The next time you use your digital camera 📸, spare a thought for the late Dr. Sung Kah Kay (middle, in white).
Dr. Sung — Singaporean son and former Assistant Professor at #NUSComputing, created the face-detection algorithm used by digital cameras. It analyzes digital images to determine which pixels form a human face and is the reason why faces appear sharp in photos.
He invented this in 1996 for his Ph.D. thesis at MIT, but digital cameras only started to incorporate face detection 9 years later. Tragically, in a perverse twist of fate, Dr. Sung was killed when flight SQ 006 crashed at Taipei’s airport on the typhoon-battered night of 31st October 2000.

They are all products of exaptation, a process of repurposing products for functions other than their original purpose 💡.
And this is what inspired #NUSComputing’s Asst. Prof Lim Shi Ying and Emory University’s Chan Tian Heong to analyse 🔬 what members of the IKEA Hackers community are doing.
The results of their study have since been published in Management Science journal 📚 and prompted others to take a closer look at the problem-first approach.

#NUSComputing’s Asst Prof Yang You and Ph.D. students with collaborators from Bytedance 🌐, have won the Distinguished Paper award during the 37th Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence Conference (AAAI-23) in Washington, DC, USA.
The group’s paper, titled “CowClip: Reducing CTR Prediction Model Training Time from 12 hours to 10 minutes on 1 GPU,” explores the use of large-batch training to accelerate the training process of CTR prediction systems.
