Did you know that the smallest numbers ๐Ÿ”ข can sometimes make the biggest difference ๐Ÿ’ฏ?

According to #NUSComputingโ€™s prof Hahn Jungpil when values are missing from a dataset ๐Ÿ“Š, things get problematic, and this is especially pertinent in an age of big data.

From potentially unfair reviews to inaccurate financial data, the effect of missing values is often overlooked ๐Ÿค”.

In a paper published by the Information Systems Research journal, prof Hahn Jungpil and his colleague, associate prof Huang Ke-Wei examine the challenges posed by missing values and other various solutions.

What do dinosaurs ๐Ÿฆ– and Nintendo Wii game controllers ๐ŸŽฎ have in common?

They are all products of exaptation, a process of repurposing products for functions other than their original purpose ๐Ÿ’ก.

And this is what inspired #NUSComputingโ€™s Asst. Prof Lim Shi Ying and Emory Universityโ€™s Chan Tian Heong to analyse ๐Ÿ”ฌ what members of the IKEA Hackers community are doing.

The results of their study have since been published in Management Science journal ๐Ÿ“š and prompted others to take a closer look at the problem-first approach.

The Internet of Things (IoT) ๐ŸŒ has enabled us to connect with the world around us, unlike ever before.

But, according to #NUSComputingโ€™s Asst. Prof. Ambuj Varshney, IoT devices are energy-expensive โšก๏ธ and require frequent battery replacements ๐Ÿ”‹. This makes such devices costly and harmful to the environment.

Along with University of California, Berkeleyโ€™s Associate Professor Prabal Dutta and Yan Wenqing, a Ph.D. student at Uppsala University, Asst. Prof. Varshney has published a paper titled: โ€œJudo: addressing the energy asymmetry of wireless embedded systems through tunnel diode based wireless transmitters.โ€

This represents a new step towards making battery-free devices a reality which would help make IoT devices smaller and more sustainable ๐ŸŒณ.

โ€œOur goal is to give students experiences they can relate to. The more meaningful their experiences are, the more effective the learning can be.โ€

This is the driving force behind Source Academy, the flagship teaching tool of CS1101S: Programming Methodology ๐ŸŒ.

Together with fellow lecturers Dr Boyd Anderson, Dr Low Kok Lim, and Dr Sanka Rasnayaka, #NUSComputingโ€™s Associate Professor Martin Henz wants to give students the opportunity to contextualise their programming skills ๐Ÿ’ป in real-time.

We are pleased to announce that Professor Reza Shokri and his team have been honoured with the prestigious Best Paper Award at the 6th annual ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency (ACM FAccT) in Chicago! ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ‘

The insightful paper, "On The Impact of Machine Learning Randomness on Group Fairness," was the collaborative effort of MComp graduate Prakhar Ganesh, PhD students Hongyan Chang and Martin Strobel, and our very own Prof. Reza Shokri. ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ“

Their pioneering research delves into the world of machine learning, unraveling how randomness in data order during training affects group fairness. Their insights are especially crucial for minority groups, who face higher prediction uncertainty. The team also introduced a novel data ordering technique that bolsters model fairness! ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ก

๐ŸŒ With advanced AI tools๐Ÿค–, scammers can now mimic voices and create realistic videos to trick unsuspecting victims. ๐Ÿšจ

When interviewed by the Straits Times, #NUSComputing's Associate Professor Terence Sim emphasized the dangers, stating, "When a victim sees a video of a friend or a loved one, he tends to believe that it is real and that they are in need of help. There is an increased level of believability and deception behind such scams." ๐Ÿ˜ง

Additionally, #NUSComputing's Professor Hahn Jungpil in an interview with Lianhe Zaobao, added his insights by saying, "Consumers should generally be more skeptical and vigilant.โ€

โ€œA certain level of skepticism will help consumers tune into subtle visual and auditory anomalies that may suggest that the content they are seeing is indeed a deepfake.โ€
