[Week 6] The Joys of Meditation

What do you know about meditation? Is it only practised by monks? Are you only supposed to "empty the mind" while meditating?

Not quite, meditation is a practice all can benefit from. Rather than just "emptying the mind", Buddhist meditation encompasses various practices aimed at developing tranquillity, insight, and other qualities such as loving-kindness, with mindfulness being a crucial component in many of these practices.

Join us this Wednesday for a physical guide to meditation, and learn about how the mindfulness habits you cultivate during meditation can be translated into everyday life.

[Special] Living with Integrity: An Ethical Lay Life

In the hustle and bustle of our modern day life, how can one maintain an virtuous and ethical life? Designed for all laypeople, the five precepts — refraining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech, and intoxicants — serve as practical tools for cultivating integrity and morality. While making an effort to observe the precepts benefits the people around us, the main beneficiary is ultimately ourselves, as they help us to live a more compassionate and wholesome life.

SMUDC is once again happy to invite Ven. Thubten Damcho to share about the topic, a Buddhist nun from the Tibetan tradition who was born and raised in Singapore.

Let's end the year by sharing and learning together about how ethical living can lead to a more harmonious relationship with ourselves and the people around us.

[Week 2] Emotional Management with Buddhism

We often face difficult emotions in life, be it due to external events or internal turmoil. In response, we wish for negative emotions to disappear while chasing after positive emotions. However, often times we realise that trying to push emotions away only exacerbates them. Instead, the practice of mindfulness enables us to observe emotions without judgement, lessening their hold over us.

For example, instead of thinking “I am angry”, we can reframe it as “Anger is present”, thereby recognising the impermanent nature of such emotions, and that we are much, much more than our emotions.

Through mindfulness and self-compassion, our session this coming Wednesday discusses how we can co-exist peacefully with our emotions, cultivating inner calm and balance.

In celebration of CNY, we'll also be having some snacks for the festivities! 🎉🥳

[Week 4] Transforming Hatred into Loving-Kindness

Buddhism offers much pragmatic wisdom that is useful to all, showing us a life with lesser greed and hatred, and one with more generosity and loving-kindness. As the 14th Dalai Lama said, "Do not try to use what you learn from Buddhism to be a Buddhist; use it to be a better whatever-you-already-are."

Embracing the impermanent and interdependent nature of reality, Buddhist philosophy teaches us how to look at the world and the people around us differently, to free ourselves from the expectations, hatred, and grudges we hold ourselves prisoners to—to live a life filled with equanimity, loving-kindness, joy, and compassion.

Join us this sharing to learn how you can use the Buddhist lens to understand and navigate difficult relationships, to transform hatred into loving-kindness, for the sake of mental well-being of yourself and the people around you.

[Week 5] Wholesome Leadership, Strong Communities

In our lives, some of us formally step into leadership roles, while others may not. Yet, in our interconnected world, we all influence those around us—through our actions, decisions, and the way we navigate challenges. Leadership isn’t just about holding a title; it’s about shaping our environment and the well-being of those we interact with.

Buddhist teachings offer timeless wisdom on cultivating wholesome leadership—one rooted in wisdom, kindness, and ethical integrity - guiding us to create positive ripple effects that help individuals and communities flourish.

Join us as we explore Buddhist perspectives on leadership and discover how ancient wisdom can empower us to nurture thriving, harmonious communities.

[Week 6] Let's Talk Faith! The Buddha's Approach

What role does faith play in Buddhism—a path often described as empirical and investigative?

Join us this week for a cosy discussion on the Buddha’s unique perspective on faith (saddhā) through personal stories and reflections.

The Buddha encouraged us to test and verify his teachings—much like a goldsmith tests gold. Together, we’ll see how this approach strengthens spiritual practice while keeping a questioning mind, as taught in the Kalama Sutta.

[Week 10] Is your life on Autopilot? Rethink: Karma

Is our life dictated by fate, or do we have the power to shape our future? In Buddhism, the concept of karma helps us understand how our intentions and actions influence our present and future experiences. Far from being just a law of retribution, karma is dynamic, evolving with every choice we make.

Join us as we explore:
⚡️ Action or Fate? – Are we bound by our past, or can we change our future?
🌱 Making Better Choices – How skillful actions impact our daily lives.
🛤 Breaking the Cycle – Using the Eightfold Path to free ourselves from negative patterns.

Look forward to a beginner friendly session to reflect and learn more about karma!

[Week 12] How to Cope When a Loved One Dies

The death of a loved one is one of the truths of life we all have to face some day.

Join us this coming Thursday for a sharing on the passing of our loved ones, as we reflect together on how to properly handle and process grief. Buddhism teaches us to not be afraid of such matters as impermanence is a fact of life that affects all things, including grief itself. Through learning about impermanence and wisely navigating it with compassion, we learn to better appreciate our loved ones when they are still alive and accept their passing with peace.

The speaker, Venerable Shi You Wei, is a local monastic and the current abbot-in-charge of Di Zang Lin. He has given many Buddhist talks, engaging with the local and youth community through podcasts such as The Daily Ketchup.
