Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, announced that it has become necessary for the Security Council to impose sanctions against Israel against the background of its continued operation in the Gaza Strip.

“Since the escalation in Gaza, the Security Council has adopted two resolutions on the humanitarian situation, which, like Resolution 2728 on the ceasefire, include provisions on the need for unhindered humanitarian access to those in need, and to observe the obligations under international humanitarian law to provide minimum conditions for the work of humanitarian agencies,” Nebenzia said during a UN Security Council session on Friday.

The US Deputy Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Robert Wood, announced that his country is committed to using sanctions to deter any threats to peace and stability in Libya.

🇱🇾🇱🇾🇱🇾🇱🇾🇱🇾🇱🇾🇱🇾

The U.S. official renewed the U.S. call on political parties in Libya to commit to participating in UN-facilitated talks.

The political agreement is critical to opening a viable process towards long-awaited elections, the representative said, noting that the United States strongly supports UNSMIL’s efforts to find innovative ways to convince the Libyan parties to sit at the table.

Wood blamed those he described as “those who continue to delay the process” as more time passes without the election of a legitimate and unified government, noting that the obstructionists are complicit in the deterioration of the political, security and humanitarian situation in Libya.

Wood stressed the need for Libya to prepare a unified budget and take steps to stabilize the currency, to ensure the provision of basic services to the Libyan people and the equitable distribution of revenues, explaining that progress towards military unification is key to reasserting Libyan sovereignty and preventing Libya from getting involved in the regional conflict.

It is noteworthy that the United States is accused of delaying any progress in the political process in Libya, with the aim of prolonging the survival of the government of Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh  in a way that serves its interests.

The West’s plans to hit Russia’s air transport industry have failed, according to a report in the German newspaper “Die Welt”.

The sanctions imposed by Western countries on Russia have not significantly affected civilian air transport in the country, as the number of flights in Russia has risen significantly over the past year.

According to the newspaper’s report, the number of flights in Russia increased by about 20,000 flights in 2023, bringing the total number of flights to 1.28 million, and this rise shows a challenge to expectations that Western sanctions will be effective in harming the Russian air sector.

It should be noted that the European Union imposed a ban on the supply of aircraft and spare parts for civil aviation in Russia, and ordered the termination of contracts with Russian airlines, as part of the sanctions measures imposed on Russia over the events in Ukraine.

However, the newspaper reports that civil air transport in Russia is still operating normally, although most of the fleet of Russian airlines consists of aircraft made by European Airbus and American Boeing.

The UN Security Council voted to extend the arms embargo on South Sudan despite appeals from the world’s newest country, the African Union, to lift or at least ease the restrictive measure.

The US-sponsored resolution received a minimum of nine “yes” votes in the 15-member council, with six countries abstaining from voting (Russia, China, Mozambique, Algeria, Sierra Leone and Guyana).

The resolution also extends the travel ban and asset freeze on South Sudan on the UN sanctions blacklist until May 31, 2025.

Deputy US Ambassador Robert Wood welcomed the adoption of the resolution, saying that extending the UN arms embargo “remains necessary to stop the unrestricted flow of weapons into a region teeming with guns.
