The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs suddenly summoned its ambassador to Chad, Othman Muhammad Yunus, to the ministry’s headquarters in the temporary administrative capital of Port Sudan, according to what the “Sudanese” newspaper reported.

In July 2022, the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Army, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, appointed five retired police and army officers to ambassadorial positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Ambassador Younis.

The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs is being criticized by some observers who see weakness in the performance of some of its ambassadors, especially in important positions.

70 militants from Boko Haram, which is classified as a terrorist organization, were killed during a military operation carried out by the Chadian army in the Lake Chad region.

The operation, known as “Lake Sante 2,” was launched last April, carried out by a “commando” group from the Chadian Rapid Action Force.

The operation, which included joint forces from Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon, resulted in the surrender of a number of militants and the arrest of others, in addition to the dismantling of five camps and the destruction of eight explosive-laden vehicles that were in the possession of the terrorist group.

A Moroccan Court of Appeal upheld a ruling requiring Maroc Telecom to pay compensation amounting to 6.3 billion dirhams, or about 630 million dollars, to its competitor, ‘Inwi’, due to unfair monopolistic practices.

‘Inwi’, the third largest telecommunications operator in the Kingdom, filed the case in 2021, accusing Maroc Telecom of abusing its dominant position in the market.

The fine exceeds Maroc Telecom’s 2023 profits, which amounted to 6.1 billion dirhams, indicating the significant impact of the ruling on the company’s financial performance.

The French authorities have opened a preliminary investigation into accusations of misuse of public funds against the current President of Chad, Mohamed Idriss Deby Itno, as revealed by the French magazine “Jeune Afrique”.

The magazine reported, citing informed sources, that the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office opened the investigation last January, after allegations that Deby spent huge sums of money on purchasing luxury clothes through a registered Chadian company called “MHK Full Business.”

According to the sources, the money was transferred in December 2021 and May 2023 to buy 57 suits worth between 9,000 and 13,000 euros each, in addition to 100 shirts at 800 euros each, and 9 “safari jackets” at 7,500 euros each.

The Chadian court acquitted 15 people accused of involvement in the disturbances that took place at the Chadian intelligence headquarters last February, sentenced four others to ten years in prison, and referred six to the children’s court.

Among those acquitted was Saleh Deby Itno, the immediate uncle of current interim President Mohamed Deby.

The clashes that took place around the intelligence headquarters resulted in the killing of Yahya Dilo, leader of the “Socialist Party Without Borders,” in an attack targeting his party’s headquarters on February 28.

Dilo, who was a potential candidate for the presidential elections, is considered a prominent opponent of the current regime, and the authorities accused him of inciting violence.

Refugee camps in eastern Chad are witnessing a wave of violence that resulted in the killing of a Sudanese refugee woman and a child in separate incidents.

The first incident occurred in Qaqa refugee camp, where Hawa Hussein Adam, a 27-year-old mother of five children, was killed by a stray bullet during an exchange of fire near her home.

The refugee who was inside her home in Block 25 died after being transferred to a health center in the camp, before the medical team arrived to examine her.

In another incident, a 5-year-old child died as a result of the explosion of a “Qarnit” device inside his family’s home in Jabal refugee camp.

The explosion also resulted in the injury of his brother Abdel Moneim, who was transferred to Goz Beida Hospital and then to Abesha Regional Hospital to receive medical care due to his critical condition.

The Chadian ambassador to Russia, Adam Bachir Mahmoud, announced that Chad is working to cancel entry visas for Russian citizens, and these changes may come into effect before the end of 2024.

In a statement to “TASS”, Ambassador Mahmoud said: “We are working to introduce a visa-free regime with Russia,” and he did not rule out that entry visas for Russian citizens traveling to Chad would be canceled before the end of 2024.

The ambassador explained that the decision will first apply to holders of diplomatic and service passports, before including holders of ordinary passports.

In a related context, the Russian Minister of Economic Development, Maxim Reshetnikov, revealed that Russia is preparing to completely cancel visas with some countries in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
