🔆 Battle of Saragarhi (1897) – A Tale of Bravery

📍 Context
✅ Punjab declared September 12 as Saragarhi Day in 2017 to honor the battle.

📍 Battle Overview
✅ 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikhs (now 4 Sikh regiment) led by Havildar Ishar Singh defended Saragarhi post against 8,000 Afridi and Orakzai militants.
✅ Despite being heavily outnumbered, they fought for seven hours, killing 200 and injuring 600, before making the ultimate sacrifice.

📍 Strategic Importance
✅ Saragarhi served as a communication post between Fort Lockhart & Fort Gulistan (housed British troops).
✅ Located in the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) (now Pakistan), originally built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, later renamed by the British.

📍 Honors & Recognition
✅ Queen Victoria awarded the Indian Order of Merit (similar to the Victoria Cross) to all 21 soldiers, an unprecedented honor.
