The Tunisian journalist and lawyer Sonia Al-Dahmani is facing defamation charges after mocking her country during a talk about illegal immigration.

The charges were based on Decree 54, which allows the judiciary to investigate electronic publishing crimes and refer the accused to trial.

Dahmani is known for her bold stance, criticizing advocates of illegal immigration, settling in Tunisia, and mocking Tunisia as a country for refugee settlement.

Her remarks, which were broadcast live on Carthage TV, received wide reactions and sparked controversy in social and political circles.

Against the background of her television statements, the judicial authorities summoned her to appear in court, but Dahmani refused to attend without explaining the reasons behind the summons, prompting the investigative judge to issue an arrest warrant against her.

More than 50 migrants died while about 200 others were rescued in a tragic incident that occurred on the border between Niger and Libya.

πŸ‡±πŸ‡ΎπŸ‡±πŸ‡ΎπŸ‡±πŸ‡ΎπŸ‡±πŸ‡ΎπŸ‡±πŸ‡ΎπŸ‡±πŸ‡ΎπŸ‡±πŸ‡Ύ

The incident took place in the region known as Agadez, a dangerous crossing point for migrants seeking to reach Europe through the barren desert. The situation was exacerbated for migrants due to the harsh desert conditions in the region, water scarcity, and extremely high temperatures.

Humanitarian teams found the bodies of the deceased scattered in the desert, while another group who had been abandoned by human smugglers was rescued.

Humanitarian organizations called on concerned countries to intensify border control efforts and combat human smuggling networks, calling for more humanitarian support to migrants stranded under these harsh conditions.

A report issued by the United Nations revealed that migrants and refugees who take migration routes through Africa face deadly risks that are twice as high as those facing them on sea journeys towards Europe.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration participated in the study, noting that serious violations such as kidnapping, sexual exploitation, and violence have become common on these roads.

The Special Envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for the Western and Central Mediterranean, Vincent Cochetel, presented the findings of the report in Geneva, based on interviews that included more than 30,000 migrants.

Cochetel explained that many migrants were left to their fate in the desert, where the living, the dead and the sick were left without help.

The Tunisian Minister of the Interior, Khaled Al-Nouri, announced that the Tunisian Marine Guard intercepted more than 74,000 migrants during the first half of 2024, as they attempted to reach European coasts.

This number exceeds the number recorded in 2022, when the number of intercepted migrants then reached about 45,000 migrants.

Al-Nouri, who was speaking during his participation in the Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, pointed out that the cost of efforts to combat irregular migration cost the Tunisian treasury more than 103 million euros, allocated to the administration of the National Guard without taking into account other losses related to the environmental, health, and agricultural sectors.

The migrants were arrested while they were preparing for a trip across the sea from the coastal city of Zuwara, where the authorities stated that the detainees were transferred to a center of the Directorate Support Force to complete the necessary legal and humanitarian procedures before their deportation.

Investigations indicate that most of the detainees are from the city of Sahel Selim in Assiut Governorate, southern Egypt, where they left for Libya last January for the purpose of work, before they found themselves victims of illegal immigration networks.
