#1873: Happy to announce that I got my first part-time internship at a startup!!

Y2 CS student here who doesn't have really good grades/past internship experiences. Landing my first internship was difficult, and it's really a catch-22 situation - I can't land an internship because I don't have past internship experience. Fortunately, I found a company that was willing to give me a chance. It didn't come easy for me. It took me around half a year to build up a decent enough portfolio. I did several udemy courses to learn full-stack development (react and nodejs) and did 2 web dev side projects which I deployed and linked to in my resume. Many, many inte

#1906: Bad at CS but like CS?

anyone here whose CAP is not the best but genuinely enjoy CS? :') that's me haha

I think I'm bad at taking exams and cramming so much info in just 13 weeks and I think im just not as smart as many of my peers :// However, I genuinely like and am interested in what im studying in CS (not just in it for the $$$) and want to remain in the tech industry doing work related to software / data engineering...

friends and all saying drop out of cs to another computing course and self learn CS stuff but I don't think I'm as interested in other courses like IS / BZA...

[POLL] #1935: What’s a good CAP for CS?

As the tittle asks, I’m curious to know what people consider to be a good CAP.
And also what CAP range do companies actually consider?

Options:
1. 5.0-4.5
2. 4.4-4.0

#1956: Should I feel guilty wanting to work for social media companies like tiktok/fb

Just watched a youtube video about how usage of social media can change someone's brain. Like it causes someone to be less able to focus, and to be more anxious. And I think this is somewhat true? After cutting my usage I do feel mentally healthier. As a CS student, it's normal to aim for FAANG companies and other big tech like tiktok, but I am starting to wonder about the impact I am going to have on the world. Is it wrong to chase after these companies?

#1964: Tier List for tech internship

If you don't mind, please share your Tier List for tech internship, ranking in terms of mentorship, working culture, experience, learning opportunities :)

Previous summer I joined a company but it did not possess any of these attributes, so I am curious of what other companies are out there that are worth applying to. (Other than FAANG and HFT)

#1966: Companies that people won't feel guilty joining just for the package

Following up from #1956, what are some of the top companies where people won't feel guilty joining just for the package then?

[POLL] #1973: What's most important for you as a CS student?

There's been a lot of discussion here about internships and CAP, and I'm curious how people tend to value these relative to each other. Not implying that you can't have internships as well as a strong CAP, but more like:

On a resume, what would you be most impressed by?

Options:
1. Good CAP
2. Past internships
3. Projects
4. Open-source contributions
5. Research
6. Others

#2067: I think im going to die for 3203

already tried to prepare for this mod over winter by learning the basic syntax of C++, but just realized that I actually know nothing about C++. I spent 1 day trying to setup the sample project but still have no idea what's going on like what is cmake and all the weird C++ class syntax like virtual/volatile???? really don't have a good feeling about this mod like we are expect to learn so many things on our own. sorry to my teammates in advance :(

#2092: I am going to die for capstone

first-timer here, I need advice on whether I should drop my capstone module and appeal for another 4 mc module concurrently on modreg before tuesday. As it sounds, capstone sounds scary already. After attending the very first lecture of the capstone, I feel lost. I tried researching on the topic of wearable AR laser tag game (topic for the capstone) and still feeling the same, making me rather demoralised. Reason why I am holding on to this module was I could not get the other modules I bid for during round 2/3. I plan to take CS3230 if I have to drop capstone as it is a 8 MCs mod. I am not prepared for CS3230 eith

#2128: ByteDance New Grad SWE Level

Are new grads able to get swe level 2-1 in bytedance, or only 1-2? If so, what are the requirements? Returning interns? Masters?

#2148: Nervous about being a TA

Signed up to be a TA for this sem and with tutorials starting next week, I am kinda feeling quite nervous about it. I am trying to prep for the tutorial 1 week in advance to make sure I am well-prepared for the first lesson, but the thought of not being a good enough TA makes me feel nervous for the class. Any tips?? what else can I do to feel more confident and be a good TA that my students can respect and learn from

#2177: Does FAANG and other US companies hire people who worked at US sanctioned companies?

I have been on a job search and found that some of the applications ask you to fill in whether you are from certain sanctioned countries like Iran, Syria, etc. Most of these are US/Europe companies. I think this is due to the political turmoil and the economic sanctions that almost every country imposed on them.

On a second thought, there are certain Chinese companies, e.g. Huawei, Sensetime, etc, are also on US sanction list because they are alleged to break certain laws or other political reasons. Some of these companies also have a quite large office in Sing

#2202: Is there a consolidated document with internship application timelines for most of the major companies?

If there isn't already an existing document, I think it would be pretty useful for a lot of us if this could be put together. :)

#2264: Meta/FB Foreigner Policy

Heard that meta/fb will straight away reject/ignore applicants who are non sc/pr, for both fulltime roles and internships, no matter how good they are. Is that true? If yes, why? This does not seem to happen in other firms.

#2292: NCS Software Engineer Internship?

There's a negative stigma around NCS, mayI know why is that so?

Would you be able to takeway anything from interning there? Or do they make you do free labor?

Don't know if I should accept it...

[POLL] #2311: What role/offer to choose as a new graduate who intend to switch to a product/project management role in future? BE @ Alibaba or DevOps @ Tencent

Hi,

I am a fresh graduate in Singapore and have 2 offers on hand.

1) DevOps by Tencent
2) Backend Developer by Alibaba.

Total Compensation is roughly the same for both offers
but
Tencent total package is only slightly higher but the RSUs portion of Alibaba package is slightly higher compared to its base salary.

In future, I highly see myself switching to a leadership/ management and not continue in the similar technical coding role.

Which offer should I choose?

1.

#2339: CS2030S and CS2103T should move to .NET and C#.

C# is Java with sex appeal:

LINQ is the best thing since sliced bread. Arrow functions are super neat, no cancerous functional interfaces. No need to learn about type erasure, since the .NET CLR doesn't erase types. Top-level statements; type inference with var; extension methods; getters/setters are one-worders; so much syntactic sugar; there are struct types; one can screw around with pointer arithmetic if one so wishes to, parallelisation is easy.

[POLL] #2399: What role/offer to choose as a new graduate who intend to switch to a product/project management role in future?

Hi,

I am a fresh graduate in Singapore and have 2 offers on hand.

1) Site Reliability Engineer by Bytedance
2) Backend Engineer by Sea Ltd.

Total Compensation is higher by bytedance.

In future, I highly see myself switching to a PM role.

Which offer should I choose?

I like backend role more but bytedance has much more kick to its name and more annual compensation.

But backend role is more versatile and seems more PM are ex-backend than ex-SRE

#2468: why is my CS teammates so anti social

I studied w my biz friend recently and I realised that the group dynamics when biz ppl do project work tgt is so different. everyone turns on their camera and contributes actively. It feels a lot more fun? On the other hand, this is how project group meetings in CS usually goes: everyone doesn't want to turn on their camera, even when I take the initiative to turn mine on. Then everyone is just waiting for one another to talk. I usually have to wait for a solid few mins before anyone starts talking. no one wants to step up and lead the discussion. during meetings there will always be very long pauses, and id

#2538: SG tech startup culture still has a long way to go?

From what I know, sg startups really pale in comparison to US SV startups. In the same series (e.g. Series A), the kind of money SG startups raise seem minuscule compared to US startups, and it just seems like sg startups are growing at a much slower pace. I think there is also really a stark contrast in terms of engineering talent. US startups are willing to pay big money for good engineers coming from the top schools (maybe because they raise more money?), and it seems like SG startups are just looking for cheap labour and they hire pretty unimpressive people. not many people in NUS CS would
