University of Singapore, Chong Ja Ian, said in an analysis of Apple Daily, this action indicated that Canada has already given up to fawn China. “It will pressure you no matter fawning it or not, so there is no worry at all.” Chong also stated that Canada may still have hopes and attitudes to cooperate with China before, so they hesitated for a while, then introduced these measures after the implementation of “Hong Kong version of National Security Law”. But when Canada saw China’s disagreement with many countries internationally, the Canadian government has given up making concessions. “The problem is, besides of giving in, what can make China happy?”

WHO drops censorship of words “Taiwan” and “China” on social media after backlash

Internet users began reporting this week that WHO’s Facebook page would not allow to leave comment including the word of “Taiwan”. Taiwan’s foreign ministry said the block ran contrary to the neutrality of the WHO.

A spokesman for the WHO explained that the social media team applied filters as the “onslaught” hindered its ability moderate conversations. After lifting the block, the WHO’s page was flooded with pro-Taiwan and anti-China message.

The WHO’s history with Taiwan has been controversial, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. China has blocked its admission to the WHA despite an increase in international support for their inclusion.

Chinese Foreign Ministry says Pompeo has "Sinister Motives" and Will Fight Back Firmly after Pompeo says Taiwan Is Not Part of China,

In a radio interview yesterday (12th), the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said "Taiwan has never been a part of China" and that the US commitment to Taiwan was already a cross-party consensus. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a regular press conference today (13th) that Pompeo had ignored the fundamental interests of the Chinese and American peoples for his political self-interest, confusing right with wrong and fabricating lies in order to mislead public opinion and disrupt the public perceptions, further damage China-US relations and jeopardise peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He added, "The world has known his sinister intentions". Wang Wenbin told the followers of Pompeo that any act that undermines the core interests of China and interferes in Chinese internal affairs will get a resolute response from China, and will not stop its historical trend of unification.

Taiwan's presidential spokesman, Chang Tun-Han, also responded to the incident this morning (13 November), noting that he had noticed the remarks from Pompeo and that it was an indisputable fact that the Republic of China is a sovereign state. On the cross-strait and region, Taiwan has always advocated that the two sides of the Strait should work together to safeguard the status quo of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, based on the principle of reciprocity and dignity. Taiwan will also continue to fulfil its international obligations and contribute to the peace, stability and prosperity of the Taiwan Strait and the region.
